She won't deny that she loves Lara Croft enough to put up with it, at least for now. The occasional Lar can even be tolerated from those who know her well. Vega Emani was not her name back then.

โ €โ €โ € โ €When she endured forty-two hours of labor to bring Polaris into the world, her husband was by her side every moment. When the bleeding almost killed her . . . when the baby seemed too impossibly stubborn to ever let go, Devesh Rao did everything in his power to protect the wife and daughter he adored more than anything in the world. Back then, he had infinite supplies of both love and strength, being a member of the Warrick coven. But that was only because his devotion to neither his family nor his magic had ever been put to the test. Although parenthood was a rough transition for both young individuals, it seemed like nothing they couldn't handle together. It takes a village, and they had one within their beloved small town where everyone knows each other, everyone helps each other, and . . . everyone secretly wants to watch others fail. Polaris Rao was a rowdy toddler of three years old before they figured it out. And suddenly that village wasn't so willing to help anymore. She was not a witch like her parents. She was much worse.

    ๐“ ๐“ผ๐“ฒ๐“น๐“ฑ๐“ธ๐“ท๐“ฎ๐“ป.

A filthy abomination. A thief on the prowl for new victims.
An addict always looking for a hit.
A useless guardian that would spend her days in servitude to a Warrick,

โ €โ €โ € โ €So she did not stay Polaris Rao. Devesh would not tarnish his legacy with such a perversion, despite it โ€” her โ€” being of his own creation. Vega Rao got the annulment papers in the mail before she even realized he wouldn't be coming back home. From that moment on, it was the Emani girls versus the world. And oh, did they have a war ahead of them.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Mystic Falls does not take kindly to people who deviate from the norm. { There is a lot of irony in this, of course. Nonetheless . . . } Being "abandoned" by one's husband and father doesn't exactly sit well with southern sensibilities. Surely, there had to be something wrong with these two that were left behind? Devesh was an upstanding member of the town. He wouldn't leave over something trivial. Rumors circulated, but nothing stuck. Vega has always had a way of getting what she wants, spell-induced or not. It only took a few months for the whispers to fade away, though the occasional questioning stare still lingers.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Unlike her father, the Warricks were delighted about the news of Polaris' condition. That meant one of their own children was destined for greatness. As a member of their coven, Vega had certain obligations to fulfill. It used to be something she delighted in. She felt like she was part of something bigger than herself, especially because she did all of it alongside the love of her life. But Devesh left a hole in her heart that filled itself with bitterness. All she had was her daughter. She kept Polaris away from as much as she could, using the guise of giving her a normal childhood before such a grand future was thrust upon her shoulders. It even worked for some time.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Polaris seldom found herself amongst the unholy walls of Mystic Falls' twisted, blasphemous church. Vega still groomed her for her duties, but there was something off about it all. Her mother was always speaking in half-truths, making vague promises. And a personality as large as Polaris did not take well to the news that she was destined to be the Robin to someone else's Batman.

That was not a fate she was willing to accept.

โ €โ €โ € โ €The backlash began manifesting itself when she was seven. Her mother's shop was full of magical items she could siphon at will. Being at home, surrounded by the constant hum of power, got to her head. There was more than one instance on the playground that sent Polaris home with a note of unexplainable circumstances. Tamara was not too happy about the time she had to take away from grooming her own prodigal children into their gifts, just to fix the mess Polaris was making in public. ๐“๐“ฐ๐“ช๐“ฒ๐“ท.

โ €โ €โ € โ €It was a few years before she understood how to separate her emotions from her siphoning. But with the threat of doing home school alongside Charlotte and Sebastian looming over her head, Polaris managed to find the balance { with only some minor casualties }.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Then control brought a new set of challenges. Because suddenly, it didn't take that much for her to know exactly how to get what she wanted. And gods, did Polaris want it all! She wanted to prove to her rotten father that abandoning her was his greatest mistake. She wanted to prove to her coven that she was not taking a back seat to some fool who didn't have enough magic to make feathers float. And she wanted to prove to this elitist town that one did not need a "founding" name to be a force to be reckoned with.

โ €โ €โ € โ €She vowed to be in the center of it all. Equal parts loved and feared. High school would be only the beginning of her kingdom. The students and faculty alike would view her as nothing less than regal. The town would quake when she rose to the challenges of adulthood. As per her plan, Polaris was the lone freshman to make the varsity cheer team โ€” a cut above the rest. Only a fool would deny how beautiful she was. Her grades were tolerable, and her charm made up for where that lacked. It seemed like the natural order of things for her to take the crown, perhaps even as a sophomore, considering the keys to the kingdom would be handed off after the senior class graduated.

โ €โ €โ € โ €But then that stupid Nora Byrne, the older queen bee of her own era, did not appoint Polaris as her successor when her time at high school came to a close. It was another founding family girl, Ysabela Leander, who was plucked from the obscurity of being an ugly, nerdy middle schooler and suddenly thrust into the limelight. Polaris hadn't bothered running for class president; not when being the captain of the cheerleading squad was surely hers within two years. But Ysabela won by a landslide. Suddenly the ground beneath Polaris' feet was shifting. And worst of all, her new foe was a dull, useless human. There was nothing to siphon, even if she wanted to. And, gods, did a dark fury rise towards this girl in her, unlike anything she has felt before. So much so that it almost scared her. Polaris suddenly had to ask herself: what is she truly capable of?

