══════ PERSONALITY ══════

       Curiosity killed the cat, but it hasn't caught up with Maia just yet. She is deeply drawn to mystery and secrets, wanting, more than anything, to find the answers. And the journey to find those answers are just as entertaining, or maybe even more so. But what kind of mysteries does boring old Mystic Falls offer up to her? Nothing more than bored housewives and reckless teenagers. Still, she makes do. If there is a secret, expect the nosy Maia to already be on its trail. She very rarely lets something go once her interest has piqued. And like they say, "there isn't a Byrne alive who likes being told no". Tell Maia there's no story, tell her she's making things up in her head, and she'll sink her heels in deeper. When she has a gut instinct, she follows it — even if past incidences with those gut instincts should scare her away. Though up to this point, the most world shattering consequences have been spats between friends and trips to the principal's office.

       That much alone should make her a kind of teen terror to her parents. Yet, she makes it up to them with her absolute devotion to her family. She protects the triplets fiercely; any school yard bully with their sights set on them has the oldest Byrne to answer to. Maia always tries to present herself as a perfect daughter to her parents; acceptable grades, the best babysitter, a kind helper, you get the picture. Reginald and Naza don't know the nosy and troublemaking side of Maia. They wouldn't recognize their daughter in the girl who sneaks out her bedroom window when night falls or can follow a scandal like a hound who has caught a scent. They would still find it hard to punish a daughter who has managed to charm the pants off most of the adults in Mystic Falls.

       Among friends, Maia feels comfortable enough to make her opinionated and comical attitude known. Few would call her cowardly, and even fewer would have the balls to say it to her face. Not everyone falls for the spunky girl's charms, though. Others she turns off with her stubbornness and one track mind. The people who really want to hurt her aim for the weak points in her armor: how she can never take first place in anything, how her impulsive plans always end up in someone getting hurt, her bravado that is most certainly all an ACT. She doesn't want people to know how softhearted she can be and how easy it is to hurt her.

       Maia keeps others at an arm's length, juggling different masks so that no one ever gets too close. Lest they start to figure out that as much as Maia loves a mystery, she's shrouded in one of her own creation too, all to protect herself.

══════ BIOGRAPHY ══════

       The bond between Byrnes runs deep. They're a family who would give whatever their loved ones needed, wanted, hell, just fancied even. Because at the end of the day, who can you count on other than the very people who share your blood. And for all the sins the Byrnes committed, they would never harm each other. It was that kind of family that Maia was born into: fierce in their love and insurmountable in their dedication. She is completely unaware of the Byrne's past, at least as far as their dalliances with the supernatural go. All she knows is that both of her parents would go to the end of the Earth for her.

After all, for a time, 𝒔𝒉𝒆 was 𝓪𝓵𝓵 they had.

       The triplets came as a surprise to the entirety of the Byrnes clan. Naza was in her forties and Reginald worried for his wife's safety with such a late pregnancy. His worry only worsened when they went in for a scan and they went from expecting one baby to 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐄𝐄. But worries over Naza's health were no match for both parents' worries for their first born. Just shy of nine, Maia had come to expect a certain kind of life, one where it was just her and her parents. Sharing the spotlight twisted the child's stomach. The two day protest she spent locked up in her room is still a major hit among Mystic Falls parents. It was only outshone by the absolute breakdown Maia had when she was told to expect three little siblings.

       But she was a Byrne. There was nothing more 𝖘𝖆𝖈𝖗𝖊𝖉 than their family. From a spoilt only child to a fearsome older sister, it was Maia who underwent the biggest change when the triplets were finally born. Though the changes in her father were noted. It was as if Reginald 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙙. He had always been a no nonsense kind of man, his kindness only spared for his family and distraught kids at his practice. With the birth of three more kids and the mere threat of his wife being harmed in the process, he grew especially protective over his kin. Maia was right at his side, watching those who circled her family like a hawk — from child to protector in the matter of nine months.

