FAQs about Star Beam during interviews
-
I know interview questions can be very repetitive AF so I have to summarize it in one blog post
1. Star Beam's origins as independent trainees to one of the most popular K-pop Girl Groups today & most importantly, MBF's Pride
- They are one of the most successful examples of "independent trainees" where they aren't signed in a company but instead they trained in a music academy & studying in art high schools while they live their normal lives.
- They all trained for 2-5 years every summer (Hyo trained the longest while Sae trained for 2 years) but they started to have full blown group preparations in late 2015-entire 2016.
- Their company is the offshoot of their music academy. When their CEO (who has a dream of having her own record label & was a musician in bars when she was in Star Beam's age then she moved on to be a vocal teacher & runs a music academy with some of her friends) was gifted a record label in the box by her friends, she thought that it was a prank but once she discovers this package, she decided to pick the most competent students for their first idol group.
- This happens that Star Beam members we all know & we love are the best trainees of the summer workshop.
- The reason why they hold workshop every summer because they want their trainees to enjoy their normal adolescent years.
2. The soon to be Star Beam members used to be scouted or audition in different companies but they failed to make it & instead stick with their current company
-
Ryuna - trained in JYP entertainment as an actress but left before the events of Sixteen thanks to her personal problems. She went to MBF for vocal & dance lessons just to be more confident with herself (she used to be a shy girl with two left feet)
-
Chaehee - auditioned in Woollim Entertainment but rejected
-
Chloe - an independent trainee during her high school years who tries to find a band/dance group around Seoul but rejected her for her looks (she's a biracial Korean-American BTW)
-
Hyoshin - auditioned in Woollim Entertainment but rejected
-
Jeonah - scouted by YG Entertainment while busking with Chaehee but declined
-
Saeyoon - an independent trainee who tried to find a label to release her songwriting works (majority of Star Beam songs are written by Saeyoon)
-
Yujia - scouted by SM Entertainment but declined thanks to the warning of her trainers & her unnies
3. Star Beam is more than just bunch of pretty girls
- They are called "pretty hungry" idols not only for their big appetite but for food but also for learning (whether academics or music)
- Since debut they contributed in song writing, choreography making, and also creating visuals (Is this girl boss mentality?)
- 96 Liners can play instruments (Chae - drums, Chloe - piano, Hyo - guitar, Jeon - bass) while Ryuna does DJ-ing
- All members contributed in song writing especially in S/S 2019 album (most credits goes to Ryuna, Hyoshin, Jeonah & Saeyoon if you count their works since debut)
- During their trainee years, they would move their furniture of their dorm to practice if the dance studio won't accommodate them. That's why they work so hard to have their building of their own (which fortunately, they bought a building during Starry Moment era)
- Thanks to the girls' determination & hard work, they get the fruits of their labor little by little
4. Their friendship with NCT
- When a Big 3 boy group meets a non-Big 3 girl group? Interesting
- The two groups promote almost at the same time that's why they got close
- Aside from meeting each other in different events, they also hang out as friends (either eat or drink together, play bowling, or sometimes NCT 127 will visit Star Beam in the MBF building)
- Jaehyun starred in "I Am" of Star Beam while Yujia was in "Highway to Heaven" (English version) of NCT 127
- They are being hated for working together (these people stay unbothered)
- Yujia & Johnny MC-ed together in Music Bank (plus they have mutual crush with each other)
- NCT Dream thinks that Star Beam is their noonas from another company
- In spite of their age difference, Star Beam used to formally addressed NCT Dream as "sunbaenim" but time goes by, NCT Dream dropped the sunbae-hoobae formalities by calling Star Beam 'noona'
- NCT Dream & Star Beam collaborated for "Dream Concert" alongside Golden Child performing "Shy Boy" by Secret
- Yujia already worked with WayV for a CF
- NCT 127's advice to Star Beam about touring: "Just Have Fun"
5. Star Beam's advantages
- They are all arounders (they can sing, dance & rap) plus they can write songs
- They can make fairy tale concepts more bearable & classy not cheesy as time goes by ("Mermaid Princess" was based on well, "Little Mermaid" while "I Am" is based on "Swan Lake")
- They are more experienced with busking & self promotions
- They can dance in roller skates just like how most girl groups (including themselves) handle high heels
- They are honest but careful with words
- They can interact with every group without being subject to malicious rumors
6. How do Star Beam create their songs?
- Inspiration can spark at anytime that's why Saeyoon is always seen with a notebook (For the record, Sae have 5 notebooks for the entire career)
- Sometimes, the members will write down on the notebook & the 96 liners (& Ryuna) will try to compose melodies (sometimes, Ryuna out there trying to create beats at the dorm)
- When the lyrics is finished, they will show it to the company staff (also the CEO will create comments about their lyrics. If there's something to change, they will change immediately according to those comments)
- Before the recording session, they will perform the demo first (the line distribution is yet to be decided here)
- They usually record songs 3 months before their actual comeback (Same time as ChaeJia will try to contribute in the choreography)
- Their line distribution is more on the fairer side (even rapper line can sing)
7. How they deal with arguments?
- One rule: Don't air your dirty laundry in SNS but instead, talk among themselves privately (they do this for years)
8. How do they deal with haters?
- Yujia is the most hated Star Beam member (in real life she is the sweetest member) but she just thanked the haters in her IG post after the release of "Highway to Heaven" MV
- For the rest of the unnies tho, they just ignore & focus on working their improvements
9. Career Role Models (since of some of y'all observed this)
