Few people remember the old Alarico: the glowing and happy boy who lit up every room he strutted into. His parents were world travelers, instantly renowned but equally suspiscious when they arrived in the small town of Burdale. Their beautiful Spanish accents and sweet smiles won most people over immediately. It helped when they built a large, boujee house on the edge of town that brought the value of quite a few other properties up. Despite their years of global adventures โ” of never staying in one country for more than two years โ” it appeared that they would call this little place home. Forever.

They thought it was a safe and stable place to raise their boy and grow their family even more. Couldn't they travel to exotic places as much as they wanted, with the money they were saving by living here? Couldn't they move again when the kids were older, more appreciative of the experiences? It seemed like the perfect idea. Alarico's five-year-old face lit up with every new friend he made; he paraded around like he owned the place. When Hugo came along, he adored running in all the open fields near their house. Burdale would be the perfect home, the Trinidads decided. But to this day, staying is their greatest regret.

Seven years ago, all of Burdale changed, but it was the Trinidads who got hit first. Little Hugo's disappearance was a shock that reverberated across the town. Alarico was freshly eleven, hardly an age to imagine fantastical things. But that is exactly what he did. He came running home to his parents, screaming and raving about the monster that stole his younger brother. The expensive therapists that they flew in from around the world assured everyone it was his mind's way of protecting his own sanity. If it was a monster instead of a human, then Alarico could more easily justify his helplessness. Of course, at such a young age, he would have still been no match for a killer, but still.

The nightmarish stories coming out of him about that day were logged down as PTSD and hysteria. We have pills for that, all the psychiatrists assured. Although the Trinidads didn't want to medicate their remaining son into oblivion, he refused to acknowledge the truth about Hugo. He wouldn't stop talking about the thing he saw. It was like Alarico left them no choice.

Although it was just the end of elementary school, Alarico was the type that seemed to excell at everything he tried quite naturally. His teachers loved him and praised how well he did in school. They all wanted him to skip a grade, maybe even two, but his mother always insisted that he stay with peers his own age. He did extra lessons and already appeared to be a shoe-in for his year's most successful, most popular golden boy. But that Alarico withered the day Hugo disappeared, and he died when the meds drowned what was left of his personality.

The boy who used to sing happy Spanish tunes with his guitar while walking around town came to lurking in the shadows, flinching when others got too close or any strange noise scattered about. He begged the thing to come for him. Even as the years passed and the town tried to forget, Alarico acted like it would come back at any moment. It would take him, and he would be ready to fight . . . to rescue the little boy who was certainly still waiting for him.

Nearly all his friends faded from his life. They couldn't handle the darkness and depression constantly swirling around him. He never participated in extracurriculars. He only did well-enough in classes to pass, never to succeed. Any dreams or hopes that could have been for his future had vanished along with the citizens of Burdale.

Move on. It's over, they all say. But Alarico's obsession only grows. He has walls covered in theories, random items he swears are clues, and journals with horrific images painted across every page. It's madness. Even though he goes to therapy twice a week, even though he knows he's still a disaster, he started . . . not taking the medication. Not numbing the pain. After all of these years, that has been the one constant. He's been so scared to feel fully. But maybe that's what he has to do in order to finally solve it. To finally save Hugo.

Skye is a Cali beach girl, tried and true. With her father's career for the LA Lakers and her mother's successful real estate ventures setting up a plush lifestyle for the Dayton family, she had little to worry about in her beachside mansion besides getting in trouble for trekking sand inside ๐’ถ๐‘”๐’ถ๐’พ๐“ƒ. Skye loved having her brothers around to play with, and starting at five years old, she always directed the family Christmas play. With a bit of pestering, she convinced her parents to send her off to a summer-long, super intensive acting summer camp when she was seven. It was all that Skye had dreamed of and more, and from that first day, she knew acting was her heart and soul.

