Once her friends started drinking, her name had a habit of dropping that last syllable. ๐‘ต๐’๐’๐’๐’๐’๐’—๐’† became all too easy to slur out after midnight. Being the elder sister, it was also Nova who often got stuck with the little jokes about their last name. One of those "too cool to not say once" things, she supposes? She loved it too, so when it became her instagram handle, it latched on even more. Additionally, Nova has a slew of names completely unrelated to her because, oops, she loves to play a good "catfish." Her Tinder has never been her real name, and half of the time she's out at a bar, she is forcing someone { you guessed it, her sister } to forge a new secret identity with her. Outside of the Netherlands, her name is not very common. It is always getting mistaken for ๐‘ต๐’๐’‚๐’‰, especially at Starbucks. Out of necessity, she learned to respond to that too.

She never really came out to anyone; she just operated under the assumption that she was gay and people would figure it out for themselves or not. At twelve years old, her mother hearing, "I have a crush on a girl in my class," did surprise her for a moment, but the entire family was generally very accepting and understanding. No one questioned her. In fact, all of the doubt came from inside Nova. She wasn't sure what she wanted. It wasn't until she went to college that she, quite ironically, had her "straight stage." In fact, kissing boys has brought her more confusion and shock from others than kissing girls ever did. Now they ask things, "So, like, what is your sexuality? Was being gay really just a phase for you?" And she hates all of it. Little No just wants to be left alone, loving who she loves. { Well, getting on with who she gets on with, considering she has never been in love. } All the terms do a lot in the way of confusing her, so she doesn't label how she feels. Nova is going to enjoy herself, and no one should care what sort of gender or expression is involved. Is that too much to ask? Apparently, yes.

    ๐‘ถ๐’—๐’†๐’“๐’‚๐’๐’ โ€ขโ€ข Nova is . . . a lot. Most people say that she a whole hell of a lot of fun, which is true. Until she lets things get out of hand, which also happens often. Although she is incredibly loyal to her little sister, it is like all of her commitment starts and ends there. She cannot handle being tied down by anything. Sometimes even making plans two weeks out makes her stressed. Nova also lies to herself all the time. She can justify anything in that crazy little brain of hers. And she is always, always getting bored of her life. She cannot admit it is her own fault. Her inability to be genuine and work hard is unfulfilling, but she doesn't see that yet. Instead, she is just like one of her nicknames: a little bunny, always bouncing on to something new. While it is true that the best of adventures can be had with the incredibly spontaneous de Haas girls, it can also be way, way too much to keep up with. No especially struggles with recognizing her own mean streak, which can rear its ugly head when provoked. Although she is a very giving, loving, and charitable girl overall, a lot of the emotions and issues that she fails to confront mean that Nova can occasionally boil over and explode. The worst part is, you can almost never see it coming. Even though Nova abandons things, places, and people all of the time, she has a horrible double-standard of being jealous and terrified of abandonment. Maybe that is part of why she always leaves first. Being around Nova can be almost like an addiction. For a while, she makes your life exciting. She makes you feel like the center of her world. { Or at least, near-center, since her sister will always have that spot. } But there is a reason rollercoasters only last a little while; that crazy ride isn't fun when you can't get off. Nova doesn't mean to hurt anyone, but her ship of wild, reckless youth is sinking. Very real consequences are going to hit her soon. It's only a matter of time before she accidentally pulls someone down with her, under the guise of trying to learn to swim.

    ๐“ซ๐“ฒ๐“ธ๐“ฐ๐“ป๐“ช๐“น๐“ฑ๐”‚

    โ €โ €โ € โ €Nova does not have a single memory from before her little sister, Cosmo Sofija, was born, and she would never want to change it. They grew up in the modern labyrinth of Rotterdam to a Dutch father and Serbian mother. Although they have only ever lived in the Netherlands, visiting their mother's country every year did offer a very real sense of home and familiarity, of which Nova is especially grateful for.

