Garden furniture that can handle British weather

Right, so we've recently moved out to the outskirts of London, wanted to escape all the city chaos, pollution, endless noise that comes with living in the centre. Bought ourselves a house and we're getting it sorted now, both indoors and the garden area. I quite fancy sitting outside with a cuppa or two in the mornings, breathing in some fresh air before the day gets going. Need some decent garden furniture that won't fall apart after one rainy season though, because let's face it, the weather here isn't exactly forgiving. Where should I be looking for options and what sort of thing holds up best?

Moving to the suburbs is brilliant until you realise how quickly the weather destroys anything you leave outside. Those big warehouse shops and supermarkets sell garden sets that look decent in store but they're absolute rubbish quality, fall apart after one winter. You could go for wooden furniture if you like the look but be ready to treat it with oils and sealants every single year otherwise moisture gets in. If you'd rather skip the yearly maintenance, metal frames are more durable as long as they've got proper powder coating, bare steel just rusts the moment rain hits it. There's also synthetic wicker which is worth considering, handles damp conditions far better than natural rattan that soaks up water and rots.

Most garden centres stock furniture built for Mediterranean weather where rain's a novelty, not our climate where it pisses down constantly.