       Still Maia didn't know the 𝑾𝑯𝑶𝑳𝑬 𝑻𝑹𝑼𝑻𝑯, didn't know anything about the dirty laundry hanging just above Reginald's head. Maia bore the weight of a cruel history on her shoulders without even realizing. And while her father dominated The Council, a king in his own court, Maia grew up. Soon she wasn't just the cute Byrne daughter, but a teenager. And teenagers had a habit of hearing things they weren't supposed to.

       She shaped her penchant for trouble and scent for gossip into a weapon. Her cousin, Nora, warned her of what was to come when she entered Mystic Falls High. under co.

══════ HER FAMILY ══════

       The Byrnes are not Mystic Fall's police. They are so much more. From the very beginning, they have been the heart and soul of The Council. All the strategy, resources, and knowledge that goes into fighting vampires can probably be traced back to someone from their clan. Although the town’s law enforcement doesn't belong to them in name, there's nothing that goes on there without Reginald's approval. He has enough money to get just about everyone on his side. Who cares if they're paid-off yes men? There isn't a Byrne alive who likes being told no. If anyone were to try and look up the history of how such a fortune came to be, they would only find very empty answers awaiting them. Meaningless words about factories that morphed into bigger industries. Nothing close to the truth. Old habits of oligarchy die hard. The Byrnes prefer that the town not remember how much more their fortune grew after a certain . . . tragedy involving local "civilian" casualties during the civil war. Let sleeping dogs { or vampires } lie, right? Dr. Byrne is, somehow, even less fond of the competition that has recently come into town. Ever since Jada's stupid, useless husband got turned into a vampire, the Byrnes have been forced to put up with the Juarez family. Reginald considers himself the head not only of his branch but of all the Byrnes. There is a lot of prestige that comes with that. Furthermore, he likes being the town's biggest benefactor. Having to share some of his spotlight with a family who hasn't been here for half a decade yet? That was never in the cards. If getting rid of them also means undermining Jada Leander, then it's two birds with one stone.

═══ POTENTIAL DYNAMICS ═══

• Maia is going to need victims of her sleuthing. What kind of dirt does she dig up on people? Whose life does she royally fuck up?
• Recently I've become a wh*re for unrequited love plots. Let's hurt Maia's feelings, shall we? Give her a crush to pine after but to know, whenever she sees the person with someone else, that they'll never be hers.
• I also have a weakness for bodyguard plots ( : I was thinking that after Maia figures out the truth regarding the supernatural and her family, her dad might have someone watch her back — would be someone who's had training and in the know with the supernatural shit. Maia will probably resent them at first but what's wrong with a little frenemies to lovers action. Might even be fun if her dad has them keep an eye on Maia when she doesn't know anything just yet and is like.... "why is this person around me all the fucking time".

═════ FUTURE PLOTS ═════

• The grand reveal. Only so much time can past before Maia starts to piece together the Mystic Falls's mystery. I imagine this would be a two phase plot line; the first of which being Maia stumbling upon something supernatural. The second, her figuring out her family's involvement with it all. And then guilt is going to sucker punch her. The second part will definitely cause a rift between her and her father. They do fight from time to time, but it's more like a typical dad and daughter relationship. Maia adores her family which is what will make this whole thing that much more devastating.
• The above plot may just coincide with the larger story arc: the 29 vampires buried beneath the town. I'm trying to figure out timing because there are fun possibilities in both Maia figuring it out before she's involved in the 29 plot and after, because the one consistent idea I have with both those options is Maia getting kidnapped or interrogated— at the very least stalked by a vampire or two ya know, oop!! It would be fun and also horrible for her to find out her family's history by the very people who want to break out the victims of her family's crime. YIKES. Okay now I'm talking myself into her learning about her family's history after getting involved with the plot because I'm a monster.
• I think for now I want to keep Maia human, a very Stiles from Teen Wolf esque plot where she's in the supernatural drama but not actually in it, ya know? Then again there is a sweet, terrible irony in a vampire turning Maia in front of say ... HER FATHER as penance for the Byrnes's past and Reginald's own hatred of vampires. If not Maia, then maybe her mom, whoopsie.
