Her family is such new money that it seems more likely that they will lose it all within a generation rather than continue on as a great family. It was just a few years before her very birth that they required it, by any rate! So when she was nearly the jewel of the season, it got even worse. A pig in a dress, no doubt. Unfortunately, they will feel they are proven right by her failure of a debut. Theo was undeserving of the attention she once received, and she is of no use to anyone.
๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ผ๐ธ๐ท๐ช๐ต๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ โง Theodosia is two people: the woman her father has crafted her to be and the girl she truly is. The problem seems to be that she has mistaken one for her true and only identity. She has the rare case of having a father who was more involved in her upbringing than her mother. Horace paid careful attention to all of his children. When Theo's brother would fail at anything, Horace would expect nothing less than perfection from her. For a long while, Theo relished in being somewhat of "the favorite child," and this framed most of her outlook on life. She never called or thought of herself that way outright. All the same, being constantly under her father's microscope still greatly affected her in a way where she is blind to her faults. If any of her siblings called her out on being the favorite, Theo would probably have no idea what they mean. She is cold and calculating, as well-instruted. Having no example of a healthy relationship in her own life, Theo does not know how to connect with others. She can hold a wonderful conversation at a ball, but truly knowing someone and being vulnerable in kind . . . this art is completely lost to her. She doesn't know what it means to be a friend. Theo sees people as a means to an end. Using, manipulating, and discarding them is her normal. Though she is not a narcissist, Horace certainly is. Theo has been refined to think highly of herself; however, this is mostly a mask to hide her insecurity. She has been treated as a lowly outsider for her entire life, and yes, it has made her quite bitter. Showing such an emotion in polite society would never be allowed, nor would Theo let herself do so in normal situations, but this leaves her in a precarious situation. Her need to control every part of her life can be undone by a single mistake, as she does not handle any kind of setback well. An explosion is always thinly veiled right below the surface.

The Colbornes are a rather unexpected lot on the scene. Thirty years ago, the Admiral-turned-international-merchant Horace Colborne grew his family's fortune so boundlessly that he was able to buy a large plot of land and construct a truly magnificent, decadent castle at its center. He very much expected the King and Queen to reward both his service and affluence with a title, but such an honor was denied of him. He has been stewing in anger ever since. His four children grew up in the shadow of this fury. When his eldest son Jacob dared to marry in the gentry for love, claiming he was technically gentry himself, Horace's sights turned to the next victim who could give him what he wanted: his daughter Theodosia. Despite her outlandish features that contrast greatly with her siblings, she is to be the bridge between this family and truly having a place in the ton. Theo has always loved the idea of being a lady. Gowns, parties, and dancing all excite her. She was happy to rise to the challenge in front of her. Secure a title and make the Colbornes noble at the cost of all else. After all, her marriage could do wonders for her two younger siblings. Her father delayed her coming out in order to hone Theo into the perfect weapon. Despite being shunned by high society most of her life for being new money, her inflated dowry and lovely countenance would win even the greatest skeptics over. It was the perfect plan. Even Lady Whistledown predicted she would be this year's diamond. Too bad she has already made a ruin of herself in her debut. It seems all those lessons were for nothing. You cannot turn a pauper into a princess. Although Theodosia is determined to turn her disgrace into little more than a stumbling block, this world is not suited to forgiving mistakes, especially from title-less outsiders. And her life is much more rife with shame than she yet realizes. A failed coming out was only the beginning of her season's woes.

She had the looks, the finances, the perfect curtsey, the gorgeous smile, and enough witty conversation to keep you interested without ever dipping into scandal. You could almost overlook her lack of family title. The Crown Princess was willing to. But that's a long-gone reality for Theo now. And to get back to the top of the ladder again, she may have to use her claws.

To have such a power over them . . . to know their every secret and use it to her advantage . . . it would be more brilliant than anything her father could have come up with. It would be her chance to lord over them without a title to her name. She has the wealth and the time. Certainly the motivation. Perhaps even the cleverness.๐ญ๐ช๐ท๐ฌ๐ฎ ๐ฌ๐ช๐ป๐ญ
