⊱ Ever since Ysabela Leander won her spot as the Student Body President, people have taken to calling her the Ice Queen. Amongst the Student Council, she's known even further as the Virgin Queen, primarily due to the similarities between her and Queen Lizzie I. However, Ysa wears her icicle crown with pride. She's fully aware of both nicknames, and while she prefers one over the other, she's quite aware that she's better off not acknowledging the virgin comments. That's what Ysabela has mastered well: the art of appearing so far removed from her subjects that nothing bothers her. When it does... there's hell to pay. The uncertainty concerning when Ysa's next outburst will occur keeps everyone in line.

⊱ Perpetually composed, Ysa rules her sector of Mystic Falls High School with an iron fist, of sorts. Every word out of her mouth is intentional. She tends to speak like a grandmother, slow and purposeful. Ysa doesn't stutter. She doesn't even rephrase things. The most basic she gets within a conversation is when she uses sarcasm to take someone down a peg. Anyone who threatens her status perpetually is on the receiving end of her biting comments. If she's not making deceptively rude remarks, she's likely planning someone's downfall.

⊱ One thing that keeps Ysa's populace in check is the painful awareness they have of her abilities to destroy someone with a flick of her wrist. Really, it takes more work than just that, but she'll never reveal those secrets. For someone who commands the respect and attention of the room, she has innumerable secrets. When someone's deep secrets are revealed or a Carrie-like situation occurs at Prom, everyone knows it's her, but no one bothers to figure out how she does it. Ever since freshman year, Ysa's scheming and ability to make things disappear akin to a Mafia boss have remained mysteries. It's one of those aspects to her that people neglect to discuss for fear of what she'll do in response. That and a girl's hair disappeared the day after she questioned Ysabela's methods in sophomore year.

⊱ Because of this, it's no surprise that Ysabela lacks many true friends. She has students who follow her because they have to, but they rarely want to see her outside of school. Yet, Ysa lacks many of the high school staples that people grow used to. She's attended every school event, but that's mostly to ensure people remember their place, even at social parties. She's a queen, of sorts, and her primary focus is protecting her kingdom.

⊱ In the depths of Ysabela Leander's soul, there exists a shiny pit of goodness and sunshine. It was shoved far into the depths long ago, but with each passing year of damn-near solitude, it threatens to come up to the surface. Those who have had the pleasure of seeing it aren't around much these days, especially her dad. The people who feel her warm personality bubbling underneath usually leave once they realize how rare it appears. Her coldness is only worsened once people realize there's something kinder underneath. What happened to people like her being a work-in-progress or a loner with a heart of gold?

⊱ When Ysa lets her guard down, she's known to be sunny and comedic. Her intellect shines through her witty banter instead of her domineering speech. While she's still as demanding as ever, she's more so like a kid on a road trip asking "Are we there yet?" Ysabela can be quite the character when she lets her vulnerability and insecurity drift away. She rarely is okay with being exposed, but when she is, she lights up the room.

⊱ It's a shame more people don't see Ysa's lighter side. The nervousness that comes with letting the soft girl out causes her to stumble over her words and drop things on accident. Unfortunately, those same clumsiness-inducing insecurities make for a pretty addictive personality and an anxious-avoidant-attachment style. If Ysa has decided to let you in on who she is, she'll probably do anything in her power to keep you around. Until she thinks you're going to leave her... then she destroys you before you destroy her.

══════ 𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐆𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 ══════

𝕭𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖌𝖗𝖔𝖚𝖓𝖉

⊱ The Leander family were close-knit. The type of picture-perfect family with a golden retriever and an old Victorian. To be fair- they did actually have a golden retriever (her name was Daisy), and they live in a restored Victorian that had been in the Leander for decades before a brief property exchange and eventual abandonment. Marco had been the one to restore the house to its former glory. He let Ysabela decorate her room as she saw fit, making it their first Dad-&-Daughter project.

⊱ Much to the town's surprise, given how they were the past few years, Marco and Ysabela were two peas in a pod. She was his pride and joy. While Jada was off drumming up votes and money for various political positions, like Council member, they were busy spending time in the garage together. Marco used to manufacture custom furniture and refurbish antiques. Ysa spent time with him almost every day, kicking her legs back and forth as she sat in the lawn chair on the edge of the garage door. He'd play her favorite music (which happened to be his- but who's surprised there). At one point, Jada grew resentful of the time her daughter and husband spent together. Sure, it was only natural for them to grow close given how distant Jada was. Yet, she disliked how much of Marco's time Ysabela took. Or perhaps it was the other way around. Either way, she felt disconnected from her family.

