โWhere did you run off to again?โ
Surrounded by the family gardens, Nina surpassed her childhood pleasantly. Lovely, even. Her life bloomed flowers around every corner, up every alley. Her mom, Nylaphee charmed her with silly bits of magic, floating droplets of water or causing a tiny rain-storm. Their mother, Willamina, slightly more dignified in her approach to child-rearing, stuck to striking a tiny flame on her fingertip and lighting her pipe as a means of impressing Nina. Ninaโs brother, Iggy, many years older than she, was oftentimes more like an uncle than a true older sibling. Like her, he has the capacity to manipulate light energy through a similar use of rainbows and sunlight. When he was around, the family felt whole, completed. The Heavenstone household was full. Ninaโs early life was stocked with countless parties with the neighbors, nights spent together as a family, and annoying her loved ones with her absurd what-ifs and little bits of kiddie magic (including a small flame to the living room curtainsโฆ).
โAre you running away again?โ
As Nina grew older, so did the rest of her family. So did the rest of their feelings. The old magic simply didnโt do the trick any more, so to speak. Rather, Ninaโs mom left for a normal outing, heading towards the woods to gather supplies for their seasonal potion, which is often sold towards the end of the year in order to help people with yearly allergies and protection. The potions required a surplus amount of yellow-grass blessed by starlight, which often could only be found in mass quantities in a woods a few towns over. Nylaphee had gone on the expedition, lonesome, for over a decade. For some reason, this instance resulted in her death, supposedly via getting lost. Nina cannot believe, in her heart, that her mother would get lost, but part of her canโt help but hope thatโs all it was.
Some people, like her mother and brother, believe it had everything to do with her wanting to escape. Iggy listened all morning to their parents arguing, walking past Nina, who was hiding behind the banister to the stairs, on his way to scream at them. He told their mom to go on her own, get the ingredients needed for their best-selling item. Center yourself, had been his exact words. Their mom twisted her mouth, saying, โFunny you should mention. Thatโs what your mother said we should do.โ The two parents passed glares between each other, though moments later, they were whispering quietly in the doorway. Iggy had gone for a walk at this point, but Nina watched her mothers hug, however briefly, before Nyla left.=|
Within a few hours after the grand, mahogany door to the estate closed, the family changed forever. Nyla didnโt come home, and soon after, Iggy wouldnโt either. Her disappearance and subsequent assumed death deeply wounded Iggy, who refused to believe that his birth mother had died. He believed Willamina had something to do with it, had to have. His mother was alive out there, simply gone from them due to the stress of living with Willa. Nina never bought into these lies, but this often hurt Iggy and confused Willa. It was always that stolen moment, that brief reprise from all the anger in a moment of long-lost love, that led her to believe whatever happened was not an act of her mother. Though, the events of the coming years would challenge that. Iggy left to find Nylaphee, exploring the great world of Una. He hadnโt spoken to them in years, though every year the Heavenstones would receive a miscellaneous package of yellow-grass. It always makes the best new-years potions, the kind Nyla would be proud to see produced and sold under her family name. With her years of disappearance, Willa continued to teach Nina the family traditions regarding magic, especially spell-casting. It appeared that her grief, or guilt as Iggy would say, led to an almost militaristic approach to magic and to life. Stifled, to say the least.