    โ €โ €โ € โ €She was five when her parents sat the sisters down and explained that mama would be moving into her own house a few kilometers away. The girls would live in both places, like some kind of adventure. They painted it so nicely, but Nova was just old enough for the memory to sting. The words she later learned from her mother and aunt's tipsy conversation popped the bubble of her perfect world: ๐’น๐’พ๐“‹๐‘œ๐“‡๐’ธ๐‘’. ๐’ข๐‘œ๐‘œ๐’น ๐“‡๐’พ๐’น๐’น๐’ถ๐“ƒ๐’ธ๐‘’. ๐’ฒ๐’ถ๐’พ๐“‰, ๐’ฉ๐‘œ๐“‹๐’ถ, ๐ผ ๐’น๐’พ๐’น๐“ƒ'๐“‰ ๐“ˆ๐‘’๐‘’ ๐“Ž๐‘œ๐“Š ๐“‰๐’ฝ๐‘’๐“‡๐‘’. ๐’ด๐‘œ๐“Š ๐“Œ๐‘’๐“‡๐‘’๐“ƒ'๐“‰ ๐“ˆ๐“Š๐“…๐“…๐‘œ๐“ˆ๐‘’๐’น ๐“‰๐‘œ ๐’ฝ๐‘’๐’ถ๐“‡ ๐“‰๐’ฝ๐’ถ๐“‰. ๐ผ๐“‰ ๐“Œ๐’ถ๐“ˆ โ” ๐ผ'๐“‚ ๐“ˆ๐‘œ๐“‡๐“‡๐“Ž, ๐’ท๐“Š๐“ƒ๐“ƒ๐“Ž.

    โ €โ €โ € โ €The next week, as her mother was packing to go, their parents fought again. There was Nova, sneaky as always, listening nearby undetected. She had already heard her parents fight plenty of times, but that one would haunt No for her entire life. Just a snippet in a heated moment, "๐ผ ๐“ƒ๐‘’๐“‹๐‘’๐“‡ ๐“Œ๐’ถ๐“ƒ๐“‰๐‘’๐’น ๐“€๐’พ๐’น๐“ˆ. ๐ผ ๐‘œ๐“ƒ๐“๐“Ž ๐’น๐’พ๐’น ๐“‰๐’ฝ๐’พ๐“ˆ ๐“‰๐‘œ ๐“‚๐’ถ๐“€๐‘’ ๐“Ž๐‘œ๐“Š ๐’ฝ๐’ถ๐“…๐“…๐“Ž. ๐ผ ๐“ƒ๐‘’๐“‹๐‘’๐“‡ ๐“Œ๐’ถ๐“ƒ๐“‰๐‘’๐’น ๐“‰๐‘œ ๐’ท๐‘’ ๐’ถ ๐“‚๐‘œ๐“‰๐’ฝ๐‘’๐“‡." But she can still picture it like it was yesterday. Sure, things are different now. Her mother was present and caring enough in the rest of their childhood. But those words deeply affected Nova. Rather than share the echos of that sadness, she channeled it into always trying to make her little sister feel wanted and loved and cherished. Nova is not a guardian over Cosmo in the sense of wanting her to follow rules and be sheltered. Screw that. No is still a terrible influence. But she is incredibly protective over her heart and her well-being. She puts the older brother stereotype to shame; no one can protect you like Nova can. Of course, their relationship has some downsides. They have a very typical sibling relationship, where they can be best friends and worst enemies all at once. Don't ever try to get in between them, though. They would never actually hurt or betray each other.