⊱ When Marco left, Ysabela's favor twisted. Ysa was only 10 at the time, and yet he was gone of his own volition. Jada continued to tend to her duties as Mayor, even as rumors began to circulate about her husband's disappearance. Marco came home, sure enough, and people just thought his 9-month absence had to do with what the family would learn in only 3 years' time. Prior to knowledge leaking of Marco's illness, the town perpetuated dozens of rumors. A popular one was that the coincidence that he was gone for only 9 months had to do with an affair. Fortunately for Jada, the excuse that he simply went on a trip to China to look into bamboo furniture was more than enough to quell the rumors. Everyone and anyone believes the words that came out of Jada Leander's mouth. Except for her daughter.

⊱ People still wonder why Ysa hates her father so much. In middle school, she would spin yarn after yarn about how much she despised Marco. She said he was off fucking Jada's secretary. He went away to romance a fellow carpenter but it turned out he was being catfished. He left his only daughter and beautiful wife because he's a murderer for hire. She would say anything, make up anything, to fight the painfully logical excuses her parents made. Except they weren't logical, at least not to Ysa, who was the one to wake up with no father when the night before she had one. After a year, she began to accept that she wouldn't know the answer to why Marco left. It didn't stop her from despising her father. She stopped speaking to him, going weeks at a time without even so much of a word uttered to him. For a moment, Jada thought her daughter had become mute. Yet, with Marco on Ysa's no-fly list, Jada managed to become her daughter's favorite.

⊱ The pair began to have girls' days. They became notable figures around town, helping everyone forget the mild scandal of Marco's vacation. Instead, they started to recognize the Leander women. Jada, with her charisma, and Ysabela, with her charming shyness. It was only a matter of time before Marco was quickly forgetted, until his illness. It was almost as if overnight Ysa came to realize the true power of the Leander family. It's no surprise, given how she turned out in high school.

⊱ Barring the snafu with Marco and Ysabela's ensuing cursing of her father, the Leanders were on the rise. Publicly, they were the family- the kind with the old Victorian and the golden retriever. However, internally, the cracks were starting to show. Then, Marco went missing again. Except, this time, when he came back, he and Jada sat their daughter down and revealed to her the nature of his illness. He had colon cancer, stage 4. Ysa's face turned bright tomato red as she realized that it was her fault. Her father was sick because of her. All those years of hating him, cursing him, and all of a sudden he was dying. Upon hearing the news, she nodded to her parents quietly, and then left for her room without a word. She cried into her pillow for an hour before she sat up, face dryer than the Sahara, and decided to spend what little time she had left with her father.

⊱ Except, he was never home. Ysa never got the opportunity to spend much time with him. She still hasn't. The. most they've done together is pick out new decor for her bedroom, a tradition they hadn't done in years. The guilt ate away at her, and to make matters worse, her mother no longer had time for her. While she continued to attend to her duties as Mayor and socialize at every ball and gathering, Jada barely spoke to her daughter more than once a day. Ysa knew her mother blamed her for what happened. All that ill-will turned into reality, and now not even her mom wanted to see her. It was no surprise that this made her vulnerable.

TW: Mentions of Assault

⊱ It came as no surprise when in the latter half of 8th grade, Ysabela fell into the wrong crowd. The regret and guilt-wracked her body, making her turn to alcohol. It came in quick supply when she found her way into the gaggle of boys who did nothing but play Call of Duty and get drunk together. Ysa thought that these boys were her friends and their girlfriends were just an expanded facet to their friend group. However, she was quick to discover that not all of these boys had the sole intention of being her friend. One night, she found herself far more inebriated than she wanted to be. One of the boys offered to let her hit his Breeze, and she did only to accidentally flop against him. They were alone. She was drunk. He was sober. The rest of the story can write itself, and Ysa would rather not relive the details.