โ €โ €โ € โ €Polaris had underestimated Ysabela before. She took the past for granted; what she wanted almost always became hers. Well, she would never make that mistake again. With Ysabela came a frosted chill. It was a tactic that had served Polaris before: being so strong the world fears you. But she realized they could not battle one another with the same weapon. If Polaris wanted to destroy this rival, she had to be everything she was not.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Where Ysabela keeps her circle small and intimate, Polaris expands. Where she is cold, Lara is warm. She makes people feel like she is hanging on to every word they say. She makes them seem important. And if she needs to destroy them, she does not get her own hands dirty. Polaris plays a very subtle game of manipulation where she gets all of someone's friends to be close to her. Then, ever so slowly, she convinces them to turn their back on the victim. When they think it's their own doing, something as simple as growing apart, her reputation for being as sweet as honey never wavers. There is no blood on her hands. It is as though she has written down every rule from every proper southern lady โ€” quite literally killing with kindness. No one has to know it's only an act. Her ruthlessness is locked tightly away behind bright smiles, pom-poms, and melodious laughter. The hallways are locked in a war between ๐–‹๐–Ž๐–—๐–Š and ๐–Ž๐–ˆ๐–Š.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Polaris knows her game takes longer. It's subtle. Her carefully calculated moves require time to come to fruition. But she and Ysabela are not in a sprint; they're in a marathon. Splitting the high school in half was always part of her plan. Sure, not every setback has been appreciated. It would be nice if some of Ysabela's victories didn't cut so deep. But if the town thinks they've seen the worst of the rivalry . . . well, let's just say, Polaris Emani has only begun to leave her mark on Mystic Falls.

From the very beginning, Vega ingrained a single lesson in Polaris. Don't tell anyone who you are. It was said with good intentions. She knew how dangerous it was to be a siphoner; discrimination { and potentially even attempts on Lara's life } could follow her. Danger might be lurking around every corner. But no young girl hears that and realizes she is being protected. All she thinks about is that being herself isn't enough. Being herself isn't safe. So she buried the real Polaris under wall after wall โ€” so many projections of who she thought the world wanted her to be that she forgot the truth. She forgot Polaris.

โฑโฑโฑ By now, Lara has honed her public image into a science. It is almost like she is two girls in one: the darling her school and town believe her to be, versus the ruthless tiger crouched beneath the surface. She plays her part perfectly. Others generally regard her as warm and charismatic. Though she holds her own in a conversation, it is neither biting nor rude. And Polaris is a phenomenal listener. { You have to be able to understand the people around you in order to be able to get them to be devoted to you. } She fakes her empathy so well that it could almost rub off on that black soul of hers. But she knows better than to let that happen. She has cultivated a reputation for all things good and ladylike: being honest, charitable, loyal, and friendly. She is even known to be fairly sweet towards those who have clearly chosen Ysabela's side . . . when she knows it counts for a public appearance, that is.

โฑโฑโฑ But all of that is little more than a ploy to get what she wants. Even if some of it was genuine at the start of high school, it has melted away by now. Polaris, on the inside, is a raging machine of jealousy, resentment, manipulation, grudges, and out-of-control mood swings. She is obsessed with power and control. What people think of her means absolutely everything. That ditzy, carefree persona hides a cruel calculation. Yes, she leaves her room and locker in quite the disarray, but that's only because she is meticulous about every other thing in her life. Each laugh, cute stutter, and hair flip adds up to her next move in the battle to be queen bee. She hates surprises almost as much as she hates losing. Thankfully, she's never had to deal with much of either . . . except when it comes to Ysabela. And if things don't pan out exactly how Polaris has determined they will, that perfect image of a warm girl might not be so easy to maintain. After all, sunshine all the time makes a desert.

โฑโฑโฑ Polaris also has a strange contradiction with her ego. Some days it's a bit out of control, but it's on the days she feels most insecure that she tends to, for example, post seductive instas. She craves validation in ways that a psychologist could link back to all of her childhood issues, but Lara doesn't think she's the therapy type. Sure, her father abandoned her. Then again, her mother spoiled her rotten. It was pretty clear that Vega was being so easy on Polaris because of the guilt she felt in Devesh leaving. She never really said no or punished her daughter, thinking she had already faced enough rejection from a parent. It was meant to soften the blow, but those sneaky abandonment issues still found a chokehold on Lara. It basically only made her a brat. She doesn't take no for an answer, often leading to little tantrums. That much she hides on the inside these days, but the other damage is hard to let go of. The sneaking suspicion that she isn't good enough to keep anyone around can keep her awake all night and drive her crazy during the day. Polaris would do almost anything to keep someone from leaving her.

โฑโฑโฑ With great charisma comes great responsibility. Those who have had Lara's favor shine down on them know how wonderful it feels to be in her good graces. She would do literally anything for her tribe, though not from the kindness of her heart. Polaris wants to manipulate people into, of course, not leaving her, but also giving her what she wants. She sees most of her relationships as a means to an end. Most of the time, it's power and control. But some of her connections are more complicated. If you think she will feel guilty for using you, think again.

โฑโฑโฑ Lately, Polaris has had to deal with the worst: the unexpected. Except this new development has come from inside herself. She has a lot on her plate. Between cheerleading, all those event planning committees, volunteering in the community, pretending like she cares about her sort-of boyfriend, campaigning for dance titles, and the one million other activities she has signed up for . . . Polaris is simply spread too thin. She might be a siphoner, but she's still human.

