Cyclamen, the middlemost of nine children, already understands what will become of her in the future, and it has made her numb. Her family is nobility, and on good terms with Lord Midden-Hel and Mudling Court. She sees her female relatives tittering quietly to one another whenever she is near โ€” and, yes, she has even finally managed to have her Papa look at her with something like pride instead of just another one of his loud brood. Of all her siblings, Cyclamen is the quietest โ€” the most reserved, but she has a good deal on her mind most of the time which she tries to keep track of in her journal. But her restraint appears to have backfired on her because it is precisely that "demure" reserve that has drawn the eye of the Midden-Hel King. The Bog-Devil King. He wishes to marry Cyclamen. This is something she only discovered through a fair amount of eavesdropping โ€” which she started only once her relatives began acting so strangely around her. No one has said anything certain โ€” nothing yet is set in stone. But this Academy endeavour, Cyclamen imagines, could be some sort of precursor to marriage โ€” possibly even stipulated by the King. She worries that by attending the Academy, she is walking straight into the trap. Then again, Cyclamen has now become practised at shutting down to preserve herself. It could be a useful period of time, she thinks. A time where she might fill her head with other thoughts โ€” or else succumb to her future . . . and never feel anything ever again.

The Mires are a sturdy lot, which only makes Cyclamenโ€™s โ€” nay, Violetโ€™s โ€” fragility all the more an issue. They are an old nobility family steeped in tradition. Their own history claims to extend back to the very founding of the Mudling Court; that is how pure and regal their bloodline is. And each Mire must earn their rightful place as a member of the family, lest they be expunged from the { bog- } tree altogether. That is just one of the many conventions they observe, but by far the most pressing.

You see, upon birth, each child is given two names: one they shall be called, and one they must earn. Those who end up not earning their true name by the age of 30 are deemed unworthy of their familyโ€™s honor and patronage. They are cast out, forever stuck with their youthful moniker, and the rest must move on as if they never existed at all.

That is a small part of why Violetโ€™s brood extends to nine. The Mires often sire many heirs, on the off-chance only a few of them are deemed true members of the family. However, all four of her elder siblings have managed to carve out their place in the world and ascend into greatness. Now all eyes are Violet for the first time in her life. She has spent all her years hiding from them, at peace in the shadows. A part of her . . . the darkest part of her . . . even fancied the idea of failing to grasp her name, to run into the bog and never return. To become one with the moss and leaves. She gets the lingering sense that it would be like returning home.

It would be her easiest option, wouldnโ€™t it? To give up and disappear. Cyclamen need never exist. Violet, too, could fade into the essence of the marsh โ€” a meaningless, human name lost on the soft breeze.

She knows in her heart it would be the most serene choice. So why does she find herself fighting that pull more and more each day?

The bog is a sensual whisper in her ear. But glory is an open invitation of adventure that she never knew her soul needed.

โ†ฃ Violet, born Cyclamen, came into the world a rather sickly thing. While this would perhaps cause some parents to dote ever more on their child, in hopes of keeping them alive, it branded her as a pariah from her first days. If she was not strong enough to survive within their palace walls, what would she be like in the harsh environment of Brandelbellan's wildes? They marked her as good as dead. Within two months of her birth, her mother was pregnant again. As if they needed a new child to replace the disappointment that was Violet.

โ†ฃ This younger brother, dubbed Digitalis and called Foxglove, became her shield from the world. Violet would almost never be seen without trailing behind him. Three more came in the next few years, rounding out the Mires crew at nine. Violet is sandwiched between them all, lost in a sea of raucous laughter and intensity. She is one of three girls battling for a place among six hardy boys. But for Violet, it is no battle. She has never harped for attention nor demanded power.

โ†ฃ Could part of it be the lingering terror of what she once endured โ€” the truth she often hides from herself? Violet has a startling ability to compartmentalize and almost become numb to her surroundings. Part of that has led her to cut away at her own memory. When she was eleven, her father reluctantly brought her and her other sisters on a diplomatic meeting to another Brandelbellan noble family. They were . . . potential offerings, for brides, if the negotiations came to that. Only Violet never arrived at the palace. Her father still isn't sure what happened. They made camp for the night in the bog. Though a terrifying place, he takes pride in his ability to survive there. His best warriors were along. No one missed their nightly post. And yet they awoke to Violet having disappeared. Three weeks later, she appeared in a daze back on her home's doorstep. No one has spoken of the incident since, but the aunties and ladies of the palace still whisper about it sometimes. What happened to her, amongst the creatures of the marsh?