    โ €โ €โ € โ €After the divorce, Cos and Nova's childhoods were fairly normal and quiet. She rode her bike to school, tried and failed to play the violin, joined a football team and quit after three months because she hated losing too much. Normal kid stuff. When she was twelve, she tested for her level of high school like all Dutch children, although she planned to deliberately sabotage herself. Nova didn't believe that she could handle to be on track to go to university. When her teacher sat her down and said that he could tell she wasn't trying her best and that he was worried about her, she wanted to die inside. Of course, it was true. What could she say? Too scared to let him down, she ended up getting a score that placed her in one of the highest levels. She could have taken the track that also offered Greek and Latin classes, but Nova knew that she would rather stab herself with a dull fork than sit through those. However, as quite a surprise to her parents, she decided to take high school in English. They didn't know she often snuck on her computer to watch American YouTubers all night long. She liked their slang and the thrill of being one of the best in her English classes. But it didn't last. It never does with Nova.

    โ €โ €โ € โ €After all, she is always in denial about something. Her new adventure that she went on in the spur of the moment? Probably a tactic to avoid a certain responsibility. Her inability to commit to any relationship? A symptom of the greater problem where she cannot be vulnerable in any way. Nova likes to say that she is just fun and spontaneous, but a lot of her impatience is from her immaturity and lack of authenticity. She is always lying to herself. She never wants to be alone for long, either, because then she might be forced to confront some of her demons. And if she can't be in charge, she struggles to participate at all. No matter the situation, however, she will find a way to bring about mass shenanigans.

    โ €โ €โ € โ €Literally the year that Nova turned sixteen, the Netherlands changed the drinking age up to eighteen. She and all of her friends were so annoyed; however, that did little in the way of stopping them. She has a tendency to be involved in dramatics, so perhaps it is a shame she never joined any kind of theater activity. And her tendency to bounce-off-the-walls and run away isn't the best combination of crafting long-term friendships. She tends to float around between all kinds of groups and people without truly forming a tight, unbreakable bond with any of them. The same sort of tendency followed her to university, which she only regretfully attended to keep her mom happy. { And also because she realized finding a job is terrifying. Growing up, in general, is terrifying. }

    โ €โ €โ € โ €Supernova. It's only right; her explosion was inevitable. Going to uni to please someone else is a recipe for disaster. She cut a lot of class, partied more than is healthy, and had a habit of letting her friends down again. And again. And again. They once held an intervention, but that massively failed. Seeing people genuinely care about her well-being didn't help her see the light; it made her snap even more. So she did what she does best: whisper sweet nothings in Cosmo's ear and convince her that they need a ๐’ท๐“‡๐’ถ๐“ƒ๐’น ๐“ƒ๐‘’๐“Œ ๐’ถ๐’น๐“‹๐‘’๐“ƒ๐“‰๐“Š๐“‡๐‘’ ๐“‰๐‘œ๐‘”๐‘’๐“‰๐’ฝ๐‘’๐“‡. Nova has always loved children; she practically is one. It was a perfect idea to get paid to hang out with some! And in Paris, of all places! Here she is, repeating the same pattern of abandoning her mistakes instead of dealing with the consequences . . . but they are bound to catch up to her eventually. Is she even capable of being genuine? The jury is still out.

    โ €โ €โ € โ €Yet there she goes again, laughing and smiling and bringing so much lovable chaos with her. Sheโ€™s intoxicating. You want to lose all your worries along side her, and youโ€™ve never had an adventure more grand than when she is involved. Why be grounded when you can use ๐’ป๐“Š๐“ƒ to distract from how meaningless your life really is? Silly, silly Nova.

    โ‡ข Nova and Cosmo talk Serbian when they want to talk shit or just generally don't want anyone around to understand what they're saying. They don't do this, of course, when they are in Serbia, but that means they can normally do the same in Dutch. It's mostly effective, except for when someone nearby also accidentally knows one of the languages. { Which has happened, like, only a handful of times? Not bad? They aren't going to stop, so? } In general, Serbian lends itself to more to expressing themselves emphatically. And it has infinitely more fun curse words. For Nova personally, most of her emotions translate to her best when in Serbian. It is the language she most often dreams in.

    โ‡ข She is insanely into crafts and gives really random, elaborate gifts to people for no reason at all.

