𝙿 𝙴 𝚁 𝚂 𝙾 𝙽 𝙰 𝙻 𝙸 𝚃 𝚈

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Kyla would be a textbook Slytherin if she was admitted into Hogwarts, though perhaps one that at least deigned to hang out with Ravenclaw since she still loves her intellectual pursuits. More often than not, she cares more about what is convenient than what is right. A very chaotic neutral character at her core. Kyla does much better in one-on-one situations than groups. For one thing, she does not really like meeting new people, which often comes with the group hang territory, but more importantly, she feels like those kinds of environments foster people to exaggerate their stories, lie about their accomplishments, or other general ways of being fake. Nothing ever bothers her as much as that. Sure, she does somewhat hypocritically have a habit of suppressing her own emotions instead of dealing with them, but none of that has the same consequence of truly lying. The same goes for small talk. She does not give a damn about how a random person’s day is going, nor the weather. Isn’t it actually more impolite to ask someone how they’re doing if you don’t care about their answer? At least her abrasiveness fits in so much more in New York than some of her previous residences.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Despite multiple instances of enemies-turned-friends that should teach Kyla to know better, she has a habit of judging people quickly and writing them off based on her initial impression. She is especially harsh towards Americans who are bad at geography and know nothing about the world outside their country’s border. This general air of annoyance also now extends to the plethora of tourists in New York. She would never admit that she still gets frequently lost like them; Kyla is way too stubborn for that. While she can seem to think she is better than people around her, she doesn’t really feel that way. She has that dangerous concoction of being confident while also extremely insecure. Kyla is incredibly fearful of failure and abandonment, which is why she can be so easily jealous and manipulative. She has really been working through both of these things, but it is hard to control that initial reaction to situations. If anyone checks out her wife in front of her still, it is nearly impossible for her to keep her cool. It's even worse when they're mistaken for two friends while out on a date. And any sort of set-back in her school or dream job path can send her reeling for weeks.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀So how did an abrasive girl like Kyla possibly end up married at such a young age? While the group of people she considers to be close is small, she would do anything for them. She actually means it when she says she would die for them. If they needed her, no matter how inconvenient or terrible or difficult it was, she would do anything for them. Once you’re in with Kyla, you can do no wrong in her eyes. You’re hers for life. She is also a very thoughtful listener. After all, her love language is words of affirmation. That is why she is so selective with her words; it is really important to be authentic. Kyla will use tiny details she picked up from listening to either be the best or worst person in surprising { 𝑜𝓇 𝒹𝑒𝓈𝓉𝓇𝑜𝓎𝒾𝓃𝑔 } you, depending on how much she likes you. She may love her tough-foreign-hottie exterior, but anyone who knows her can see that she is an absolute sucker for all those rom-com cliches. But shhhh! Just don’t tell anyone!

𝙲𝚑𝚒𝚕𝚍𝚑𝚘𝚘𝚍 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝙰𝚍𝚘𝚕𝚎𝚜𝚌𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Kyla was an unwanted little baby, the story of exactly why unwritten, that was happily scooped up as the second adopted child of Mathilda and James Veloso. A third little one soon joined their rank in the happy little family. It didn’t matter that none of them looked alike; they adored each other all the same. Kyla and her siblings grew up in the maze of Milan, Italy, where their mother had a high-profile job in some swanky international company that they never cared enough about to understand. They knew it kept her quite busy, but still very loving, and that’s all that mattered to them. Kyla will always equate innocence with that silly, boot-shaped country. Italian is the language she thinks in when at her most vulnerable, authentic self. Italy is the place she feels most at home, though her passport has the dreaded symbol of the UK instead of the EU emblazoned on its red front. With both parents as proud Brits, being officially adopted into their English family meant associating nationality as a fleeting, meaningless word. They only went to Great Britain for Christmas; the passport was no piece of home.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀When Kyla was thirteen, they moved to France. She had a hard time adjusting to the new world around her. Of course, she was raised with perfect English, but she hated French class back in Milan. Now it dominated everywhere she went, and she had a hard time making friends. It was so much easier to keep to herself; plus, none of her peers seemed as eager to spend eight hours on a Saturday in the Louvre with her. Their loss, right?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Kyla started to wonder about where she came from and those parents that decided they didn’t want her. She had always known she was adopted and didn’t think it meant her mom and dad loved her any less, but the weight of the mystery ate away at her. However, as hard as they tried, none of the investigators her adopted parents hired could overturn a single clue to her origin. She was doomed to never know, it seemed.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The Veloso family was decently well-off, but they refused to have spoiled rotten kids with silver spoons in their mouths. Each of them had lots of chores and high expectations. When one was old enough to work, they would get a job. The money made from that would have to be used for a car, a phone, or going out with friends. Simple as that. But Kyla still dared to ask for something quite above the pay-grade of a small café barista: studying abroad in America. Although initially stunned into silence, her parents decided to support her wild endeavor. After all, they had invested plenty in the sports teams of her siblings that Kyla had never asked for. It only seemed fair. She thought it would be a wonderful adventure; she never expected to fall in love-at-first-sight with her own American dreamboat, Alveretta Louise Moss. Despite living in North Carolina for an entire nine months, she never had the guts to tell Ali how she felt. So when she finally returned to France, there was a little weight on her heart. Unfinished business awaited her in the States.