โ†ฃ Is there something wrong with enjoying the simpler things in life? The Mires villanize such things, accepting only the best in the most valiant of pursuits. But Violet likes the quiet. She enjoys the peace of gathering her thoughts on paper. She appreciates the small tasks necessary to run a home. In fact, it is almost as if learning to hold her tongue and tame that wild ferocity โ€” the kind that keeps one alive when facing the woes of the bog โ€” is its own act of rebellion. The Mires palace is always alive with passionate arguments, brandished swords, and drunken feasts. Violet's demure nature is the antithesis of her environment. For years, it is what allowed her to blend in. But now, it is the very thing causing her to stand out. The Bog King. Her newfound habit of following the gossip has led to a terrible and startling revelation. Becoming Queen, certainly, would earn her Name in a heartbeat. But at what cost?

โ†ฃ She is still confused and unsure about this new academy business. Especially because whoever enrolled her as a Lily seems to have used her True Name, Cyclamen. Brandelballen's name customs are lost on the other kingdoms, and some, especially her teachers, have taken to calling her this forbidden word โ€” a destiny she has not yet earned. Violet thought she would detest it; it doesn't belong to her, after all. It does not encompass the person she is. But hearing it has stirred something strange within her. Some days she is still Violet โ€” soft and sweet. Others, however, it is as though the ghost of this Cyclamen creature possesses her, and a new intensity fills her. Changes her. Molds her into an entirely new being. Or perhaps an old version of her . . . one that she used to know, before the Bog robbed it of her.

โ†ฃ Her only request was that Foxglove joins her. Though the acceptance was a bit begrudging on his part, he now calls the hallowed halls his own. Of course, he still calls her Violet. And he's taken to correcting anyone that does otherwise. It's not right; it isn't who she is. But the once-inseparable siblings are finding that the academy for peace is doing the exact opposite for their relationship. There is a touch of . . . venom in their interactions these days. It seems Foxglove isn't as fond of Violet when she isn't nodding in agreement to everything he says.

Like all Mires boys, Foxglove is a stalky, athletic man of honor and dignity . . . or, at least, he thinks he is. He doesn't seem to notice how even his younger brothers can best him in a fight rather easily. In fact, Lagurus secretly fears that it is not Violet but Foxglove who shall be his first child to fail to earn their name. His pursuits are more academically focused, which is only part of why Violet begged for her brother to join her at school. He is incredibly intelligent and witty; his stories keep many enthralled. A certain kind of charisma follows him wherever he goes. Violet knew that, in many ways, he would flourish in its hallways much more than he ever could battling it out in the bog. But Foxglove thinks rather highly of himself. Despite his love for books, his supposed talents are too grandiose for "something as mediocre as peace." He is simply too wrapped up in his ego to notice his own flaws. In many ways, the Mires boys are raised that way by design. The cruel world of the bog favors the bold and fearless. But in the case of Foxglove, it may mean plunging headfirst into a situation that gets him injured . . . or worse. He has fancied himself Violet's protector their whole lives. Sure, he is a bit younger than her, but they're so close in age that they have no memories without the other. They've been a rather inseparable duo since his birth. And it is true that Foxglove has shielded Violet from many woes of the Mudling Court. He just never expected this gnawing feeling of . . . helplessness, as Violet grows out of relying on him for everything. Foxglove has always been able to pretend that it is she who is in need of his help. But being left to his own devices might not be full of bliss like he expected.

โ†ฃ As thick as thieves, Foxglove and Violet are so close that it seems they speak a language all their own. They have a history of not making friends with others, simply because they're both a bit out of place at their court. Of course, Foxglove thinks this to be only the fault of Violet; he could totally be friends with anyone if he wanted!

โ†ฃ Though Violet will have a more complicated relationship with some people calling her Cyclamen on accident Foxglove will AGGRESSIVELY shut down anyone who even begins to call him Digitalis. And if you try calling Violet by Cyclamen in his presence, he'll announce his displeasure as well. This custom means the world to him, and he will not have it disrespected.