โฑโฑโฑ Each "queen bee to be" rules the school with her own posse of girls. Though Polaris is very social and has an "allied" group that includes quite a larger crowd, her closest friends are Rowan, Charlotte, Kali, and Diane. Or, at least, they're the members of her "army" that she finds the most valuable. Each of them has a cutesy little nickname. It started as a joke a few years back, but they've stuck around. Polaris will always answer to Honey Bee or Honey from any of them.

โฑโฑโฑ Those four are the ones that she trusts the most nowadays. However, she grew up with only one close friend: Sam Annenberg. There was some kind of unspeakable bond that came from being abandoned by one's father. Mathias hadn't fled quite like Devesh, but he had never really been present either. But something happened between them the summer before high school. Polaris, truthfully, doesn't understand to this day. Sam simply . . . stopped being there for her. That dagger cut deep, especially given how Lara's greatest fear is being abandoned. She planned their entire futures together; they had the type of connection to be best friends forever. Apparently, Sam didn't feel the same way. She puts up with Polaris being popular somewhat, but it's clear she is just stringing her and Ysabela along to get what she wants. It's infuriating. Lara uses people; she doesn't get used. However, Sam's balancing act between the two sides has put her in a unique position. At first, Lara wanted to crush her like a bug. Playing dirty, however, is more Ysa's style. So she is forced to join in Sam's little game. A part of Lara, even now, holds back. Sam was the only person who knew the real her. Sam was also the only person that Polaris had cared for deeply โ€” not just for what she could gain from their relationship. Now it's all about wild parties and trying to keep Sam from aligning herself with Ysabela. But each time Polaris sees her old best friend, another part of her dies inside. Yet Sam is able to act like their friendship never happened.

โฑโฑโฑ Vega Emani runs the only pawn / thrift shop in town, out of the first floor of their house. It is pretty obvious to anyone that looks twice that there is no way they can have this kind of money from selling used clothes and bartering random objects. That is because Vega makes most of her income on the magical side of things. Witches have needs! And plenty of supernatural creatures travel to Mystic Falls to get the rare goods Vega is able to provide. Does that mean the occasional rumor about her secretly selling drugs occurs around town? Sure. But that's only because the townsfolk wouldn't be ready for the truth. Vega lets the rumors run their course. The story never sticks for long. Polaris, on the other hand, is getting a bit fed up with it. She used to like picking up "shifts" at the store because it was fun handling so many cool, powerful objects and encountering such bizarre clientele. Lately, she wants nothing to do with it, and she is tired of it being a stain on her reputation. But she can't get away, given that their home is literally upstairs.

โฑโฑโฑ As a siphoner, Polaris can inherently detect the presence of magic around her. Anything with power seems to hum. This does not reflect the same way in objects as it does in supernatural creatures. She knows when someone is a witch; their magic calls to her the loudest. But vampires, werewolves, and other creatures don't have the same tell. She can siphon their gifts, yes; however, there is no inherent way for her to look at someone and know they are more than human, unless they're a witch.

    โฑโฑโฑ Detecting magic in objects is a blessing, but as her home is literally filled with them, it often feels more like a curse. If Lara spends too much time at her house, the concentration of magic drives her crazy and gives her out-of-control migraines. It is good, then, that her busy schedule means she spends such little time among those four walls. But that doesn't change how so much power in one place can also wake her up at night. She often sneaks out just to walk around and clear her head in the quiet darkness. { Not me practically begging something evil in Mystic Falls to fuck with her. }

โฑโฑโฑ Witches are the natural enemies of vampires. Although Polaris is not a proper witch, she still feels aligned on this front. She largely blames vampires for the torment of humans and witches alike. She is also under the impression that she has never met one โ€” with perhaps a small exception of them coming into her mom's shop and quickly leaving town after. The existence of vampires in Mystic Falls has been shielded from her. In her mind, all vampires are terrible and blood-thirsty. They are a distortion of nature that should be killed. At least for now.

โฑโฑโฑ Polaris doesn't know it, but the Warrick coven saying that a siphoner is destined to assist one of them is all a lie. Covens tend to get rid of siphoners the second they're detected. Sometimes that just means dispelling them. Most of them . . . do even worse. That is because, if a normal witch turns into a vampire, they lose all connection to magic. If a siphoner Turns, then it is like their vampire nature becomes a constant source of magic for them to siphon. They are almost like a vampire-witch hybrid . . . a destructive force of evil.

โฑโฑโฑ Polaris largely prefers the "real" world over the supernatural one because that is where she has control. Because her gift is only activated when she actively steals magic from something { and because she is old enough to have it under control now }, she can largely live a normal life when left to her own devices. In the magical world, she's either a nobody or a malfunction. Why would she want to be a part of that, when she can have so much more away from it?

โฑโฑโฑ Thinking she is fated to be someone else's lackey has defined almost every part of Lara's life. It is the reason she has had to hide who she is. It is the reason she finds solace in a world without magic, instead of properly honing her powers. She might not be able to keep her cool if she finds out how many have lied to her. In fact, in the face of what the witches have done to siphoners, suddenly vampires don't seem that bad. Especially because witches view vampires and siphoners with the same disdain. Polaris knows she is more than what they say; perhaps, if her eyes are opened, she can realize that vampires are capable of being the same.