Chris and Liliana were reluctant for her to pursue fame at first. Chris had never been an all-star in the NBA, just a steady player, but he saw firsthand what being a celebrity could do to people. He wanted his daughter to have a normal childhood without that kind of pressure or lifestyle. At the same time, the Daytons wanted to encourage their baby girl to live out her passion. So it started small: commercial roles, minor modeling, an uncredited extra. They were reluctant for her to dive in because as her acting opportunities grew, Skye had a habit of neglecting her schoolwork more and more. Her parents were constantly on her about it, but she never felt like putting in the effort to get better grades. At ten, Skye landed a six-episode appearance on a hit Disney Channel show, Wizards of Waverly Place. Having looked up to Selena Gomez her whole life, it was even more than what she had hoped for. She wanted to star in her own Disney show and tried out whenever one came up, but it never worked out for her.

Skye's Disney dream finally came true after a two-year dry spell of only minor or extra roles, but it was not in the way she ever expected. She was going to be voice acting in a new animated film, Lilo and Stitch. Although there were challenging moments, Skye adored this new kind of acting and would love the chance to do it again. Either way, she felt like she finally had a chance to get what she wanted: the budding fame of being a real actress.

Then, in a flash, her world was not the fairy tale it had always seemed. Her childhood best friend and neighbor Chloe was killed in a car accident when she and her father were t-boned by a drunk driver. Skye was heartbroken and lost; she withdrew from school and did it online. She stopped acting. It was months before she left her house and a year before she could really smile again. Her parents desperately tried to get her to pick her life, her career, anything back up; they hated to see Skye so broken.

Eventually, a script for a small indie film fell into her lap, and to the shock of everyone who knew her, she ruthlessly pursued the role. Playing Mary Warren in The Sisterhood of the Night was the therapy that Skye had needed. All of the emotions that had eaten away at her, all of the grief that she had bottled up, were finally talked about and released into her character. For the first time, she felt like herself again.

With her smile and courage rediscovered โ” and knowing that Chloe would have wanted her to keep going after her dream โ” Skye Dayton grew bold. She wanted to act full-time again. Originally auditioning for the role in Gregory Girls out of love for her mother and how she had always been there for her, Skye never expected it to be the turning point in her career. A stint on The Secret Circle flashed but easily blew out after the show was canceled in one season, but the same would not be true for Gregory Girls. Charlotte and Charlie Gregory were the duo every mother and daughter wanted to be. The show was unexpectedly garnering attention, and Skye could not believe it. For the first time, people would come up to her for photos and autographs. She was getting called to please audition for a role, instead of desperately begging to do so. Real fame was finally coming her way.

Gregory Girls opened up the opportunity for her to play the role of Hannah Baker in Thirteen Reasons Why, a somber and personal role that she tirelessly worked to get right. Having premiered on Netflix just as the site was making a name for its own productions, she barely had the chance to breathe before juggling Gregory Girls filming as well. That's the way it works when you're famous: every moment is wild and face-paced. But Skye wouldn't have it any other way. She lived for it. How could she not, when it was everything she had always dreamed of?

Then there was a matter of her support system. She felt invincible with her wonderful family and close friends that jokingly called themselves The Pack. After three lower-budget seasons, Gregory Girls got picked up by The WC Network. It was a whole new world: more money, more fans, and more opportunities. Maybe it also helped that her co-star, Sid Brown, was all too good at being all too intoxicating. It felt like she could exist in that bubble of happiness forever.

Of course, life moved on for Charlie Gregory, and Skye had to admit that she was hardly the same wide-eyed girl who walked onto that set with little idea of who she was or what she wanted. Max Towns was no longer the primary love interest in the show, and Sid Brown . . . he hardly came around anymore. He broke her heart when they filmed the final season of Gregory Girls, then didn't even bother to promote it. She still vividly remembers that moment when he threw everything they ever had away. Some dumb stupid v-neck shirt. Tacky, old grungy shoes and flannel. Messy, messy hair. Sunken eyes. Emptier looking than when she had first met him. Barely held together at the edges.