⊱ After that day, she stopped hanging out with those boys. Some of them asked her why, oblivious to the people they kept company with. Ysabela offered no answer, and it certainly didn't help that she knew if she told them anything, they'd likely take his side. Ysa was no stranger to the perils of misogyny and rape culture. Instead, she let the rest of middle school pass by without consequence. She had resigned herself to being the awkward, gawky girl in high school, given she didn't exactly desire to be in the spotlight.

End of Warning; TLDR: Ysa's 'friend' took advantage of her and she cut all ties with her group of friends because of it. She has yet to tell anyone about what happened.

⊱ High school was far different. Over the summer, Ysabela grew into her stony demeanor. Gone was the shy, sweet girl who wore glasses and talked about Jojo's Bizarre Adventure all the time. She had a full makeover, akin to the type in She's All That. Heading into freshman year, she became a respected figure quickly. As merely a little freshie, she joined the Student Council as their Treasurer. During that first year, she made dozens of suggestions that helped improve school dances, fundraising, clubs, and even the toilet paper in the bathroom. Ysa wasn't exactly feared, but her improvements to the school made her well-respected. It wasn't until Founder's Day that people realized her power.

⊱ The first appearance of her Twitter account happened on that fateful Saturday night. Weeks before, one of Nora Byrne's underlings had revealed to her that Nora's boyfriend was cheating on her. With said underling (whose name was legally changed following the backlash). Needless to say, it was a scandal of massive proportions, and by revealing it to the masses on the Student Council Twitter (which has since been rebranded to be MFHS's gossip page), Ysa became the powerful force people recognize her as today.

⊱ Sophomore year was when Ysabela truly rose to power. Nora decided that the girl who publicly ridiculed her boyfriend and weeded out those disloyal to her should be the one to inherit her kingdom. It wasn't exactly a surprise to Ysa, but all of a sudden high school became less about garnering respect and more about being the Queen. She wanted to rule the kingdom that obviously Nora Byrne thought she deserved. Whatever Ysabela had done to simply avoid being a victim again had allowed her to reap the benefits of the ruling class of MFHS. Now, no one would dare question her. She was Queen.

⊱ People knew not to cross her. Except for one girl. Polaris Emani. The cheerleader embodied everything that Ysabela hated about high school. She resented the fact that Polaris felt like she deserved the role. She had everything else at her fingertips, and if she had just respected Ysa's power, they could've been allies. Instead, they divided the school, and she began to rule her side of the school with ease and with an iron fist. Ysa had decided long ago that she wasn't going to let anyone or anything ruin her. She wasn't a weakling. She was the girl who'd cursed her father to death {practically}. She was the girl whose mother is the Mayor. She was the Queen of Mystic Falls High, and she would be damned if anyone dared threaten that. The Leanders were always a powerful family, and Ysa is the epitome of power.

𝕱𝖆𝖒𝖎𝖑𝖞 𝕳𝖎𝖘𝖙𝖔𝖗𝖞

In Mystic Falls, the six founding families are regarded with a certain prestige ━ Leander, Hansbridge, Byrne, Danton, Finchum, and Xenakis. It means something to have one of these names. The Leanders like to consider themselves the royals of this already-elite bunch, as they have been a part of every successful industry and initiative that has made its way through town. Although they currently wear the proverbial crown, Jada's appointment as mayor is actually the first time a Leander has ever held the office. { Yes, she insisted that Marco agree to take her name in the prenup. } It does not look like it will be going elsewhere anytime soon. Jada has the town worshipping at her feet. She has the beautiful family; the calming, charismatic voice; and the decisiveness of a born leader. With her at the helm, most people don't even realize the worsening mysteries around them. Jada will be damned before the image of a picture-perfect town gets smeared in any way whilst her reputation is at stake. 𝓑𝓮 𝓬𝓪𝓻𝓮𝓯𝓾𝓵 𝔀𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝔀𝓲𝓼𝓱 𝓯𝓸𝓻. If only she could boast the same power over The Council. The Leander name has dwindled but to a small number, with fewer still being allowed in on the secrets haunting Mystic Falls. Jada simply does not have the back-up she needs to support her during her . . . predicament. Four years ago, the town's heart broke for Jada and Ysabela when Marco fell ill. He has been struggling ever since. Most days, he is too sick to stay with them. Marco has only made a handful of appearances these past few years, and each time, he seems weaker. Few are aware of the truth: it’s all an elaborate ruse. The only disease afflicting him is vampirism. With help from the work of both Juarez doctors, Marco is kept under control. He is being experimented on in this very town. Though The Council recognizes that Jada is trying to help their cause, most can't help but think the only good vampire is a desiccated one. Worse still, Ysabela genuinely thinks her father is dying. If only she knew that he's already dead.