Essa and her twin sister, Enna, grew up quite poor in Brandelbellan's Leaker Landing. While Enna was always a happy, adventurous child โ€” well-loved and popular, Essa was more of a conniving creature with a penchant for delving out harsh-truths and needless venom. { Her mother liked to say she has "a mouth like a Nix". } The twins were identical yet dissimilar in spirit as night and day. And it was no secret that Enna was the favourite. When Essa was thirteen, her sister drowned in the fathomless mires of Leaker Landing- and Essa was blamed for having let Enna go into the deep bog alone. Enna's body was never recovered, thoroughly taken by the bog, and Essa was essentially run out of Leaker Landing by its inhabitants { for some were convinced she murdered Enna out of jealousy and they wanted the girl to hang for it }. A few misfortunes along the way led her to be brought before the king for punishment. Her pardon has been a matter of . . . usefulness, rather than true redemption. For the past three years, living in the House of Mwdrys, Essa has been considering a number of things. Furthest from her mind, however, is the notion of marring Mwdrys โ€” as the widower has asked { begged } for her hand now at least a dozen times. { He's a foul man, whatever he portrays himself to be at Court. } No, her considerations have much more to do with poisoned cups followed by nights upon nights of lascivious partying with her friends (the few she has as she is quite despised at Court). Possibly it's more of a daydream than an actual consideration. Possibly . .

โ†ฃ Enemies! Loathing! Hatred! A history of rolled eyes and venom! We shall work out the rest of the details in our messages, I think, before I try to encapsulate it haha.

Lucan and her Wolfen father live apart from the traditional Clan due to a falling-out with her father's Clan before Lucan was even born. Her father now operates a tavern on the outskirts of Awyrfang which caters mostly to outsiders travelling through the Realm. Wolfen, in general, don't like outsiders, but it's a hazard of the job for her father. Lucan, on the other hand, finds them fascinating. If she wasn't such a shy creature, she'd likely try to make friends of passers-through, but as it is, she mostly just quietly serves drinks and tidies the upstairs rooms . . . and eavesdrops. Ear-against-doors and -walls eavesdropping. Which is the only way she was able to learn about the Academy โ€” by listening to a conversation between a soon-to-be professor { named Priscillien } and another tavern patron. Lucan happened to be listening so intently that she fell over the man's lap after tripping herself on the floor boards โ€” luckily, the young Professor had a good sense of humour about the whole thing. They ended up becoming friendly and conversing through the late hours of the night. By the time Priscillien went on his way the following morning, Lucan was sure she had to enroll in the Academy. If for no other reason than to see Priscillien again.

โ†ฃ Lucan and Violet are so similar that they might almost be too similar. Their shy natures might doom them into never growing close; which one of them would possibly initiate something?

โ†ฃ I do think Foxglove could perhaps embarrass himself by trying to flirt with her and getting massively rejected. Preferably publicly lol. Then, out of respect to her brother's bruised ego, Violet might have to pretend to dislike Lucan. She might have a secret respect for her, though, and be amused by the situation. That respect, however, will dissipate if the relationship with the teacher comes to light. Unfortunately, I think Violet would be raised a bit conservatively and would only see it through the lens of Lucan sleeping with an authority figure to get ahead or something.

โ†ฃ Of course, the relationship might never come to light. I don't know what you have planned.

โ†ฃ At the very least, I think there are some, "soft smiles exchanged across the tables at the library" in their future once they get used to seeing the other one studying there too.

Tegeirian { "Orchid" in Welsh } was abandoned to the elements of the marshland as a small child. He would have died in quaking bog were it not for the man he would come to call "Grandfather" โ€” Eivor Din-Wel. Eivor pulled Tegeirian from the engulfing peat, took him into his small moss-covered home tucked in the bog of Blackwater-Sin, and raised him as his own. As a foundling, Tegeirian has no memory of his parents or where he came from. He can only assume he was abandoned in the deep bog for dead. Tegeirian spent his teenage years earning small coin as a ferryman on the Blackwater-Sin marsh โ€” and while he was ferrying, he met his fair share of pals and love interests. Ultimately, he fell in with a small gang of Mudlings โ€” orphans like him โ€” and began using his ferrying as a means of stealthily stealing from his passengers. One evening, Teg was caught in the act and when a row broke out, he attempted to hold his target's head underwater until another man dragged him off. Out of control by Eivor's standards and far too much to handle for one elderly man, Eivor put Tegeirian out of his home โ€” and only after pleading with him for hours over his incessant drinking and gang activity. Authorities of Blackwater-Sin rather thought it would benefit the boy to attend The Lillium Academy for some structure and a much-needed lesson in peaceability. At least there, they believe he will be dry and cut-off from his fellow criminals. However, The Lillium Academy is not a detention centre for young offenders โ€” it's certainly not a rehab โ€” and Teg can easily make trouble wherever the hell he is.

