𝑂𝑟 𝑠𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑝𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑛 𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑚 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑠, 𝑎𝑛𝑦𝑤𝑎𝑦.

When 22-year-old Vicky Chang decided to join 𝐺𝑒𝑚 𝑄𝑢𝑒𝑠𝑡, the latest and greatest game that everyone on Discord was raving about, she thought nothing of it. The gameplay looked cool, if slightly unfamiliar, the graphics were stunning, the outfits were 𝑔-𝑜-𝑟-𝑔-𝑒-𝑜-𝑢-𝑠 (and they weren’t forcing her to fork over $10+ per skin, like some people. What did they think she fucking was, made of money?!). But best of all?

𝑆ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑏𝑒 𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑡𝑟𝑦 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑎𝑚𝑒!

Armed with nothing but more hours of 𝐿𝑒𝑎𝑔𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝐿𝑒𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑠 gameplay than her mother (and her grades) would have liked and a determination to fuck shit up (and to look cute while doing it), Vicky stepped into the VR world of 𝐺𝑒𝑚 𝑄𝑢𝑒𝑠𝑡. There, she could fight dragons, collect fun shoes, and make her own hot sauce (for when the pseudo-medieval European food got too bland), without getting out of bed or spending a single cent of money that she desperately needed to set aside for her tuition. Win-win, right? Vicky sure thought so.

But it was only a matter of time before people who died in-game started dying in the real world, too. And with the disappearance of the game’s enigmatic creator, Vicky has to choose: does she try to get the hell out of there before the last 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 is used up, or does she stay and battle it out to the end? 𝐴𝑛𝑑 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑏𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑑?

Upon entering the game for the first time, a player will be asked to 𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑎 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑠, 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐺𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑. Once they’ve progressed through more of the game, they will be able to join a 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑦.

Items consist of: 𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑠, 𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦/𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑙𝑙 𝑠𝑐𝑟𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑠. A partially-completed list can be found ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒. These can be used on any player or NPC in the game, provided that said NPC is part of an in-game event that allows such items. All the items are ranked from 𝑆𝑆 𝑡𝑜 𝐻 (𝑆𝑆, 𝑆, 𝐴, 𝐵, 𝐶, 𝐷, 𝐸, 𝐹, 𝐺, 𝐻), denoting their rarity and how difficult it is to obtain them. Note that forcibly taking items from other players is permitted. However, if a player is killed in-game, all their data - including their inventory - is erased. Items are obtained through crafting, marketplaces, defeating in-game monsters/NPCs, and clearing levels.

Leaving the game is possible through a 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 (𝐵-𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑘), or by bribing Jacqueline, an NPC in Level 7 (the Tearoom). Note that once a player has left the game for over 10 days, all their saved data (including their inventory) is erased. To win the game, a player must 𝑠𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑓𝑢𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑐𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟 𝑎𝑙𝑙 48 𝑙𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑠 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑐ℎ𝑜𝑠𝑒𝑛 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑦 (if they decided that they wanted to join a party in the first place).

Although the original creator of the game - 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑠𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑦 𝑎𝑠 “𝐺” - disappeared shortly after beta testing was completed, Gem Quest still remains wildly popular. About a year after its initial release, 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑦𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑤ℎ𝑜 𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑑 𝑖𝑛-𝑔𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝑚𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑢𝑠𝑙𝑦 𝑏𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑛 𝑑𝑦𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑛 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑒 𝑎𝑠 𝑤𝑒𝑙𝑙. At about the same time, 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 stopped being available for sale (though none of the previously acquired potions were erased), and Jacqueline stopped accepting bribes from players wanting to leave the game. G re-appeared for long enough to announce that once a party of a specific Guild cleared the entire game, their entire Guild would be brought back into the real world, while the remaining two Guilds would have to battle it out in Level 40 (the Obsidian Coliseum) to determine which one of them would also be able to return to the real world. The news about this frightening new development has only started to reach the taverns and tearooms of Gem Quest.

𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐂𝐈𝐄𝐒 . . . Almost every variety of 𝑓𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑠𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐷𝑁𝐷 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑠 is play-able within Gem Quest. Popular species include elves, vampires, werewolves, faeries, and demons. Each unique species has its own powers, strengths, weaknesses, and limitations.

𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐒 . . . At the start of the game, 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑦𝑒𝑟𝑠 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑜𝑝𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑡𝑜 𝑐ℎ𝑜𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑎 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑦 𝑎𝑠. Although some of them are similar to traditional DND classes, there are a few important modifications that the Gem Quest developers have made to some of them.