โฑโฑโฑ Underage drinking is almost a given in Mystic Falls. Kids learn how to sneak beer and liquor as if it were a required class. However, Lara started drinking later than most of her peers. As someone who is meticulous about her image and has a hard time giving up control, getting drunk didn't sound like her idea of a good time. These days, she quite enjoys some reprieve from her pent-up ways, but she still never drinks as much as others.

โฑโฑโฑ Lara loves to buy clothes and then sew, decorate, and alter them herself. Being one-of-a-kind takes work, and she's willing to put the effort in. She also has been known to make a few pieces all the way from scratch. Most of the time, though, she starts with a base and customizes it to her tastes. She almost always makes something extra thoughtful as gifts for her friends, so don't be surprised if anyone in her clique walks around in a

Let's face it: she is a "basic" popular girl. She's the captain of the cheerleading team, for starters! But this is the image she wants. Being a siphoner makes her different. It alienates her. By molding herself into what society expects from an It Girl, she regains control of her life. She loves pink, of course, and Lara keeps up with all the latest trends and fashions. You can always find her with an iced coffee and a scrunchie. Or two. This girl absolutely loves her hair { it's the closest thing she has to a religion }, but boy does she have a lot of it. They're her essentials to survive any day.

โฑโฑโฑ Despite popularity being part of the reason Polaris dove headfirst into cheerleading, it's actually the one extra-curricular activity that she truly enjoys. And that is definitely reflected in her passion and work ethic. She pours her everything into the sport. Despite this, Polaris is a surprisingly relaxed captain. At least for this first year at the top of the pyramid โ€” literally and figuratively. The team is rather inclusive and mostly free from catty bullshit. She doesn't play mind games with her girls, and she isn't weird about the guys either. Even though she does demand everyone's hair and makeup match on game days, she really couldn't care less how someone "represents the cheer team" outside of their performance times. Cheerleading is the one way Polaris knows how to have genuine fun. She is not about to ruin that by being a total bitch about it.

โฑโฑโฑ Polaris had her first relationship in eighth grade with Xavier Finchum, if you can call it that. They gave each other Valentine's cards and walked around the park together a few times. When Xavier tried to kiss her on a bench, she ran away. Lara still isn't sure why, but that was pretty much their break-up, given how she avoided him for the rest of the school year after that. She'd had her first kiss two years prior โ€” at a party on a dare. And she was too proud to admit it was about to be her first, so she happily kissed Gabriel Haynes in front of everyone. But something about Xavier closing his eyes and leaning in made her fight-or-flight activate. Funnily enough, they've actually hooked up a few times throughout high school, but she's always quick to chase him out of her house before he can even try to start some small talk.

    โฑโฑโฑ Even though Polaris knows she is bisexual, her internalized homophobia tends to get in her own way. It is almost like she gives into the fetishes of her sexuality as a projection. She has only ever dated boys, but she does have a habit of making out with girls when she gets drunk at parties. Then she can tell herself that no one can deny her sexuality. They SAW her make out with a girl! But when it comes to true romantic intimacy, Polaris finds herself only going for boys. Probably in part because she finds them easier to control. It is more than that, though. She would deny it, but deep down, she knows she likes only having to bring boys home to her mother. { Aka someone help this girl love herself and her sexuality, please. }

โฑโฑโฑ Besides Xavier in eighth grade, Polaris dated Evan Swan for four months her freshmen year. He was a year older and semi-popular, as a rising football star. It made sense to her at the time: date him to advance her social standing. So when she was bored of him, she broke it off. That man couldn't talk about anything except his next game. Or his previous game. Or practice. Terrible waste of her time! Since then, Lara has never actually held the title of girlfriend. She just has ๐“ฝ๐“ฑ๐“ฒ๐“ท๐“ฐ๐“ผ with people. Polaris loves extravagant dates, so she's more than happy to be taken out. And she has hooked up with plenty of people. But the idea of opening up and being authentic with someone doesn't sit well with her. Why have a boyfriend when she can have fun?

โฑโฑโฑ Cue Sebastian Warrick-Dupont. He is absolutely not cool enough to garner Lara's attention. In fact, she despises him. It is he that is apparently ๐“ฝ๐“ฑ๐“ฎ ๐“ฌ๐“ฑ๐“ธ๐“ผ๐“ฎ๐“ท ๐“ธ๐“ท๐“ฎ โ€” the Warrick she is meant to be an "assistant" to. He hasn't seemed like much of a threat to her. She's met his older siblings, and none of them had more of a magic hum than he did. They all turned out useless. But overnight, Seb's concentration of magic seemed to have quadrupled. Polaris couldn't help but notice. This is her entire future at stake. If she has to manipulate this boy into dating her so he doesn't reach his full potential, so be it.

โฑโฑโฑ Polaris is the token "pickle" friend. She is the least picky eater on the planet. If there is a topping or ingredient in something you don't want to eat, just give it to her! She loves getting the extra pickles on her sandwich. Sometimes her friends order them on theirs just to give them to her. It's cute.

โฑโฑโฑ On her sixteenth birthday, Lara's mom bought her a black Jeep. It was used, sure, but still, a beautiful car and all for Polaris. She's always happy to give people a ride. Only if they adhere to her strict no food or alcohol policy, though! Not after Kali Mooney ruined it for everyone by puking in her back seat.