𝚈𝚘𝚞𝚗𝚐 𝙰𝚍𝚞𝚕𝚝𝚑𝚘𝚘𝚍

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Kyla knew she was crazy, leaving her cheaper European uni opportunity behind to go back to America, but as she told her family again and again, "I just feel like I have to go!" The scholarships she found helped, and soon, she was packing her bags for an entire four-year experience in the country she had inexplicably fallen in love with. And then, there was that moment; all the fairy tales she built in her head came true. Alveretta attended that university too. They immediately became close friends, slightly overwhelmed by the size of their campus. After spending their first week jotting down their names on nearly every student organization and attending every freshman mixer ~~which Kyla hated and only did to hang out with / impress Ali. ah, insecurity~~, everyone easily associated them together. They batted all the "cute couple" comments off. Months went by where they shamelessly denied the chemistry between them. Alveretta was dealing with her own issues and was far from wanting a relationship. Kyla was trying to take the rejection in stride and smother her feelings by any means possible. She was not going to be the type who fruitlessly and creepily pined. But there was something unstoppable about their connection. Just friends blurred into casual friends-with-benefits blurred into 𝓈𝑒𝑒𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝑒𝒶𝒸𝒽 𝑜𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓇 blurred into . . . " 𝐻𝑒𝓎 𝒷𝒶𝒷𝑒, 𝒸𝒶𝓃 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝓅𝓊𝓉 𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓈 𝒾𝓃 𝓂𝓎 𝒹𝓇𝒶𝓌𝑒𝓇 𝒶𝓉 𝓎𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝓅𝓁𝒶𝒸𝑒 𝓈𝑜 𝐼 𝒸𝒶𝓃 𝓌𝑒𝒶𝓇 𝒾𝓉 𝓉𝑜𝓂𝑜𝓇𝓇𝑜𝓌 𝓂𝑜𝓇𝓃𝒾𝓃𝑔 ? " Shame about all those clubs they supposedly joined. The meeting times always seemed to be at the same time as their passionate make-out sessions. Oops.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀As a hot art history major from France, Kyla's reputation as quite the snob kind of proceeded her. It didn't help that she spent a lot of her time dragging Ali to every weird experimental show, nearby museum, and art gallery their college budgets could afford. But she didn't care that much over not being universally liked; she always preferred small groups of friends anyway. But watching Alveretta get along with just about everyone did have a way of making her feel inferior sometimes. Was Ali really happy with her? Their relationship endured its greatest test when graduation loomed heavy over them. They each wanted to desperately follow their own dreams, regardless of their significant other, and Kyla deeply feared that she would hold her girlfriend back.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀It was the greatest relief when both of them wanted to move to New York, and it felt like once again, destiny was fighting for them to be together. That is, until Kyla's visa request came back with a big fat "denied," and all of her dreams of living in America or being with Alveretta seemed to get pulled out from under her. "𝐵𝓊𝓉 𝓌𝑒 𝒶𝓁𝓇𝑒𝒶𝒹𝓎 𝓉𝒶𝓁𝓀 𝒶𝒷𝑜𝓊𝓉 𝓂𝒶𝓇𝓇𝒾𝒶𝑔𝑒 𝒶𝓁𝓁 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓉𝒾𝓂𝑒 ! 𝒲𝑒 𝓀𝓃𝑜𝓌 𝓌𝑒'𝓇𝑒 𝒾𝓃 𝓁𝑜𝓋𝑒 ! 𝒲𝒽𝓎 𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝒿𝓊𝓈𝓉 𝒹𝑜 𝒾𝓉 ? " It sounded so logical, spilling from her angel’s fervent lips. Her smile was intoxicating. Didn't it all make sense then? The visa pressure was just moving their time line up; it wasn't changing their life plan or anything.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Though it was not an elopement, since they waited for Kyla's family to fly across the pond, it was not exactly the wedding that they had dreamed of either. Courthouse budget, after all. Kyla's parents chipped in some for a more grand reception than they could have otherwise afforded, but the whole thing was still very chill. More up Kyla's alley than Ali’s, which is something Kyla will always feel secretly guilty over. She wishes she could have given her the giant festival she deserved.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀So, no, Kyla does not technically have a green card marriage, but she never pictured herself being the type to settle down young, and yeah . . . sometimes the whole thing really keeps her up at night.