    โ†ฃ I think Violet would definitely look down on Teg at first, since he is quite low-class and the type of bog person she would've never really encountered in her own life. Though maybe a mix of missing home and that new sense of daring that she will be emboldened with will convince her to reach out to him. Which, of course, he will entertain only because he knows this naive idiot is filthy rich. Would he be willing to play the long-con of stealing from her? Or perhaps even faking to be her friend because he hears of the rumors that she may be marrying the Bog King? And he thinks he can somehow either steal from him? { Does he have any desires to do some grand scheme that makes him infamous? } Or he just thinks he can get this stupid girl in his pocket to a point where he could even be some kind of advisor to him . . . and thus the king? Essentially securing himself a spot of wealth and decadence? { Because, of course, we'd have to foil this plan and create many afoul adventures. }

Bonny has been proposed to a number of times by different people, but despite her grandmother's constant pressure to settle down, she has refused each and every one of them. No, it's much more fun being unmarried and unfettered by babies, Bonny's certain of it. She's far, far more interested in singing and doing little twirly dances in the market for a bit of coin to be used on a pretty shawl or a fine sliver of crystalberry cake. Or else taking off to the thermal pools with friends on a moment's notice. There is no inclination, no hint of wanting to "settle down". But with the establishment of The Lillium Academy, Bonny's grandmother got a bee in her bonnet over sending her only grandchild to recieve higher education โ€” one that "will do this world some good". When Bonny โ€” very unwilling to leave her social life { and scores of admirers } behind for some stodgy school in Rhosymora โ€” refused, her grandmother then threatened her with betrothal to a local boy { not even one of her lovely suitors! } with more teeth than brains in his head if she did not comply. Well, that was all the motivation Bonny needed. At least it's just a few months โ€” by then Bonny will be certain to have a plan of attack.

โ†ฃ Hmmm, pretty sure that Violet would be incredibly intimidated by Bonny. Just like straight gobsmacked lmfao.

โ†ฃ Here she is, a naive little lady, basically, despite her upbringing as something that was supposed to cultivate her into a fighter. Whereas Bonny was raised to be a demure lady, but she has her own rebellious streak against the confines of her society. Of course, each of them has a heavy dose of naivety that makes them, let's face it, a bit stupid. Though in different ways too. Because Bonny is a very easy person to get along with, and she's charismatic. I don't think Violet has a single charming bone in her body lol.

    โ†ฃ I don't think Bonny being sassy would really bother Violet in the same way it would others. All of her siblings are that way. She was raised to speak her mind in the same way; she just prefers to do it in her journal instead. I feel like it would take a long time for Bonny to notice Violet, who is more of a blend-into-the-background type. If she does, however, she might consider Violet to be someone she could easily manipulate into being a little minion of hers? Since she doesn't talk back but also doesn't seem to break so easily if sass is thrown her way? { Not super sure if she is the type to do that. I just wondered if she would want little followers to replace the friends from home who didn't come with her. }

โ†ฃ If that happens, I think it's possible for them to have a bit of a falling out, perhaps, when Violet becomes a bit more outspoken and independent. I feel like it's too early in the planning period to say if this cultivates a more real respect for one another that makes them closer โ€” or drives a wedge in their relationship that can't be repaired. We can surprise ourselves lmfao.

โ†ฃ But yeah. Not sure how much they'd really interact in the beginning? Since Violet would be too shy to go up to Bonny, and Bonny is probably going to be too cool to take notice of her?

Lovechild, formerly of the Royal Gaurd and recently hand-picked by the Queen to become one of her scholars, is genuine in his nonsense. From boyhood, his family has tried to regiment him in some useful way, but he's too . . . himself. Even as a Gaurd, he was too busy making friends with the new Queen, the scullery staff, the boy who replaces the old flowers in the Royal Apartments with fresh flowers, the old women who draw the King's bath to worry overmuch about his duties. But that's his problem โ€” he can't really focus on anything for too long. Standing around, waiting? Not his forte. He was let go from his position after a few weeks โ€” "discharged", but Diamandis made sure that he had somewhere to go and make himself useful. The Academy. While Lovechild wasn't able to focus on "The Book of Fair Thought" for very long, he got the gist and found it to be the antithesis of his father's every endeavour. His father encouraged all of his sons into the military. { The man gave his young sons daggers as birthday gifts, for pity's sake. } Lovechild, a trained Guard โ€” a young man practised in combat from a young age thanks to his soldier father โ€” had never considered the other side of things. A world where soldiers may not be necessary because wars no longer happen. It intrigues Lovechild, at the very least. And since Diamandis went to so much trouble for him, the least he could do is attend her Academy and maybe learn a thing or two. What could it hurt?