꞊ Alrighty so... Raegen told me about The Anchor and now I'm leaning towards Ysabela not being a vampire? I know that it would be really interesting to have her as a vamp, but instead I'm leaning towards having her die and come back only to be trapped between the two worlds. So at some point prepare for Ysa being a ghost 0-0. This prolly won't be for a hot minute, however, so just ignore this for now UNLESS you'd like for your character to eventually be apart of that lol.

꞊Reginald Byrne is probably going to be the one behind Marco's attack. However, I see the Juarezes being behind him becoming a vampire. I haven't worked out all the details yet, but I'd like to involve both families in some capacity for maximum ~drama~ (also because both families have people playing as a member, so it'd be nice to involve every playable in some way tehehe)

꞊I'd like to involve the Original Family in some way, especially because Solara is being played by grace-note. They're always trying to get in on what the Council is doing, and while Ysa wouldn't know anything, it might be interesting to have the family try to use her in some capacity. I don't know. There's a lot in my little noggin right now, but I'm thinking that we could bring in a vampire from out of town this way? Perhaps Ysa has a half-sibling and he's this 13-year-old kid. I imagine her feeling weirdly motherly towards him, but also 0-0 bruh how'd this happen. I know that in TVD kids aren't shown to be turned, probably because that's a line people just don't cross (not even vampires lol). However, I think it might be interesting to play with that, especially if the kid didn't know he was a vamp and it didn't come out until someone revealed it (perhaps like a hunter or something)

I think what is more fun is if people suspect this is what happened. When in reality, there's something more complicated going on. The Juarez family could be behind it. Maybe they wanted Jada to feel in debt / allied with them. Or it could have something to do with the Originals. Like maybe one of them compelled him, thinking that the husband of the mayor would be able to give them endless information on the town's secret Council news. Then when he was almost killed, they decided an undead spy is better than a dead spy. Or just a regular vampire did this. Maybe Kelan lol. You get where I'm going with this. There is a sneaky plot here, somewhere.

As the Ice Queen, Ysabela is perpetually cold to strangers. Her warm-core shines through with the handful of people she holds close to her. However, if you're ever at a point where you expect her ice-pick gaze. Steer clear of her, and hopefully, you'll avoid her wrath. If you're seen with Polaris' crowd too much, though, you'll come to regret it. Still, even Ysa has to acknowledge that those closest to Lara are hard to take down, particularly because she's known them since she was a kid. Therefore, if your character runs with Lara, expect Ysa to mention something about her mixed feelings about them. Unless they're someone like Ryan Chambers, then she has a weird (though understandable) vendetta).

While I won't create a backstory until I know if someone wants to play her, I do see them getting along + I see Maia being part of Ysa's small clique.
𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 〉〉 They work together on Ysabela's gossip Twitter. Given Maia's sleuthing abilities and Ysa's popularity, they are invaluable allies to one another. They frequently have sleepovers together, which ultimately turn into some sort of battle room-type meeting since they're always plotting the next Twitter blast. However, their friendship is interesting, even if it seems to be the most obvious conclusion. The Byrnes and the Leanders don't get along, resulting in Maia and Ysabela's connection to be quite the talk of both families.

In fact, Ysa finds Xavier annoying, even uncharming. As of late, his connections with Polaris make her blood boil, and while she can't bring herself to treat him any differently, there is a certain coldness to her tone when she speaks to him.

Deep down, Ysabela knows she blames it on her constant cursing Marco and wishing he was dead. Who would love someone as monstrous as her?

They were the town's darlings, and no adult could resist outgoing Jada and her shy daughter. However, as Marco's health has worsened, distance has grown between the women. When Jada does bother to talk to Ysabela, it's about what she's doing to keep up appearances at Mystic Falls High. It's never about what's going on with Dad, or why Ysa hasn't been home all week. In fact, Jada is too busy being mayor to notice the bottle of Adderall on her daughter's desk or the wax pen in her purse.