𝙻𝚒𝚏𝚎 𝚒𝚗 𝙽𝚎𝚠 𝚈𝚘𝚛𝚔

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Every little girl who cares one percent about art, no matter where in the world she is from, has a dream to move to New York. Even if it is just for a second. Kyla didn’t ever think she’d live that dream; applying to the competitive program at NYU was basically a joke. Sure, her best friend Logan did make her kind of { 𝓉𝑜𝓉𝒶𝓁𝓁𝓎 } fall in love with the city when she brought her home there for a summer trip once . . . but actually going? Insanity. Yet the acceptance letter wasn’t an April Fool’s prank gone awry. Kyla was in! And the love of her life also wanted to pursue her dreams among the bright lights of the big city. Nothing could be more perfect than that, right? Well, until they realized what the rent is like. Of course, everyone thinks they know. But actually seeing the staggering numbers and poor conditions is enough to make anyone’s head spin. Brooklyn, it is . . .

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The Moss-Veloso duo found a "𝓇𝑒𝒶𝓈𝑜𝓃𝒶𝒷𝓁𝑒 𝑒𝓃𝑜𝓊𝑔𝒽" rate for an absolutely disgusting and tiny flat, but home is where the heart is, right? They arrived August of 2019, right in time to settle in before they each began their respective school years, with Kyla as a master's student and Ali as a teacher. It has been a jarring start. Even though Kyla prides herself on fitting into New York culture seamlessly, she is not as happy as she envisioned she would be. Her course load is crippling all on its own, but that doesn't pay the bills. She is killing herself with any job she can. And she knows that sometimes her very young marriage suffers because of it. They always had enough time for each other in undergrad. Now they live together and sometimes it feels like they see each other less. One crashes into bed while the other is asleep already, and they are lucky if they brush their teeth at the same time together in the morning. Wasn't there supposed to be the honeymoon bliss right about now?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Kyla might not be ready to admit it any time soon, but New York is destroying her bit by bit. Maybe she will find her footing and things will turn around, but she has never been one for optimism. However, her renowned stubbornness has been known to move mountains. The city may not love her back, but Kyla is hell-bent on leaving her mark anyway.

➙ Since starting grad school this fall, Kyla has had a bad habit of putting her student-teaching in front of her student position. I mean, it pays her student bills for her. How could she not give her all to those students? But, for the first time, her grades are suffering a bit because she isn't able to focus on her own coursework. Kyla is secretly terrified she isn't cut out for work in her field. Is this some sort of secret self - sabotage?

➙ All of Kyla's "𝑒𝓂𝑒𝓇𝑔𝑒𝓃𝒸𝓎 𝓈𝒶𝓋𝒾𝓃𝑔𝓈 𝓂𝑜𝓃𝑒𝓎" comes from a single - income source: the nude art modeling she recently picked up. It's quick and easy cash for not a lot of effort. But it does mean she has to take her ring off, of course, and some of these students have a habit of giving her a little bit too much attention once class is over. It's also quite hypocritical in general. If Alveretta were the one getting naked in front of strangers, Kyla would definitely be overwhelmed with jealousy. And yet, she does this anyway. It's just nice to have a job that doesn't require her constant attention, you know?

➙ However, the fun she has modeling has also made her wonder if she wants to dabble in actually doing it for real. It's a profession she has always kind of made fun of, if she is being honest, but that glamorous lifestyle of a supermodel is also incredibly enticing. Especially when everything she wants costs money : (

➙ Even though it's an expense and time investment that she cannot commit to, not to mention it being illegal in their current apartment, Kyla really really wants a pet cat. Toe beans!!

➙ Kyla almost never remembers to drink enough water and suffers from plenty of dehydration headaches because of it. Alveretta has come around to tucking little water bottles into her bags and sticking little love notes on them for encouragement, but Kyla still often forgets to actually drink them.