Willamina worked tirelessly to preserve the family legacy, expanding their shop in town and pushing her own magic to its limits. Fire impresses many and goes a long way with people looking to profit off of sun magic. Willa was more than happy to provide, knowing it was helping to keep her wifeโs memory alive, burning as hotly as one of her most toxic licks of flame. Nina was roped into this dynamic, expected to hold the same status as her mom, who was widely regarded and well-loved by most everyone who met her. There were times where Willa would encourage her to embody some of Iggyโs ferocity, passion for the craft. Nina was asked not to be Nina, but some imitation of her brother and mom. Willa would tell her to stop acting so dramatic, that she was doing so much more than adolescent Philonina was, that she needed to pull her weight more. Nina wasnโt excelling enough as a witch, wasnโt impressive enough. As a person, independent of her magic, she always failed to be sweet enough, kind enough, loveable enough. Her life was a constant game of her trying to be better, getting lost in the process. Rather, covering up in the process. It was suffocating, and Nina had to escape
โNot you, too.โ
On a random night with a sprinkling of rain, the type that always reminded her of her mother, Nina made a move to run off on her lonesome. She checked the mailbox as she got to the end of the estateโs driveway, waving hello to a bird that was surely stuck due to the water. She eyed the letter inviting her to Nymโs Palace. She was to court an Elite, if she so chose. The golden letter felt heavy in her hands, perplexing. There was a decision to be made. She grabbed the paper, hid it in her jacket, before running back to the house.
Her mother had been at the shop, toiling over a new potion batch, when sheโd made a move to leave. Coming back, it was only a few minutes into her unpacking that her mother returned home. Willa saw her only daughter, wet from the rain, trying to undo an over-packed ruck-sack in the foyer. โNo you, too,โ sheโd said, angry. She pulled at her young daughterโs shoulder, shocked by how Nina had waited until she was fully grown to try and run off. Nina had fear in her eyes, unsure what her mother was trying to do. Then, on instinct, she pulled out the letter. โI was just going for a walk when I saw this,โ she told Willa, who let go of her. It was the first and last time she ever touched her daughter in such a rough manner, but for now, Nina avoids being within armโs reach of her.
Quickly, after the awkward entanglement and the blatant lie the pair believed, they prepared Nina for her journey. Rather, Willa felt conflicted, unsure if she wanted her sole family member to leave. This resulted in a lot of the two avoiding each other, solely discussing her departure. To Nina, it felt as though her mother couldnโt wait to be rid of her. To Willa, it felt as though her daughter was punishing her. It occurred to Nina, as she began to prepare, that she didnโt have any real reason to want to go off and galavant with royalty. It appeared that sheโd gotten herself into a pickle that couldnโt be undone, especially when she didnโt have any other option than simply leaving. At least, maybe, she can get a hot, new friend out of it?

Ninaโs capabilities are primarily related to one environmental element: rainbows. Her magic revolves around manipulating light energy to her favor, though this comes with its own set of consequences.
The ability to manipulate light. In Ninaโs case, this relates specifically to rainbows and light energy.
The ability to create fire. For Nina, this is another off-shoot of manipulating light energy in order to create multi-colored flames.
The ability to create illusions. Through utilizing the power of rainbows and light energy, Nina can create veneer illusions. This is one of her more powerful abilities, so she uses it sparingly.
The skil to view different parts of the past, future, and present, especially if a scrying device was present during said area and time you wish to see. For Nina, she uses a natural pink amethyst crystal ball, which is usually in her room by her altar.
The skill of manufacturing magical liquids and other consumables through the use of magic, spell-casting, herbs, and other natural materials.
The skill of using magical intention and manifestation to create a powerful language-set. Her family has one that theyโve used for generations upon generations. For Nina, this comes with
With her abilities comes a price. The need for heat and light energy, both of which are key to her magic, is most poignant. Because of this, she often needs the sun present for her abilities to be fully-effective and not present someโฆ quirks. At night, her abilities are severely diminished.
As a little-quirk to her magic, her body tends to heat up quicker when sheโs doing any form of light- and heat-based magic. Spells, potions, scrying, etc. are pretty basic, but forms of magic related to the sun and rainbows require her body to strangely produce more heat. Normally, this doesnโt bother her too badly, though there are cases where she has passed out from the pain and the heat.
Another element to her magic is that it weighs a certain toll on her body. Oftentimes, this only occurs after quite a few uses of her magic, in particular one of her more unique abilities. Usually, she can pass by with just eating a cookie after a few too many spells (like 5-10+)โโโโโโโโโโ