Maybe it was just that; maybe he was only talking about the show. But filming those eight seasons had meant everything to her. It was how she met all her best friends. How she had meant Sid, who she loved more than she ever knew how to say. And yet, there it was: him saying everything she had ever been afraid to hear. It was more than the show. It had to be. Skye was stupid. Everything between the two of them meant nothing at all.

Amy still got the publicity she wanted, in some sad consolation, when Skye unfollowed Sid on Instagram and headlines of "FEUD BETWEEN BELOVED FRIENDS" ate up the tabloids. Skye gave strict instructions that no one could ask her about Sidney in interviews, and if any of them ever broke that rule, she was known to lash out and immediately leave. It only took two for the reporters to learn their lesson; she wasn't some sweet little girl they could walk all over anymore.

Skye tried to keep herself occupied. She starred in her first romantic comedy film, which she used to always think would make her so fulfilled. But something about that lack of happy ending in her own life left her wanting more. With Ellie drifting away on her own ambitions, some of the conscious that kept Skye grounded went with her. Henry, Art, and Skye had a way of bringing about dangerous, unpredictable parts of one another. She descended into the party scene with reckless abandon. The media took notice. She finally got some more traction for darker, more serious roles. Where was Sunny Skye now?

She got better at lying to herself about how none of it really hurt anymore. It didn't hurt when she only saw Sid at parties. It didn't hurt when little girls called her Charlie and said they only applied to college because the role encouraged them. It didn't hurt when her mother looked at her with ๐“‰๐’ฝ๐‘œ๐“ˆ๐‘’ ๐‘’๐“Ž๐‘’๐“ˆ. Skye should know; she had that same emotional, worrying gaze in her own reflection. The alcohol helped. The partying helped. She rubbed enough important elbows after dark to land some roles for the daylight hours. Or something like that.

A year in a blur. Only hazy, soft memories. A failed show. A new one that was supposed to be her next passion project, just like Gregory Girls. Not the star. But enough. New network. New coworkers. More pressure. More guilt.

It smacked her in the face.

    Positive.

She hadn't been keeping track of herself. Her time. Her money. Why would she monitor that so closely too? The pill . . . she used to be good at taking it. But she used to be good at a lot of things.

    It weighed heavy.

She always said, "I would never have a child until I'm ready." She always thought women should have a right to choose. To know they weren't ready. So why couldn't she do it herself? The gin and tonics turned to fizzy lemonades. She didn't tell anyone. She ๐“‰๐’ฝ๐‘œ๐“Š๐‘”๐’ฝ๐“‰ she knew the father, but why tell him when she couldn't be 100% sure? Twenty-five years old. Financially stable. She wasn't ready to tell her family, even though she knew they would be supportive. Before telling anyone, Skye wanted to get things in order. She wanted to show them that she wouldn't be the baby friend trying to have a baby. She would be . . . a real mom.

Five weeks was an awfully long time to indulge in her old lifestyle. Five sleepless, drinking, laughing, smoking, long weeks. Five weeks before she knew to change. Five weeks too late. Just before she was going to tell everyone โ” when the panic was finally settling in as true joy โ” her entire future disappeared in one bloody night. Whenever they visited the Philippines, her Lola always made a joke about it. Though it had been years since a visit back to her father's family, she still had a vivid memory of her Lola cupping her cheeks and telling her the old family wisdom. She told Skye to never cry. It happens all the time. You be strong. You just try again. It didn't mean anything to her back then, nothing more than a silly joke. Now it was advice that suffocated her.

Skye had never had the chance to tell anyone she was pregnant; how could she do it now? She buried it like a secret shame. She stayed in that Newport house for months, haunted by all the little trinkets and the room she had painted all by herself. A soft, beautiful yellow.

๐“Ž, she used to whisper as her hands drew circles on her barely-swollen belly.

When her therapist finally convinced her to move back to LA, she claimed she had just missed "the buzz" of the city or something equally fucking stupid. People bought it. Of course they did. Skye Dayton was another shallow Hollywood girl who cared little more for herself, her manicure, and her next exclusive bash.