➙ Having had her fair share of a "𝑔𝑜𝑜𝒹 𝓉𝒾𝓂𝑒" in high school and the first few months of college, Kyla is quite confident behind closed doors and under the sheets. She may even be a touch . . . unconventional, but all is fair in love and war, right? It's 2019, for god's sake. Kink shaming is overrated now. But none of her neighbors would ever make a comment, at least to her, asking what she has been up to. The anger that follows any such personal questions is infamous. Everyone was able to learn from the mistakes of the first idiot to do so.

➙ Sure, Kyla found scholarships for her undergrad and her parents did have a small savings account for her, but "𝒻𝓊𝓁𝓁-𝓇𝒾𝒹𝑒" was far from her vocabulary. And American education is STUPID expensive! Grad school isn't helping, but it's her dream, so?!?! Drowning in student loans, it is.

➙ Kyla tries to be super practical with money. She almost exclusively buys second-hand and has really, really been trying to up her home-cooking game. But, I mean, everyone deserves that avo toast every once in a while. And, god, would she sell her soul for the aesthetic? It's, uh, possible. She might not be the best at actually being practical, which has left her with more 𝓇𝒶𝓂𝑒𝓃 - 𝒻𝑜𝓇 - 𝒷𝓇𝑒𝒶𝓀𝒻𝒶𝓈𝓉 - 𝓁𝓊𝓃𝒸𝒽 - 𝒶𝓃𝒹 - 𝒹𝒾𝓃𝓃𝑒𝓇 days than she would like to admit. Maybe it's best not to sign those joint bank accounts just yet, sweetie.

➙ She would consider herself a native speaker of Italian and English, fluent in French, and a bit conversational in Spanish and Portuguese because of the similarities of romantic languages. Having lived in the US for long enough, most of Kyla's communication is in English. But she and her siblings almost always call each other in Italian. One, because they like to talk shit about people around them unknowingly, but two, it's the language they most associate with the happiness and carefree ways of their childhoods. Most of Kyla's deep emotions only make sense to her when she thinks in Italian. She is fluent in French, having lived there for five years, but her accent is quite terrible. In English, she speaks in a sort of silly concoction. By now, most of her vocabulary and slang is American, but there is a . . . something about the way she speaks. It's a mix of British and Italian that does not quite make sense but is so quintessentially Kyla.

➙ She often thinks her path of art restoration can translate into fixing things around the apartment. Sure, there is no paint peeling from the walls in 202, but dear god, the number of times her spouse has had to wrestle a wrench out of her hands while a "DIY House Fix" YouTube video plays in the background . . . { 𝓀𝒾𝓃𝓀𝓎 ? }

➙ One of the hardest parts of her financial situation is being unable to visit her family. She knows that she could ask her parents to chip in for flights and they would. They would love to see her too, and they're not cruel with their finances by any means. But, please, Kyla has way too much pride in being independent to ever do that. She will make it across the Atlantic on her own dime.

➙ Kyla knows she shouldn't smoke cigarettes, but growing up where the culture around it is so different, she does allow herself the occasional guilty pleasure.

➙ Her favorite food { 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝑜𝓃𝑒 𝓈𝒽𝑒 𝒾𝓈 𝒷𝑒𝓈𝓉 𝒶𝓉 𝒸𝑜𝑜𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 } is blueberry pancakes. When she and her spouse fight, Kyla always apologizes by sneaking out of bed early and making blueberry pancakes.

➙ She is one of those people that does not have a prescription but will sometimes wear glasses as an accessory because she thinks it fits her academic vibe l o l.

➙ After graduating from undergrad, Kyla’s parents gave them a honeymoon as a combined matriculation and wedding present. It was an absolutely massive gift that Kyla actually tried to talk them out of for a moment. How could she ever deserve something like that? But they had seen how hard she had worked to build her life in America. She never asked for help. She poured her heart into her work, and she clearly found a wonderful person worth spending the rest of her life with. They insisted, and that was that.

➙ For a week each, Kyla was able to take Ali around to both of her homes, in Paris and Milan, as well as a third week for relaxation and new places for them both of them in Crete. They wanted a magical place full of museums, architecture, and beaches. Greece was the perfect place to end their trip.

➙ It truly was the most blissful and perfect honeymoon Kyla could have ever dreamed of. Sharing her homes with Ali meant so much; it felt like exposing her heart and soul to her in its entirety. Even if she got rich and paid her parents back for it, that would never change how truly priceless this experience was to the young couple.