Parties are the best way to keep safe while moving up levels, and not only because it’s nice to have numbers on your side; parties help to make up for what each member is lacking. Combined, you and your party can make a formidable player. 𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑜𝑛𝑙𝑦 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑗𝑜𝑖𝑛 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑦 𝑎𝑡 𝑎 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑑𝑒 𝑢𝑝 𝑜𝑓 𝑢𝑝 𝑡𝑜 𝑠𝑖𝑥 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑦𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝐺𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑. When your party has beaten a level, all party members must move on together! New levels only admit single players or parties as a unit. 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑡: 𝐹𝐿𝐼𝑃𝑃𝐴𝑁𝑇. Well, to be perfectly frank, Inferna is…kind of a bitch (and, in real life, she was kind of an attention whore as a teenager, though she mellowed out a bit once she got to college). Inferna’s perfectly aware of this, but she also like, doesn’t care. With her sarcastic and irreverent sense of humor, Inferna is flippant and frivolous, always brushing other peoples’ concerns and criticisms off with a breezy “eat a dick” (or something along those lines). Inferna is also a bit vain, especially when it comes to her hair, and ℎ𝑎𝑠 𝑎 𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑖𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡/𝑖𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑐 𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑒 𝑜𝑓 ℎ𝑢𝑚𝑜𝑟 (and she always appreciates a good nerdy science pun).

Although she really isn’t the nicest person around, Inferna’s 𝑜𝑢𝑡𝑔𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑝𝑢𝑛𝑘𝑦 𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑒𝑖𝑡𝑦 (𝑝𝑎𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑎 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑡ℎ𝑦 𝑑𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑛𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠) has still made her a couple of friends (and said friends are usually just as thick-skinned as Inferna can be). She’s a bit too cocky and reckless for her own good, and she can be blunt to the point of being cruel. 𝐼𝑛𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑛𝑎 ℎ𝑎𝑠 𝑛𝑜 𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑛𝑜𝑟 𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑡𝑙𝑒𝑡𝑦 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡𝑠𝑜𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛𝑠 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑠ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑖𝑡. Inferna’s not afraid of confronting someone head-on, and she has absolutely no patience for pussies who would rather subtweet her than talk trash to her face.

𝐹𝑙𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑙𝑒, Inferna’s not always very good about texting back or making plans. She’s extremely petty and makes way too many smart remarks for her own good, and has quite the temper on her - Inferna is both easily excited and easily angered, and can be rather capricious if she hasn’t had any coffee. However, she’s also quick to forgive (if not necessarily to forget), and she can be surprisingly perceptive and observant sometimes. Inferna’s a bit of a hypocrite in that she’s not afraid to call out stupid bullshit when she sees it, 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑠ℎ𝑒’𝑠 𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑜 𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑚𝑢𝑐ℎ 𝑓𝑢𝑙𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑢𝑙𝑙𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑡 ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑓, 𝑎 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑠ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑙𝑦 𝑎𝑑𝑚𝑖𝑡 𝑡𝑜. And although she doesn’t seem to take anything seriously, Inferna can and will hold a grudge until the end of time if you piss her off enough.

Finally, some people can find her downright annoying, which Inferna is also perfectly fine with. 𝑆ℎ𝑒’𝑠 𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑓-𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑒, 𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑘 𝑎𝑓𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ ℎ𝑒𝑟, and she’s definitely not as clueless or oblivious as some people think she is - it’s just a matter of if she cares enough to confront somebody about something. And, spoiler alert: nine times out of ten, she doesn’t.

Inferna had a 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑦 𝑛𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙 𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑑ℎ𝑜𝑜𝑑, 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑑; she was a rebellious kid for sure, but her parents were patient with her and let her do what she wanted, so long as her grades didn’t slip (granted, her mom was pretty pissed when she decided that she wanted red hair on a whim one day and just went ahead and got it dyed, but beyond an annoying lecture, there were no other consequences). Inferna got into the gaming scene pretty quickly as a kid - she passed over stupid games like Call of Duty for ones where she could fuck people up and look cute, like 𝐿𝑒𝑎𝑔𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝐿𝑒𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑠 or 𝑊𝑜𝑟𝑙𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑊𝑎𝑟𝑐𝑟𝑎𝑓𝑡.

Inferna got into a fairly decent public university in Baltimore, and was subsequently 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑜 𝑝𝑢𝑟𝑠𝑢𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑛 𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑑 𝑑𝑒𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑏𝑦 ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠. Inferna thinks that CS is alright - it’s not her favorite thing in the world, but it’s not unbearably boring like reading wack ass Shakespeare plays and then bullshitting a 2000-word essay about it - and so far, she’s passed all her classes. Which has to count for something, right?