What she thought would be the start of the happiest adventure of her life turned out to be the hardest year she had ever faced. But . . . it woke her up. For the millionth time, a girl told her how Gregory Girls inspired her to dream big, and she realized that Charlie could { and should } do the same for her. She applied for an online degree, nothing fancy, but getting her foot in the door. A college girl. She liked the sound of it. She liked it less when she actually had to study, but still. It gave her some purpose.

Although things with the cast on The Magicians were not as tight-knit as she once had, she grew an unexpected friend in Mads Mikkelson as they filmed Polar together. He was like a quirky uncle. As they nearly finish production, she will be sad not to see him around every week. He always read right through her with that piercing wisdom, and she needed that small way he encouraged her to keep going. Mads is the only one besides her therapist that knows what happened.

And now it's all hitting her at once: the completion of her first year of school; the first anniversary of her miscarriage; the end of filming Polar and the beginning of The Magicians season 3 looming; and that stupid, incessant pull in the back of her mind.

๐ƒ๐„๐’๐‚๐‘๐ˆ๐๐“๐ˆ๐Ž๐ โŠฑ Sariel has an alluring beauty, as is the case with most elves, but it can often bother her that people care only for that. What of her hard-earned skill sets? Her prized loyalty? No, no, focus again on the pretty face with its hauntingly dark eyes shining under the platinum hair. Is that perhaps why those eyes are so often getting rolled in annoyance, or her full lips are curved down with disdain? At least her lithe body lends itself to agile, acrobatic movements. She has a very feline grace about her, matched by the intimidating panther at her side. It is also not unusual for her to paint designs across her face, arms, or chest. Sariel prefers to not discuss the history and meaning of them, finding it an invasion of her privacy. But from the meticulous way in which she dons them, it is likely that they are all symbolic in some fashion.
โ €โ €โ € โ €The elves of Sariel's city have an intricate culture regarding tattoos that manifest themselves when one pursues their destiny. So far she has . . . two. Most others her age have at least ten. A delicate band of peonies danced across her upper thigh when she first stepped into the material plane as a child, then a small set of horns tucked themselves on her left rib cage when she joined Ayame.

Almost all of the common people and other folk that one might encounter along the Sword Coast or in the North have one thing in common: they live out their lives without ever traveling more than a few miles from where they were born.

Sariel is not one of those folk.

She is from a distant place, one so remote that few of the common folk in the North realize that it exists, and chances are good that even if some people she meets have heard of her homeland, they know merely the name and perhaps a few outrageous stories. She has come to this part of Faerรปn for her own reasons, which she might or might not choose to share.

Although she will undoubtedly find some of this landโ€™s ways to be strange and discomfiting, she can also be sure that some things its people take for granted will be to her new wonders that she's never laid eyes on before. By the same token, Sariel is a person of interest, for good or ill, to those around her almost anywhere she goes.

Her accent, mannerisms, figures of speech, and even her appearance all mark her as foreign. Curious glances are directed her way wherever she goes, which can be a nuisance, but she also gains the friendly interest of scholars and others intrigued by far-off lands, to say nothing of everyday folk who are eager to hear stories of her homeland. She can parlay this attention into access to people and places she might not otherwise have, for herself and her traveling companions. Noble lords, scholars, and merchant princes, to name a few, might be interested in hearing about her distant homeland and people.

Artus has spent most of his life trying to keep the Ring of Winter out of evil hands, but his return to Chult is focused on reuniting with his beloved Alisanda, who disappeared along with the city of Mezro during the Spellplague. No longer content to wait for Alisanda and Mezro to return on their own, Artus has been seeking the means to bring them back. He believes that Saja Nโ€™baza, an ancient guardian naga, can help him. As such, his search has been focused on locating the ruins of Orolunga, where the naga is said to dwell. Fate has handed Artus two traveling companions: a saurial named Dragonbait, whom he met in Port Nyanzaru, and an elf named Sariel.