โฑโฑโฑ Technically speaking, Polaris is not an only child. She has a half-brother down in Florida, where her father lives with his "new family" and tries to pretend like the old one never happened. Vega has heard the gossip of this, but she keeps it from Lara. Knowing that her dad is living a quaint suburban life with someone else isn't what she needs.

โฑโฑโฑ Polaris is weirdly sensitive to getting brain freezes. Every time she drinks a smoothie or eats ice cream, her senses go on overload. She also absolutely hates chewing gum. No, she won't tell someone to go spit it out if they're doing so in front of her. But everything about it . . . disgusting.

    โฐ โ€ข โ€ข ๏ผฆ๏ผก๏ผญ๏ผฉ๏ผฌ๏ผน โ€ข โ€ข โฑ

โฑโฑโฑ Polaris isn't sure how the Vegas came to be in Mystic Falls. She doesn't think her father was born here either; there's no one else with his surname around. But she would have thought that her mother would have an errant cousin or uncle somewhere. Vega says she was also an only child and raised in the town her whole life. However, Lara doesn't have a single memory of her grandparents. Is there really not another relative she could know? Well, she doesn't realize how Vega hides her since she's so ashamed of the siphoning gene. Polaris does have somewhat close family in North Carolina, but her mother won't be divulging that at any point. Things are better when it's just the two of them. There are fewer opportunities to spill secrets that way.

โฑโฑโฑ Polaris and Vega are as thick as thieves. They have a relationship very similar to Lorelei and Rory Gilmore, fraught with many of the same dependencies and insecurities. Though not as close in age as them, Vega raised Lara without any discipline. She views her mother as a friend. There were no boundaries, even when there maybe should be. Perhaps that is part of why Polaris has a difficult time accepting authority in any form, and why she lashed out at the idea of Ysabela being above her on the social ladder. She's never been forced to listen before. Devesh, on the other hand, haunts her. Lara refuses to acknowledge the slew of issues that came with his abandonment. And the news of his family in Florida will destroy her much more than she might let on. A secret part of her had convinced herself that he had a very important reason to leave. Something that made it not his choice. He would've never left on purpose! He had to, to save them! But seeing his happy suburban life will shatter all of that. What will she do, then, with all of those broken pieces of her heart?

Since its founding in 1860, Mystic Falls has been plagued by supernatural creatures. Death and torment seem to come knocking with a dark regularity. Part of the way in which The Council has long sought to counteract this is by building an incredibly tight-knit community. It is not mere small-town business-as-usual mindsets that make everyone so keen to know others' secrets. It is by design. Some skeletons in the closets can be . . . literal. All the events, galas, and meetings culminate for this very reason. The people in the town need to be on constant display. Idle hands make the devil's work, and nothing is more devilish than that which goes bump in the night. For one thing, if everyone knows each other, they are more likely to care for one another. They're more likely to stay in the town, even if the rumors get a bit out of hand. But all of this makes it much harder for creatures to hide or pick off strays from the pack. The pack is the entire town. There are no strays.

โฑโฑโฑ At least, there aren't supposed to be. That hardly works out perfectly in reality. However, it does generally fall in the favor of The Council. Against all odds, Mystic Falls does have a vibrant community of humans who live innocent and care-free lives. Does it technically mean there is an even larger supply of snacks for its predator foe? Perhaps. But all the same, the importance of cultural activities and being an active member in the community run deep. It is very strange not to attend at least most of the fun events that go on. People who aren't interested in this kind of lifestyle tend to move away, meaning nearly every family is involved somehow. That is the way things are in Mystic Falls. That's how it survives.

โฑโฑโฑ Classism also runs deep. Those six founding families said they would do anything for each other. However, when the Hansbridge name fell on hard financial times, the remaining five turned their back. The town tends to be quite conservative, especially in matters that affect their purses. They seem to have an unspoken belief that the rich are successful because they are good people who earned it. Those who aren't so lucky? Well, probably karma. Mystic Falls tends to consider itself to be a haven for the upper-middle-class American dream. If a family has more than that, good for them. If they have less, well, then they likely deserve it somehow. It's twisted and wrong, but this idea is so ingrained in people that it affects the town's society in many ways. How else are the other five founding families able to hold their place above everyone else so effortlessly? It is those big pockets and impressive mansions, of course. And the endless adoration everyone feels towards them through the decades of careful manipulation. Sure, some branches live more modestly than others. But the network of "the best and the brightest" seeming to always lead back to a founder name is no accident.

    โฑโฑโฑ Although modern high school is a far cry from life in the 1800s, influence from those days can still be felt in its hallways. { Especially due to how many events have the students in historical reenactment clothing. } The founding names are on every impressive statue or facility, from the gym to the theater to the library. The events, too, reflect antiquated beliefs. Why on earth is the need for a jock king and queen bee so entrenched in Mystic Falls? There are plenty of students who think they care less about something as trivial as popularity, but in reality, they've all been groomed to believe that having these traditional roles is a necessity. Some are so used to how things are done that they don't even realize that it deviates from the rest of America's high-school normal. { Aka, yes, I know this group isn't entirely realistic. Let's all just work together and pretend it makes sense. }

โฑโฑโฑ It goes back to all those events that make Mystic Falls so close-knit. One boy and one girl are ceremoniously plucked from their place in the throng of average and paraded around. Yes, their last name is almost always quite familiar. These winners go on to do great things. They're the ones who get into the best colleges. They're the ones who make the most money. People remember them. Every two to three years, a new boy and a new girl ascend. They make their mark on the town and the school by being in charge of all the important clubs. They do the best in sports. They win all their dance royalty. They build amazing futures for themselves. And then they do the right thing of settling down, investing back in the community, and supporting the town traditions. This rise and fall of new "inspirations" is a life source of the town. It is as natural as breathing.

