The year is 1895. Queen Victoria sits gracefully atop her golden, clockwork throne. It is a time of exploration and innovation, as steam-powered engines take to the sky and mechanical butterflies dance gracefully through the air. But it is still a time steeped in deep tradition, and none bear the weight of social convention quite like the young debutantes about to make their entrances into society. The world is watching their every move, just waiting for them to make a mistake. A single crack in the delicate porcelain that is their image could ruin everything.

Eugenia Spence founded her academy for young ladies on the principles of propriety and dignity. It would help form girls into the perfect mold of mother, wife, and host. For decades, it has done just that. Among its great halls, lessons on all proper matters are instructed. Girls are kept in line and never dream of breaking the rules. Christian duties are carefully maintained. Elegance is of the utmost importance.

All women of Spence have joined and maintained Londonโ€™s elite high society in some way or another. There has been no black sheep or disappointment among them, as far as the graduates are concerned. The current budding debutantes are no different than those that have come before them. They have the fine graces, airs, and, of course, finances that have grounded this fine institution with such a resounding reputation.

The Spence Academy for Young Ladies is not for everyone. Only the best are welcome. Only the best make it through to the end. After all, in the unpredictable, ruthless world that is Londonโ€™s elite, only the best can survive.

Over twenty years ago, a terrible fire nearly destroyed the entire academy. While Spence has recovered from the incident with its reputation, it has not been able to leave this event entirely behind. The prestigious building is still in a state of disrepair. While the exterior and minor parts of the interior have been fixed to deter any questions, the girls secretly spend most of their education in a flying dirigible.

But the lie does not stop there. The reasons behind that fire are far more sinister than any newspaper could have fathomed, for magic flows through the veins of Spenceโ€™s finest. The Headmistress herself has no idea the true purpose of Spence: to teach girls the finest of poise, poison, magic, and assassination. The accident was actually from a spell gone horribly wrong. However, not every student is allowed in on the schoolโ€™s intention. It becomes part of the girlsโ€™ training to keep their more controversial studies from other students and staff members. But being recruited is still no guarantee; some are ultimately rejected by the magic itself and have to have their memories wiped.

And the question still remains: whose bidding will they be serving with all these vials tucked in gloves and swords disguised as parasols? These particular students may have options that are not present for regular Victorian girls, but there are still those trying to control their every move. Who can they trust? What will they make of all such skills? They may want to take fate into their own hands, but the chaos of this steampunk world has other ideas.

In a very basic summation, this roleplay is about ten young girls who attend Spenceโ€™s Academy for Young Ladies. What differentiates them from their peers, however, is that all of them have been chosen to participate in the schoolโ€™s secret purpose: training to be assassins. Instead of being set in traditional Victorian England, there are two twists: magic is real AND the world is steampunk. Too much for a roleplay, right? Well. I know. And yet Iโ€™m doing it anyway. I feel bad that Iโ€™m writing a lot, but . . . I canโ€™t help it because magic is just too fun to play with, and I am a sucker for ladies who hate the shackles of their society and fight them in the most badass and unique ways.

    There are going to be a few main elements to understand. There are some basic aspects of time period, as well as the school itself, which is complicated and full of mysteries. There is an organization called The Order, which is a group of women who are the sole humans capable of wielding magic. Then there is the Rakshana, which is an ancient group of protectors for The Order who have basically morphed into a group that controls them. { Men, am I right? }

In the Libba Bray books, the magic is accessed in a secondary dimension called The Realms. In this roleplay, I decided to make this more of a level of consciousness than a physical entity. This may all seem a bit overwhelming, and I do admit that it is a lot. However, I discuss my lenience and thoughts on how we can make this work together in the next section. So just think of this as something fun to give a bit of backstory to the wonderful character youโ€™re going to bring to life! Although this group is heavily influenced by two book series, it is still entirely separate from them, so Iโ€™m all down for rule-bending and making up our own shenanigans!

The Victorian era was a period of dramatic change that brought England to its highest point of development as a world power. The early Victorian period { 1830 - 48 } saw the opening of Britainโ€™s first railway and its first Reform Parliament, but it was also a time of economic distress. Although the mid-Victorian period { 1848 - 70 } was not free of harassing problems, it was a time of prosperity, optimism, and stability. In the later period { 1870 - 1901 } the costs of Empire became increasingly apparent, and England was confronted with growing threats to its military and economic preeminence. The extreme inequalities between men and women stimulated a debate about womenโ€™s roles known as โ€œThe Woman Question.โ€

Politics were important to the Victorians; they believed in the perfection of their evolved representative government, and in exporting it throughout the British Empire. This age saw the birth and spread of political movements, most notably socialism, liberalism and organised feminism. British Victorians were excited by geographical exploration, by the opening up of Africa and Asia to the West, yet were troubled by the intractable Irish situation and humiliated by the failures of the Boer War. At sea, British supremacy remained largely unchallenged throughout the century.

During the Victorian heyday, work and play expanded dramatically. The national railway network stimulated travel and leisure opportunities for all, so that by the 1870s, visits to seaside resorts, race meetings and football matches could be enjoyed by many of this now largely urban society. Increasing literacy stimulated growth in popular journalism and the ascendancy of the novel as the most powerful popular icon.

The progress of scientific thought led to significant changes in medicine during the nineteenth century, with increased specialisation and developments in surgery and hospital building. There were notable medical breakthroughs in anaesthetics โ” famously publicised by Queen Victoria taking chloroform for the birth of her son in 1853 โ” and in antiseptics, pioneered by Joseph Lister { 1827 - 1912 }. The public's faith in institutions was evident not only in the growth of hospitals but was also seen in the erection of specialised workhouses and asylums for the most vulnerable members of society.

Steampunk straddles some of the dividing lines between fantasy and science fiction as it looks to the re-imagined past with nostalgia. While no specific elements of steampunk are absolutely essential, there is a generally understood group of features, at least some of which should be included for a work to be recognized as steampunk:
โ”โ” A story set within a world using a real or imagined version of the technology of the 19th century
โ”โ” Technology and devices driven by steam power or counterweighted clockwork
โ”โ” Victorian-era class and economic structures
โ”โ” Implicit or explicit social critique
    โ”โ” An adventure-oriented plotline
โ”โ” An emphasis on the empowerment of individuals in the face of industrial standardization and the advance of modern bureaucratic government

I think, in general, the internet and aesthetic websites have given us all a brief familiarity with the steampunk aesthetic. I do not think this roleplay has to aim for scientific accuracies. I mean, there's a reason we don't power everything with steam. Steampunk is already a bit of an alternative assumption all on its own. Maybe this is an incorrect assumption of mine, but I am guessing that our best bet for consistency will be to use the technology of Gail Carriger's world as a base for everything, that we can then jump off from and create our own ideas from as it becomes necessary. The technology wiki can be found here. You don't need to go and read every single article. I just want you to have that as a reference for when / if you might need it. I'm not going to obsess over accuracy, and we should all feel free to use the group chat or forum to discuss what we think would be accurate or not together! This will be collaborative, so all ideas are welcome.