That is the hubris that comes with youth not yet being knocked down. As in-denial as she may be, Lotis' fears are more psychological โ€” never being loved, never being good enough, having her heart broken, and the like. It's why she always fakes an easy confidence. Anything to get around having to actually allow someone in. Because if that happens and they don't like her, Lotis can't keep lying to herself.

๐šœ ๐š ๐šข ๐š• ๐šŽ . Provocative. Lotis learned to sew not from duty but from necessity. She hated all the posh, constricting garments thrust on her by her aunties, and ripping them apart turned out to be more dangerous than practical. { Though don't be worried. She still knows how to make tearing work in a pinch by now. } Her thermal bath uniform is one of her most proud endeavors. When her mother is nearby, it is easily the same boring ensemble everyone wears. But a few cleverly placed buttons and snaps means that, within a few seconds, she can go from average helper to seductive temptress. Tips are much better that way; how else was she going to afford to follow her dreams? Lotis often gives into stereotypes about Seleneans. She wears anything that makes her seem like an innocent, lovely goddess newly ascended from the briny abyss. Wide, kind eyes. Cascading fabrics that barely cover anything, as if she doesn't know she should be ashamed of her body. It's all a ruse to be desired, and more importantly, underestimated. If people think they have this beautiful, naive girl in the palm of their hand, they won't be prepared to guard themselves against her attack.

Lotis can't help but be enamored by Gethsemane, so different than most of the girls she knows from home. But she is not here to make connections that drag her back to Selenos. And she equally fears that people who know her planet as intimately will be the first to see-through her ruse of innocence. Karya infuriates her in a way that most likely hides a very intense jealousy; what she wouldn't give to be such a natural force of talent and charisma. However, Kitty seems her most likely ally in the beginning. She is the perfect little pet to latch onto for Lotis' chosen persona. What threat could be easier to overlook than one that hangs out with a princess?

She laughs at your jokes melodiously, to boost your ego and make you like her a bit more. Her fingers often tangle through her signature Selenean white hair. Though her eyes feign naivety, they also can often be caught flashing a sultry wink. In groups of people, Lotis would rather observe than be heard first. She likes to know the layout and characteristics of people before diving in. She is a skilled conversationalist but prefers to keep people at a distance emotionally, in order to never show her own vulnerabilities. Nowadays she constantly fidgets with the little circlet on her left thigh that turns into her mecha-suit, as if it still doesn't seem real to her to have one.

Lotis enlisted the moment she turned nineteen, having waited years to become a mecha-knight. Her mother, who owns and operates a thermal bath where Lotis worked up until joining up, has no idea that she will be leaving for the space station soon. Being a strict Selenean traditionalist, her mother would only attempt to stop her. A natural troublemaker and slick liar, Lotis has always been the black sheep of her family, the exact opposite of what a โ€œgood Selenean girlโ€ โ€” poised, nurturing, โ€œnot an arsonistโ€, etc. โ€” ought to be. Sheโ€™s just always been a rambunctious handful with a penchant for rolling through good-looking boys/girls on holiday with their families. Lotis wonโ€™t tell her mother; she plans on sneaking away to port early on the morning of departure. And she wonโ€™t look back either โ€” nothing could make her do so.

โ‹† .:ใƒปยฐ Lotis has never known love except from her mother. She knows her father passed away sometime during the pregnancy, though she doesn't know why. No one will tell her even twenty years later. As such, her mother's extended family was heavily involved in raising her. Although Lotis has no siblings, she was so entwined in the lives of her many cousins that they might as well be so. However, from an early age, Lotis was always regarded with an air of disdain. Everyone seemed to know a secret about her that she was unaware of. Something made her . . . unworthy. This distance made her desperate to be liked for many many years. But being pushed aside constantly fostered a bitterness in her as she grew older. She had desires unquenched by her very average Selenean life. And she loathed the people who called her family, who demanded so much from her yet gave nothing in return.