โฑโฑโฑ These winners are important in more ways than one. The sports victories on the field? A new headline to hide the recent animal attack. The wonderful party going on? Both a distraction from something nefarious happening and a way for The Council to meet. If people are solely focused on these beautiful, shining faces of the best young adults the town has to offer, they don't notice other things crumbling around them.

โฑโฑโฑ Mystic Falls High School is not a large place, by any means. There are around 240-280 students in each grade. This allows for there to be plenty of people to participate in sports and clubs; however, it is not so big that students are offered anonymity among its halls. Especially given the nature of how invested and active everyone is in seeing one another at events, very few kids can manage to get by unnoticed. For better or for worse, you know almost every name and face around you.

โฑโฑโฑ That is the way it has always been. That is the way it was always supposed to be. But Polaris ruined everything when she didn't accept the natural order of things. And now the whole town has to pay the price.

It was actually quite surprising how little interaction, by small-town standards, there was between Ysabela and Polaris as children. It is possible that some kind of early kinship could've saved Mystic Falls from their endless game of tug-of-war; however, you can't change the past. Perhaps it was just mere happenstance that they only saw each other in passing. Or perhaps it was Jada and Marco Leander expertly navigating their daughter away from the other little girl they knew to be a perversion. Tamara Warrick might have barked at everyone to keep Lara's siphoner identity a secret so her own children didn't realize . . . but that didn't mean sweet little Ysabela had to be around the monster!

โฑโฑโฑ Of course, Polaris knew exactly who Ysabela was. Her mother has been the mayor since they were seven years old, but even before that, she was in the limelight. The founding families of this place always are. Ysa was paraded around town like a local princess. Polaris never found her that remarkable { back then }. She didn't know a big word like nepotism in those days, but Lara lacked a taste for it from the beginning.

โฑโฑโฑ Ysabela, on the other hand, wasn't keenly aware of Polaris until middle school. She had, of course, an air of familiarity about her. Ysa could see her on the street and recognize that she had, at some point or another, crossed paths with her. It was the vague awareness of growing up in the same small town. But she didn't know anything else about her because they had been in separate classes for their entire time in elementary school. Jada and Marco always made sure of that. However, with the varying schedules of middle school, they could no longer separate them. Polaris blossomed before the other girls of their grade. It was impossible to go unnoticed anywhere, especially in a place like Mystic Falls. She had a certain influence over people in school. She got comfortable. In many ways, she was the โ€œit girlโ€ of that small period before high school. It seemed like she was guaranteed to be popular later too. And in many ways, she was.

โฑโฑโฑ Of all the other same-aged children from the Founding Families, Ysabela was the only one who showed any leadership potential. { At least in her mind. } She was stuffed into room after room with them for Mystic Falls' ridiculous events, and it only took her a moment to figure out she was a cut above the rest. The other kids were a little too trusting or conforming. Amber and Maia weren't so bad; they made good allies. But it was clear she didn't really need the others. And then . . . this Polaris girl. She didn't seem to accept the way the town worked. She could have her fun, being cute in the hallways of middle school, but that was child's play compared to what came next.

โฑโฑโฑ No one, especially Lara, anticipated that summer before freshmen year when Ysabela shook off the awkward bits of adolescence and transformed into what seemed like an entirely new person. Ysabela believed the high school to rightfully be hers, as if by birth. Her mother had been the queen bee of her youthful days, not to mention the countless other founding family darlings who wore the crown. History supports such a theory that Ysabela was the rightful heir. Her lineage commands respect. But Polaris had gotten a bit too used to her uncontested reign in the years before. She expected the crowning jewel of popularity to belong solely to her. It was . . . a conflict of interests, to say the least.

โฑโฑโฑ People were captivated by them when they arrived in high school, but that didn't change that they were still freshmen. They had to prove themselves on the playing field. Polaris was keenly aware that her surname didn't help her chances, but she saw that only as a challenge. Ysa, on the other hand, had a natural advantage. Perhaps people could have noticed and stopped them before it turned into such a debacle. But no one expected it to go so far.

There are a few important traits that a true Mystic Falls Gem should have. She should be beautiful and speak eloquently. She should do well in her classes. She should be warm and friendly. She should run the event-planning committee. She should be the class president. She should be the head cheerleader. And, of course, she should be well-established in the community. Nora Byrne, Class of 2020, was all of this. { Sort of, but that's another discussion entirely. } Before her, it was Noah Annenberg. But the thing with Polaris and Ysabela? Neither one is the complete package. They are two halves of a whole, yin and yang. Polaris has a warm exterior that shields her secret darkness. Ysabela keeps up a frost to protect her vulnerable, loving core.

โฑโฑโฑ When every queen bee is a senior, she does her part of bestowing her crown on the next girl. Unfortunately for those with bad timing, a junior is almost never picked. Their reign will only last a year! No, it is her duty to defriend a few promising sophomores or freshmen and make it clear to everyone who her successor is. Boys operate on almost the same system. That is how Xavier Finchum was picked during his sophomore year.

โฑโฑโฑ Polaris was the only freshman who made the head cheerleading team in her grade. This immediately got her into Nora's good graces. Ysabela knew her from, of course, all the events of the founding families, but she also got to know Nora more during the second semester. They were both involved in student government together.