➙ Whenever they are asked about their honeymoon, they actually struggle to talk about it. How do you put something so inexplicably wonderful into words? Not to mention all the, erm, 𝒾𝓃𝓉𝒾𝓂𝒶𝓉𝑒 details that they keep private.

➙ The only problem? It was the first and last real vacation they’ll probably be having for, like, a long time. It weighs heavy on Kyla's heart that it might be years until she can afford to be home again, let alone for that long a time. She is glad to live in America, but especially as she struggles in New York, it gets easier and easier to romanticize her European life.

➙ Two hot, creative ladies married to each other? They absolutely take amazing photos of each other, both NSFW and otherwise. You could only dream that your Instagram husband was capable of what these two do for each other. Ali is more protective of the more risqué pictures because she’s trying to maintain a squeaky clean social media presence. Except for Snapchat, which tends to be a shrine to everything she can’t post elsewhere. Kyla doesn't necessarily post the sexy ones either; she just loves having them. And their apartment is lovingly filled with their artistic ventures. Kyla also uses a plethora of Italian names for her wife — polpetta { 𝓁𝒾𝓉𝑒𝓇𝒶𝓁𝓁𝓎 𝓂𝑒𝒶𝓉𝒷𝒶𝓁𝓁, 𝒷𝓊𝓉 𝓈𝒽𝑒 𝓈𝓌𝑒𝒶𝓇𝓈 𝒾𝓉’𝓈 𝒸𝓊𝓉𝑒 }, tesoro, cuore mio, amore, etc. And, yes, they say these shamelessly in public.

➙ They take their snap streak way more seriously than any non-Gen Z person should.

➙ The first time Ali brought home boxed wine, Kyla cried. She has now accepted it as part of their lifestyle, but she will never love it.

➙ Kyla’s family was always unconventional given everything about their literal existence as a family; they never had a problem when she came out as bi as a teen. But Ky knows “𝒶𝒹𝑜𝓅𝓉𝑒𝒹, 𝒶𝓉𝒽𝑒𝒾𝓈𝓉-𝓇𝒶𝒾𝓈𝑒𝒹 𝑔𝒶𝓎 𝒻𝓇𝑜𝓂 𝐸𝓊𝓇𝑜𝓅𝑒” is the last thing the Moss family wanted for their daughter. Ali’s siblings? Great! Anytime! Mom and dad? Only on Sunday phone calls, please. And even then . . . really pushing it sometimes.

➙ Ali absolutely adores the Veloso family. Whenever they meet up, or when Kyla talks to them over the phone / Skype / etc., she loves dropping in to say hi to them, or just listen to stories from their lives. She thinks Kyla’s parents are the coolest people in the world, and doesn’t know if she’ll ever repay them for the honeymoon they were given. Sometimes, she worries that she stole Kyla away from them.

➙ Sure, Kyla is the queen of acting like she has no feelings, but when it comes to communicating with people she cares about, she could confront problems all day every day. Honesty is the name of the game. It drives her crazy when Ali just mopes about, clearly upset over something but too good at avoidance to just tell Kyla what she did wrong. She has been known to sit in front of the apartment door more than once and exclaim that she won’t budge, no matter how late Ali is going to be, until she has honestly expressed what is going on!

➙ They treat Halloween like an Olympic sport, and they WILL be winning gold every year.

➙ Almost everyone Kyla knows, with the exception of a very very few, was either, one, a friend of Ali’s that was brought into her life against her will, or two, someone Ky shit-talked to Ali, who then forced her to go make nice with them for karma’s sake or whatever.

➙ Kyla really tries to support Ali’s work, but she is terrible with kids. Every time she visits, she either accidentally drops an F-bomb in front of an impressionable seven-year-old or blunders in some other massive way.

➙ Kyla makes fun of emojis all the time and has never posted one on her social media, but if anyone were to glance at the conversation between them on their phones, 𝑔𝒶𝓈𝓅, Ali has swayed Kyla into using them all of the time. She was so passive-aggressive about how “𝑒𝓂𝑜𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃𝓁𝑒𝓈𝓈” and “𝓊𝓃𝓁𝑜𝓋𝒾𝓃𝑔” her messages were during their long-distance summers in college that Kyla decided to cave eventually. But ONLY for Ali.

➙ Ali is absolutely the type to leave passive aggressive notes around the apartment for Kyla to find later. Kyla has probably hidden or thrown out her post-it stash in retaliation.