โ‹† .:ใƒปยฐ Lotus probably knows the layout and secrets of her province more than any other citizen. Years of exploring it alone, coupled with her unbridled recklessness, have made even the more dangerous spots seem little more than a playground to her. And knowing all of the ins and outs of its caves have made her the ideal guide for any tourist wanting an authentic Selenean experience. Too bad she'd rather leave them stranded and take their wallet than show them an authentically good time. But isn't this what they deserve, after decades of tourism corroding her beautiful planet anyway?

The lithe, digitigrade legs of this grey and white { colors pending since I have no image in mind while I write this, and I might have to change my idea to suit what I find } suit allow for the user to tread quickly across the ground or through the air. Whisps of what seems like fabric billow about, but make no mistake. The thin sheets of metal are flexible but still lethal, and their mobility allows them to thrash and cut unpredictably. This part of the suit is intended more to confuse or misdirect attention rather than destroy. However, its ability to wiggle into tiny places means that the feature can often disarm other suits by cutting wires and disrupting signals. { Unfortunately, this kind of precision is proving quite difficult for Lotis to master. } The wings, a set of four, are settled with one pair across the back for speed and power and the second on the helmet itself, like aero-pigtails, designed for agility and control.

Lotis won her brand-new suit in a dangerous bet from a cadet originally from Scepter { which she then claimed in a subsequent heist, when they wouldn't hand it over }. That girl will be less than pleased to see what should be her Academy graduation present parading around on a brand new trainee. Not to mention the story she had to tell her parents to explain how one loses an entire mecha suit.

As the original owner was not forthcoming with information on the whip, Lotis has not discovered all of its features quite yet. Apparently taking a suit custom-made for someone else does not lend itself very well to shifting ownership. The whip has been a bit stubborn in conforming to its new master, but Lotis is positive she can gain its loyalty sooner rather than later. She knows it can camouflage not by turning invisible but mimicking the surroundings and blending in. It also emits a deafening sound meant to cause chaos and disarray. Though she has not been able to test it with intense extremes, the whip appears to be impervious to temperature changes in the surroundings and will remain comfortably cool for the user. The more Lotis practices with it, the more she feels like her suit is meant to be a decoy that gathers attention and allows others to infiltrate or attack. Not that she really minds, but . . . couldn't there be something a little more interesting in her repertoire? She wants to find a way to infuse a flame-thrower { or something equally interesting } into the suit, but she may need to make a skilled friend in order to manage such a feat.

๐‘ช๐‘ฏ๐‘จ๐‘ท๐‘ป๐‘ฌ๐‘น ๐‘ถ๐‘ต๐‘ฌ. Eloy, Arizona. Frequently ranked one of the worst cities in Arizona to reside, Gwen was doomed before she even entered this terrible world. Her father was a useless drunk that disappeared before her seventeen-year-old mother could even tell him that she was pregnant. Amy had little options for survival. In a place where the largest employer is a corrections facility and the crime rates are some of the highest in America, all the honest ways of making a living end up suffocating. Good intentions just don't pay the bill. Honestly, she wanted to get an abortion and just be done with it. She didn't need this. But the protestant congregation and that dirty high school were their own little microcosms. It didn't take long for word to get back to her religiously-devout family. Once they knew she was expecting, they never let Amy out of their site. She would give birth to that baby if it was the last thing she did.

How terrible is that: make her sacrifice everything, give up her whole life, even if it killed her? Sure, Amy didn't die on the day that Gwen was born, but a piece of her soul did. She didn't have a motherly instinct. Nothing took over. But she did get kicked out of her family's place with the same infant that they once claimed would be the most precious thing. Funny how all that talk about helping, loving, and nurturing doesn't matter after the baby is born. Then it's just another useless strain on the broken system.

Amy felt guilty for never loving Gwen. She wanted to...but it never came. Not when she said her first words. Not when she took her first steps. Never. Gwen was never anything more than a burden on her already-broken bank, another mouth to feed, a waste of her time and energy. So she buried herself away in the drugs and the alcohol. What was the harm, if she was already numb? So into the rabbit hole went the little money they did have.