The only reason she really decided to was because she was tired of forking over $10 for each damn skin in League, and with a game like League, what was the fucking point if she couldn’t have a cute character? She slowly got more into it as time went on - the character customization options were absolutely gorgeous, plus she liked being able to actually sample the in-game foods - 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑖𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑙𝑦 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝑖𝑛 𝑎 𝑤𝑎𝑦, 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑒 𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑔𝑜 𝑜𝑛 ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑎𝑑𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑠 ℎ𝑎𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑜𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟. A way better use of her time than sitting in the library trying to debug her goddamn code, in Inferna’s opinion.

As Inferna began to take Gem Quest more seriously, she built a reputation for herself as 𝑇ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝐵𝑖𝑡𝑐ℎ (𝑇𝑀). Thanks to her penchant of hoarding items and coins, she has gotten quite coin-rich, and thanks to her affinity with games that were similar to Gem Quest, she 𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑙𝑦 𝑎𝑑𝑣𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑒𝑟 𝑙𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑠.

Inferna was…surprisingly nonchalant, regarding G’s recent announcement that players could not freely leave the game anymore. She figures that if something horrible happens, she can always steal a 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 from some rando, but until then, she’s just going to enjoy life. G told the real world about the development, Inferna’s assuming, meaning that her parents won’t be expecting her anytime soon. It has an enormous marketplace and massive waterways and thoroughfares for merchant ships and water taxis/gondolas (and the occasional water dragon), ritzy inns (for the incredibly coin-rich), baths, and one of the most extensive in-game libraries. If you are a member of the Ammolite Guild, the library is free to peruse, but members of other Guilds will have to pay a small fee to access the contents. Here is the home of the never-ending Flowering Festival where fairies dance in rings and try to get you to eat something in order to trap you with them forever. As a result of the “no eating food of the fairy realm else you’ll be trapped there forever” rule, a great many players are trapped on Level 10 forever or until their Guild beats the game. Though, no one calls these players unfortunate. Between the unending party, wild dancing, soothing flute music, and the bottomless honey wine.. their circumstances could be much worse. 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐃 | 𝑜𝒷𝓈𝒾𝒹𝒾𝒶𝓃 𝒸𝓁𝒶𝒾𝓂 The Descend is a black chasm pocked with geode caves and the ancient remnants of a once-great subterranean society of luminescent fae. It’s a favourite haunt of any dark creature, especially hobgoblins and fodden. It’s now an Obsidian community, whose main attraction is a fissure, dubbed “Euphoria”, in the pits of the Descend that emits scarlet, hallucinogenic fumes. Players have been known to while away around the fissure, in near-darkness, inhaling the fumes instead of completing the level. (Fodden - creatures who live underground, known to abduct humans. Their fingers claw through the dirt before they pull mortals under with them. Not intelligent.) ɴᴏ ʙᴏꜱꜱ

Beating this level awards the participants an SS-rank potion, ANGEL’S BREATH, which allows you to revive any one player who has previously died in-game. According to users on Discord, Inferna was a member of several parties in the past, but currently does not belong to any party. Once you arrive, you can use observatory on the shore of the Sea to get a sneak peek of the remaining 12 levels in the luminous lights that fill the skies above, even without having passed through any of them yet. Gather ‘round in the seaside village of Level 30 (or, if you haven’t beaten Level 29 yet, the quaint 𝐹𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑟 𝑇𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑛, where players have taken to using a scrying glass to watch the events unfold) to await the fate of the players as they descend below the waves to battle it out in a game of dodgeball featuring a ball created from an enchanted turtle shell that shoots spiny barnacles, noxious poisons, or stinging electric shocks, depending on the whims of Aydina. Being hit by the ball means disqualification - or worse - though the prize of a single 𝑆𝑆-𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑘 𝐴𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑙'𝑠 𝐵𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡ℎ might just make up for it…if you can escape the clutches of the players just waiting to take it from any party that emerges victorious, of course. But the real attraction is the maze behind the palace, with its white roses and playful snow angels. Normally, 𝑔𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑧𝑒 means that you’ve cleared the level.

The snow angels disappear into puffs of silvery smoke, and all travel potions - including the coveted 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 - in the inventories of players currently in the level are grayed out, meaning that they cannot be used. 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑟𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙 𝑖𝑠 𝑝𝑢𝑡 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑜 𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑑𝑜𝑤𝑛; 𝑛𝑜 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑛𝑜 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑠.