โฑโฑโฑ Unfortunately for Polaris, Nora remembered Sam's reign all too well. Who were the Annenbergs? They were nobody until Sam came along, and things back then were chaotic. To be fair, it wasn't Sam's fault that a million supernatural disasters happened at once. She wasn't aware of a single one. But they all, especially Nora, recall how it was in the town. Something wasoff. Marco Leander turning into a vampire was only the tip of the iceberg of secrets The Council was trying to keep under wraps back then. Sam was effortlessly perfect, of course, in everything she did, but that couldn't keep the world around her from slipping into chaos. Nora had been groomed to believe that was due to one thing: Sam wasn't cut out for that kind of leadership. She wasn't from a founding family.

โฑโฑโฑ Nora didn't know her boyfriend was cheating on her, and she didn't appreciate what that did for her image. Ysabela made a calculated choice to make sure it was that boyfriend who got ridiculed, not Nora. She appreciated that kind of move. It took skill to spin a narrative like that, and it took guts to be bold enough to do it without asking Nora first. That's when things shifted for good.

โฑโฑโฑ Suddenly, at parties, Nora would invite Ysabela to sit with her and the rest of her friends. She would pour them all the next round of drinks, Ysabela first, and make sure the younger girl was enjoying herself. Ysabela would show up on the senior's snap stories every once in a while. Then, the nail in the coffin was graduation. Nora took a photo in her cap and gown with Ysabela on the right and her cousin Maia on the left. "Look at my mini me's!!" she gushed on the caption. And Mystic Falls understood: the battalion had been passed on.

    โฐ โ€ข โ€ข ๏ผด๏ผจ๏ผฅ โ€ข ๏ผฆ๏ผฅ๏ผต๏ผค โ€ข โ€ข โฑ

โฑโฑโฑ Ysabela knew that she was neck and neck with Polaris during their freshmen year. However, she expected the other girl to concede to her on the first day back in the fall. It had been a fair fight, but town tradition made it clear that Ysa had come out on top. She even considered waving a white flag and inviting Polaris into her tight-knit group of new elites. After all, what was there left to fight for? But within a week, everyone was quite surprised to find that Polaris had no intention of "falling in line."

โฑโฑโฑ Rather than spend her summer idly, Lara had cultivated her own group of friends to go into battle with. And these bright, beautiful girls were clearly their own brand of elites. Diane Danton - from a founding family no less! And that only scratched the surface of her individual achievements. Rowan Takahashi - the most organized and put-together girl from a very respectable family as well, even if they weren't founders. Kali Mooney - a girl of both grace and spunk. She left everyone either dazzled or slightly afraid for their life. And Charlotte Warrick - the wildcard and the visionary. And don't you dare get on her bad side. Between the five of them, a good chunk of the school couldn't look away. They were major players socially, athletically, and academically.

โฑโฑโฑ It seemed like the rebellion would fizzle out in a month. Obviously, Ysabela would get control again! But her power lies primarily on fear and rumors. Neither really stuck to these girls. Her ice persona melted in the warmth of their sunny personalities. Absolutely, her brutal twitter still kept others in line. They were afraid to show disloyalty or defect. What if their dirty laundry was aired for the school to see? But a few still escaped her clutches.

โฑโฑโฑ It was quite a surprise when Lara's idea for the homecoming dance theme won over what Ysabela wanted. Suddenly, the tides were turning. And the attention she got as a cheerleader seemed to suddenly extend greatly over anything Ysa had as a sophomore class president. Or so it seemed, until Ysabela won the sophomore homecoming court anyway.

โฑโฑโฑ Students genuinely were afraid of what Ysabela would do to them if they crossed her. But Polaris and her ever-growing friend group were so fun! More boys and girls started eating lunch and spending breaks around them. The large and boisterous gaggle hung out on all the quads. Frisbees were thrown. Picnics were had. And laughter always seemed to be in the air of wherever the pack was congregating.

โฑโฑโฑ Mystic Falls was not prepared. Its system of selecting a leader is naturally full of competition. Normally it is clear that one particular boy and girl will always win, but a true head-to-head battle . . . the town could not handle the confrontation. And none of the students could get away from it.

โฑโฑโฑ Anyone in their own grade found themselves in between the two in classes. Sure, Ysabela took more honors levels than Polaris, but wars were still waged in a few of them. Especially because Lara's best friends could stick up for her in the lessons she wasn't in. Ysabela had control over a formidable trio, but her foes wide reach was constantly pestering her

โฑโฑโฑ And no event in town was safe. Where one girl went, a certain crowd followed. People tried to stay neutral. However, each girl or posse is involved in nearly everything on campus. Mere association with one side too long? Too bad, that's who everyone thinks you're siding with now. Anyone who thought they were able to stay in the middle by not making a decision was sorely mistaken. Sure, their actions and interactions may have seemed innocent in their mind. However, Ysabela's influence on Mystic Falls' rumor mill made it a truly brutal weapon. Word of mouth is powerful, and reputation is everything. Not making a decision meant the decision was made for you through gossip. Since people didn't want to get stuck on one side or another against their will, allegiances were often made publicly. Xavier, as the king of the kingdom, gets to traipse across the line a bit more than most. However, even his "true feelings" have designated him as a Ysabela supporter. Founding families have been groomed to look after each other like that.