Gwen struggled to eat outside of her provided school lunch and barely scraped enough for anything else. Eloy is one of the poorest places in Arizona; her story was far from unusual. Teachers never batted an eye twice when she wore the same ratty clothes or just didnโ€™t have a pencil anymore. That was more than half their class. Amy went in and out of underpaid work. There were strings of boyfriends to keep up the rent of the trailer. A few more in and out to get a notebook for school. Too many mix-ups with ex-cons and dirty parole officers.

Only one ever hit Gwen. It happened when she was fifteen, maybe a breath away from being pretty under that dirty grimace and unwashed shirt. He told her as much. Gwen told him to go fuck himself. He didn't take kindly to her rejection. As Amy heard the crack against her daughter's cheek, she ran into the trailer in a drunken stupor and nearly killed him for it. In the haze of inebriation, she vaguely wondered if that was what it meant to love someone, if she really did care for her daughter somehow. But it was too late for her. She had fallen off the edge years ago.

๐‘ช๐‘ฏ๐‘จ๐‘ท๐‘ป๐‘ฌ๐‘น ๐‘ป๐‘พ๐‘ถ. Phoenix, Arizona. Gwen didn't want it to be too late for her. She didn't look back when she took off in the middle of the night. Amy had never wanted her, so what would the harm be? She conned her way onto a bus to the capital and found a place among the homeless. But it was all too close to the world she was afraid of: losing herself in needles and hits just like her mother. A location restaurant owner, who had had his own bout of wandering the streets as a lost teen, made a point of trying to hire some kids as busboys and dishwashers in hopes of saving them from that life. Of course she accepted the offer when it came to her. It was her only chance to make an honest living. Gwen figured, at worst, she would fuck up and end up back home with her mom. At best, she could save up for her GED and at least scrape by in a bigger city without asshole drug addicts coming around her place.

She certainly didn't give a fuck about falling in love. She was so young; she never saw it coming. But one night she went out with her friends just for fun to some seedy little place that didn't even bother to check IDs. It was the same night Gideon Dais was in town, running a little errand for his boss. No, not the type that sits behind a desk.

    Boom, boom.

    In and out.

He didn't have to think twice about murder. But he did think twice about her. So, fuck it, might as well say hey, right? Not like anything would come from it, right? He was twenty, four years her senior, and Gwen was immediately enamored. There was an unspeakable connection for them both. Suddenly he was inviting her back to Chicago. Suddenly she was saying yes. It was supposed to be her ticket out of a boring, useless, impoverished life. And sure, it was. But after she joined him, any chance to be normal disappeared forever.

๐‘ช๐‘ฏ๐‘จ๐‘ท๐‘ป๐‘ฌ๐‘น ๐‘ป๐‘ฏ๐‘น๐‘ฌ๐‘ฌ. Chicago, Illinois. By the time the flight landed at O'Hare, they had her story all figured out. Lydia Jones, they called her. They spun some back story just in case, but it's the mob: no one cares where you come from. They only care what you're capable of. Gwen and Gideon felt like they had so much in common: underestimated, unloved, and alone. At least they had each other. Never mind how she was too young to understand the way he manipulated and toyed with her. Never mind that she had to grow up way too fast. It was the closest thing to a loving home that Gwen had ever experienced.

Gideon played dirty, and he rose up the ranks faster than anyone his age should have been able to. It helped that his deceased father was one of the most notorious leaders they had ever had, but Gideon wanted to make it clear that this was no case of nepotism. Sure, he had daddy's money to cushion his life and surround himself with pretty things, but he was hell-bent on earning his own reputation and his own income. He taught Gwen everything he knew on how to be a top hitman, and she was always getting hired to clean up somebody else's dirty work. No one ever had to know that she was barely legal at that point. They didn't ask questions so long as the work was completed, and by god, it always was.

