[PANN] What is Star Beam's Musical Style? (An Unhelpful Guide to Star Beam's Title Tracks)

  • alt text

So after a post about Star Beam's visuals here in Pann, this time, I'm going to talk about their music specifically their title tracks. They tend to experiment on tracks. If you are new to the ByulBi fandom, I recommend you to listen to their title tracks first. Which genre suits Star Beam the best?

    • "Whatever" is Seubim's debut song back in January 2017. This song has an 80s new wave sound tackles about mixed signals (y'know, even if you flirt with her but if you don't want to commit then, get out. That's simple)

    • Next is their follow up track called "Syndrome" which was released in early March 2017 where they dance in roller skates which is the charming point of the comeback. The genre of the song is electronic club music which merges the disco & modern EDM. In this era, people admired their poise while performing in skates. It's like the sister of SPEED's "Want U" thanks to the heelys and the ever popular NCT Dream's "Chewing Gum" with the hoverboard. Performances aside, the lyrics is their commentary about a fan falling in love with an celebrity to the point that she doesn't want to deal with reality. This song is written from a fan's perspective

    • Next up is "Mermaid Princess" which is one of their breakout hits which was released in June 2017. This song incorporates acoustic guitar and saxophone with a hint of EDM during the dance break. The song is basically the retelling of the original "Little Mermaid" wherein the girl fell in love for the first time but is not courageous enough to express her feelings and feels like no one will save her. This song screams "Damsel In Distress". This song became one of the representative songs of SeuBim since this helped them cemented their place as "fairy crush" idols.

    • Released in July 2017, "I'll Be There" is their first attempt on the 90s inspired music which was inspired by both 90s bubblegum pop & hip-hop. The song talks about assuring her loved one that she will be there and doesn't need to pretend who they are not.

    • They shifted to a more retro sound with "Click!" back in April 2018 where it has groovy bass lines with a story of a girl trying to get rid of some boy who constantly tries to get attention but this girl doesn't settle for less and is waiting for her Prince Charming (okay, we get it Star Beam, fairy tales are your recurring motif)

    • "Super Boy" which was also released on the same day as "Click" which has a electro-synth groove that reminds us of 2nd Generation K-pop. This song talks about moving on from a blind relationship and looking forward for the next relationship. "Super Boy" is their take on the girl crush concept which is popular in the 3rd generation K-pop but instead of hardcore hip-hop style, they go for slick & sophisticated look with suits (& some girly iterations)

    • Next is "Starry Moment" which is similar with "I'll Be There" since they're both inspired by the 90s New Jack Swing. The lyrics feels like a scene in a Disney movie where the princess realized that she's gradually falling in love but she is too shy about it especially the setting happens during night time full of "stars". BTW, that song was released on May 2018 (Take a guess which Disney film 🀣)

    • 2019 witnessed the musical growth of Star Beam through the release of "I Am" (Februrary 2019). Unlike their previous releases, this has a contemporary hip-hop & R&B feel to it which talks about self-love and self-confidence. That's why they used swans as motif of their visuals in this particular era thanks to the "Ugly Duckling" & "Swan Lake".

    • Lastly, their latest comeback on May 2019, "Hit That Drum" that featured a samba style percussions and bass lines with a charming point of majorette performance. This song reminds me of a summer festival that's why it's perfect summer title track for a reason

Here is my exhaustive guide of Star Beam's title tracks. I hope you appreciate it~~~~
