Storage tips when downsizing your home
-
Last winter I finally admitted our Al Barsha apartment was too much for what we actually use. My wife was happy about the rent savings, I was less happy staring at a stack of boxes with old camping gear, baby stuff (our kid is 9 now), and a random collection of kitchen appliances I swore I would fix “one day”.
Once we downsized, the new place felt great but there was no hiding the fact we had too much. I tried selling a bunch of things first on Dubizzle, which honestly helped, but it also made me realize some items were not worth selling for 50 AED after a dozen messages and no shows. The sentimental stuff was the bigger problem anyway.
We ended up renting a small storage unit for the in between period, then kept it longer than planned. Here is what I learned the hard way, in case anyone else is doing the Dubai downsizing shuffle:
- Measure your bulky items first (suitcases, chairs, bikes). “Small unit” is vague until you are trying to Tetris a stroller into a corner.
- Ask about access hours and how loading works. Some places are fine until you realize you have to book a lift or the parking is a nightmare on weekends.
- Climate control matters more than you think in Dubai. Anything fabric, books, electronics, or photos can get wrecked fast.
- Clarify insurance, pest control, and how they handle moisture. I asked after signing the first time, not smart.
- Read the notice period. Month to month sounds flexible, but fees for early exit or late payment can sting.
I used affordable storage Dubai after comparing a few options, mainly because it was straightforward to set up and the pricing made sense for a short term plan that turned into a longer one.
Downsizing was worth it, just budget a little time and money for storage so you do not end up living out of boxes for months like we did.