She lived those two years always on the edge. Of getting caught. Of getting killed. She lived for every heart-racing, gut-wrenching thrill of lavish parties, exclusive events, and elaborate assassinations. But she was no cold-blooded murderer. The guilt started to eat away at her, especially when Gideon began to dip into his own product. Gwen draws the line at drugs. She can't end up like her mother.

Gideon and Gwen didn't fight like a normal couple. They threw knives instead of words and planted booby traps for the other to get entangled in. The whole neighborhood could hear them scream at each other. And because it was the only kind of love Gwen had ever known, she thought this was how it was supposed to be. Finally, she had had enough. She begged for him to leave everything behind. She blamed the mob and that dark, seedy world for their problems. If they just went away together, everything would be perfect again. Gideon had already been thinking of expanding one of his ventures; what Gwen didn't know didn't have to hurt her. So they took off to the UK with the guise of leaving that all behind. She had no idea that Gideon was too lost in that life to ever get away.

๐‘ช๐‘ฏ๐‘จ๐‘ท๐‘ป๐‘ฌ๐‘น ๐‘ญ๐‘ถ๐‘ผ๐‘น. London, England. No one could exactly call what they did honest. They wasn't in their vocabulary. Instead of spilling blood on the floor, the deadly duo practiced the art of forgery. Mostly art, but they dabbled in all things that could make a pretty penny. Gwen struggled with the minute details of it all, but Gideon pushed her. After all, he had to keep her occupied so she wouldn't notice everything go on right underneath her nose.

He was trading in government secrets and massive arms deals; it was the best way to make it into the big leagues. But his pretty little girlfriend could only be tricked for so long. Gwen isn't educated, but she is far from dumb. So when she found out a little bit too much, it wasn't Gideon that discovered her digging. It was his partner. And he didn't take too kindly to having himself exposed. He stormed into Gideon's office and, after a violent altercation where they both barely survived, he demanded that Gideon would kill the girl or make an enemy of him and all of his people forever. It was not the international deal he was hoping to find. Nor one he was really able to defend himself against.

    But Gwen.

Sometimes she was still sixteen to him, still lost in that bar. Still the most precious thing he had ever seen.

    A shame, really.

He told her he would give her a head start of three days.

After that, he could make no promises.

๐‘ช๐‘ฏ๐‘จ๐‘ท๐‘ป๐‘ฌ๐‘น ๐‘ญ๐‘ฐ๐‘ฝ๐‘ฌ. Cairo, Egypt. Ending up there was an accident. Gwen wiggled herself in and out of five countries to try and throw Gideon off her trail. She wanted to get all the way to New Zealand, but she got stuck in Istanbul, Turkey. Instead of hiding in the bustling streets and laying low, Gwen tumbled headfirst into a Pathway. She still isn't sure how. When the Agency found her on a terrified rampage in 1856 Hong Kong, she had already seen and done too much. They had no way of covering up the truth...but they also didnโ€™t have to tell her everything. When they promised (see also: threatened) Gwen with a little office job working for them, she was actually ecstatic. A secret organization? What a better way to hide than to have all their resources and networks at her disposal? She lasted two weeks at Headquarters before she caused more trouble than anyone wanted to deal with. Gwen wasnโ€™t the type to who liked to sit around and push paper. Reluctantly, she got assigned to a team of field agents.

She was lucky, discovering the Agency. They don't always want to return the sentiment, but Gwen knows they need her too. Alongside members Margot and Remi, Gwen has spent the last three years exploring the time continuum and trying to correct whatever disasters have spun the universe out of control. She was just starting to feel comfortable and truly happy, like her life finally had a purpose, when Remi disappeared on a mission. A new girl, Isabeau, was assigned to take her place, but then she, too, faced a crushing accident that placed her in a coma. Gwen feels like everything is spiraling out of her control again. She has always called herself the unofficial monster-slayer as a joke, but she will never forget: humans are the real monsters.

It doesnโ€™t help that she just received a letter, in all-too-familiar handwriting.

โ€œThereโ€™s no point in running. I know everything.โ€