โ†ฃ I think that Foxglove and Lovechild will either absolutely love each other or absolutely hate one another. And for that reason, Violet will resent him lol.

โ†ฃ For some reason I keep picturing that Lovechild gives her her first kiss out of pity. And she thinks it's nasty. Another damper on their weird hate-friendship.

โ†ฃ LOOK! I know you said that thing about the wedding as a joke. However, I also think we should consider the option of a very elaborate hijinx to be afoot one day. At the very least, we could explore the idea of Violet pretending to know much more about the bog than she does and she could try to impress him with it or something lol. Like I don't really know how to write down what I'm thinking. I just feel that, despite neither really liking each other that much, they end up accidentally spending a lot of time together? Maybe by having many classes together? Or just his friendship with Foxglove meaning they're reluctantly near one another often? And this kind of proximity that begins with a casual dislike blurs into annoyance as they get to know one another more, but it eventually breaks into this kind of strange loyalty? Where they're still sassy and act like they don't care for one another? But they're lowkey best buds? Just ones that would never admit it? That doesn't make any sense. I'm sorry lol.

I think I want someone else that the Bog King has his eye on for marriage. Then Violet and this girl will end up in a silly little game of trying to help the other one become his bride because neither of them want it.

โ†ฃ I had this really dumb idea with the Maiden-Head Games that I think I'm going to scrap completely because I feel like a fool lmfao. I do find that idea so intriguing but maybe just not something that makes sense for Violet to have a stake in. I don't know!!!!

โ†ฃ This shy little fool has very little life experience and almost no previous opportunity of hanging around people her own age that aren't her siblings. And out of those, only Foxglove really cared to know her. That's part of why she is so attached to her diary. It has been her closest and longest friend. I think many parts of her upbringing make her a rather awkward person that doesn't know how to make friends. I wouldn't be surprised if, despite her kind demeanor, she rubs people the wrong way. Many will find her naivety a bit off-putting. And she's definitely been spoiled with her posh upbringing. Resentment over that could be very real as well.

โ†ฃ I'm so obsessed with Fell as a character that I really want to claim him. Yet that relationship between "gruff, brooding wolf boy" and "soft, quiet bog girl" sounds like a horrible book you get at the grocery store checkout. So . . . I'm still working on it. It's really difficult when you're absolutely swooning over a character like I am for Fell, but then you're not entirely sure how to entwine their storylines lol. UGH.

โ†ฃ Like I said on my set, I am looking for perhaps a touch of that Hades x Persephone shenanigans. What I mean by this is like . . . Violet is basically this little airhead who is drifting on the surface of life. I'm interested in watching her get torn down, broken apart, tricked, manipulated, twisted, and all kinds of destroyed. Only for her to come out on the other side much more interesting than she was before lol. { But, tbh, still a rather quiet person because I don't think that's a character flaw! I want her to be a strong soft . . . if that makes sense. Like she is just too gullible now. So she needs to go through it. But I want her to see hell and still choose to be soft in the face of it. You feel? } Which, tbh, is part of what makes Fell a little bit intriguing. But I might be interested in exploring this possibility with others as well, maybe??? OBVIOUSLY . . . the bog kind = Hades is sitting right there for me. I'm not a fool. However, I think there are some ways we could make it more complicated if you wanted hehe.

โ†ฃ I do think that the Bog King stipulated her coming here, which is also why that other NPC girl is here as well. When / if Violet finds this out, she might start throwing a bit of her usual caution out the window and start slacking off, talking back in class, etc.

โ†ฃ She is soon going to have some invasive memories from her time lost in the bog hitting her. It's gonna be messy. I can't wait. If you think your character ever wants to deep-dive into the library with Violet, that's possible. She will pretend like she's studying their lessons and homework, but she'll actually be trying to figure out what happened to her.

โ†ฃ I'd mostly like to create really toxic, messy relationships since I don't think Cyclamen has a single good example in her life, nor does she understand others enough. She is a good person who is patient and kind and compassionate like I said. But good people can also be toxic! I especially think that Violet can have toxic positivity specifically. Basically a yes man who will suppress her own emotions in favor of seeming happy and supportive constantly, no matter the cost. She will also be too meek to voice her opinions at first, essentially letting people walk all over her.

โ†ฃ If anyone needs a plot where someone that they thought was a good person ends up betraying them, I do think that Violet should do something terrible at some point.