โฑโฑโฑ Sam Annenberg has been, surprisingly, the only true neutral party. Others may think they are in their heads, but the rest of the school has them pegged on one side for some reason or another. What makes Sam so key is that she hosts almost all the best parties. And her sister Noah, the famous old queen bee herself, doesn't mind buying almost anyone underage some alcohol. Sam is cold like Ysabela, but she and Polaris have history. She has her hand in a lot of things but never gets caught up in a scandal that advances one girl or another. In fact, it's quite obvious that being a famous host has its own advantages. People often suck up to her to be invited to her more exclusive events. Because even though the big ones can be fun, everyone knows it's her smaller get-togethers that make the best memories. It is quite clear that both Polaris and Ysabela are courting Sam with multiple opportunities to pledge her allegiance, but she has avoided being backed into a corner so far. Not even the all-powerful rumor mill knows what to do with her.

โฑโฑโฑ Ysabela and Polaris don't often attack one another directly. It would cause too much disarray. But their followers do not seem to mind arguing on their behalf. The Mystic Grill has had to kick out a few patrons of rowdy teens who couldn't stop debating over something that seemed quite silly . . . until it turned into a fistfight. Ysabela almost put a store out of business once for their clear allyship to Polaris. The potluck fundraiser in town? Suddenly, it is clear that casting a vote for Polaris, Ysabela, or one of their friends for "best recipe" means so much more. Because Mystic Falls is a small and intimate place. And when a tradition as important and prolific as this is at stake, someone always notices. Someone is always watching.

โฑโฑโฑ ๐•ฟ๐–๐–Š ๐•ด๐–ˆ๐–Š ๐•ผ๐–š๐–Š๐–Š๐–“: Ysabela stands for tradition. You have seen her your entire life. She and her mother are a beacon of good looks, good money, and good standing. She was groomed for this life. She has her unconventional traits, but isn't that nice? She isn't a Starbucks bottle blonde. She has unique interests and her own way of doing things. And a part of you understands why she is so cold. That poor girl! Her father is dying. He's so weak he can't even stay home with them. That must be terrible to endure. So, no, she may not be friendly, but she is incredibly intelligent. Her words are always clever. You respect the points she makes in the classroom. And you know that she is capable of using her brain for some very calculated moves. Yes, you might even fear her a little. { Or a lot. } Coupled with Maia's sleuthing skills, they seem capable of digging up dirt on anyone. And you don't want to be on her bad side! You have your own secrets that you'd very much like to keep hidden. Or, at the very least, you just don't want to be publicly embarrassed. This is high school, after all. Mockery is its own form of torture. And you know a part of Ysabela must be able to let loose and half fun. After all, her other best friend is Amber Finchum. You hear her on the radio all the time. She's hilarious! And her taste in music is to-die-for. The three of them are all founding families. That means something here. You respect that. So of course you're on Ysabela's side . . .

โฑโฑโฑ ๐•ฟ๐–๐–Š ๐•ฑ๐–Ž๐–—๐–Š ๐•ผ๐–š๐–Š๐–Š๐–“: Polaris is the start of a new age. She's fun and bright. She listens to you and cares about you. But you get the feeling there's a little more to her than meets the eye. After all, not just anyone can take on Ysabela Leander. She must have a bit more under the surface than her sweet attitude lets on. Her friend group is large and boisterous. There is always someone to hang out with or something to do. She's a phenomenal cheerleader, and you know what to expect from her. In some ways, she's a very classic queen bee. You like her because she's easy to talk to. Why spend your time in fear of someone when you can adore them instead? And honestly, who really cares about the founding families? Polaris interacts with everyone, regardless of how well-known they are. She represents moving away from the old elite, which is a good thing. That rigid social order is outdated. But she still knows how to keep the best parts around. She is a phenomenal party planner, and events really come to life with her personalized touch. Her four best friends, also, are their own unique and wonderful individuals. When the five of them walk around together, they leave everyone enraptured. You appreciate how they don't shy away from being girly and fashionable, and this femininity doesn't compromise their other values. They seem to represent how you don't have to be afraid of their color pink to still be a powerful woman. Hanging out with them feels like going on an adventure. It makes you feel important. So of course you're on Lara's side . . .

โฑโฑโฑ Sometimes it feels like the entire town has to pick a side. In a lot of ways, they do, especially within the school itself. If a team or club is, for example, allied with Polaris, that does not mean only she has control over it or Ysabela cannot attend events associated with it. Individuals members can still feel however they want toward each girl. It just means that, if there is something that requires someone to give the final say, it is more likely to lean in favor of Polaris. The extra-curriculars tend to have the "assigned" queen bee as a member of it, but that does not imply that she is that invested or in charge of it. Some of them? Absolutely. But not even they can be spread this thin.

โฑโฑโฑ Every year, there are two prestigious titles in the town: Miss Mystic Falls and Prom Queen. The Queen is a senior no matter what, meaning neither girl has had a chance to truly be it. They have only been able to one the consolation title for their current grade. Miss Mystic Falls tends to also go to a senior . . . but not always, making this their most cutthroat battleground this year. Homecoming court takes a back seat to these other two, but it is still important. Like Prom, there is a Homecoming winner of each grade. Polaris had the first victory, but Ysabela has cruised just millimeters above ever since. With this year's homecoming switching back to Polaris for the first time since freshmen year, it appears Ysabela still has her work cut out for her.