    โ‡ข She is secretly a little insecure that her little sister has substantially more social media followers, but she shakes it off with a typical, "Like, whatever." { She watches a lot of American YouTubers. } It is also certainly her own fault because she will post every day for two weeks straight then not at all for four months?? Is there anything consistent with this girl????

    โ‡ข Not that she is public about it with anything, including Cos because she gets so frustrated with Nova, but she has the most insane coping mechanisms on the planet. She can be in denial about anything and totally believes the lies she tells herself. For example, Nova literally flunked her uni English class because she didn't understand one assignment, was too ashamed to ask for help, didn't turn the assignment in, was then so ashamed about not turning it in that she stopped showing up, and then she failed the class entirely. SHE IS CRAZY ABOUT AVOIDANCE AND CAN JUSTIFY ANYTHING TO HERSELF. It's maddening.

    โ‡ข When she was fourteen, Nova had her "big dyke energy" phase, as she lovingly calls it. Although she knew she liked girls, there weren't any feminine gay figures in the media she knew or of the people in her life. She felt like she wasn't truly accepted as anything or being true to her sexuality unless she dressed a certain way. She desperately wanted to feel a part of the community, but it didn't last long. She realized that she can be herself in any way she wants, wearing and doing whatever she wants, and that doesn't make her any less valid in the queer community. Now she feels much more confident in being true to her self-expression.

    โ‡ข Nova never thinks before she acts. Kind of an adrenaline junkie. She basically exhausted her parents, who give in to almost anything at this point without asking questions because they gave up looonnnngggg ago.

    โ‡ข She has asthma which can REALLY get in the way of some of her more outlandish stunts and she is the worst at remembering an inhaler, but it's gotten less severe as she's gotten older. { To clarify, the asthma has become less severe, not the shenanigans. }

    โ‡ข Although Nova is a dog person and doesn't really like cats, her personality is very feline { "I get to give you attention on my terms and you're going to like it" type thing }.

    โ‡ข The only reason she continued French in high school was because hot girls took French. Does she regret it? No. Is she proud of it? Yeah. She will always follow that trail wherever it leads her. But she stuck around because Nova accidentally liked it a lot more than she had planned.

    โ‡ข No is grateful for all the languages she speaks because it makes it easier to travel, but more importantly, to her dramatic mind, they help her take on even more fake personas. For a complete list, her native languages are Serbian and Dutch because they were both spoken interchangeably at home, even when her parents divorced. Her English is fluent because she started it in school young, chose to have her high school in English, and she just has mass media consumption in English generally. Like most Dutch students, she took German and French in school to awhile. Her French is infinitely better since she continued into high school. She can almost always get by in French, and it's getting better now that she lives in Paris. For no reason other than on a whim, Nova started Russian just for a little bit in college. Her German and Russian is . . . conversational? That's probably too generous. But she is better at pretending that she can speak them for her little games, which counts for something. Maybe.

It's embarrassing. Don't ask. Her feed is incredibly curated; how could it not be, with a photogenic af sister and the crazy number of photos the two take together? All the same, Nova has the weirdest activity stats. Sometimes she won't post for months on end; sometimes she posts every day. It is erratic and a touch obnoxious. But don't you worry your pretty little head. No matter how often she is posting, Nova is ALWAYS commenting. She loves, loves, loves leaving comments with obnoxious emoji strings on anyone that is even sort of her friend. Life is too short to not spread such silly love, right?
    ๐‘ป๐’˜๐’Š๐’•๐’•๐’†๐’“ โ€ขโ€ข @ nobunny | Nova keeps deleting the Twitter app off her phone. She is so easily addicted to it. She swipes right on nearly everyone when she is bored and sends truly obnoxious messages, most of which have been curated in a group chat with her college friends. They sometimes have a competition to see who can send the most insane things without getting called out for lying. So far, Nova always wins.

    โ” I realized that when I plot love interests, I have a bad habit of getting so carried away in loving their love that I fail to be realistic about breakups and arguments and the like. No isn't going to be having any committed relationships, but I'm sure she might burn some bridges by hooking up with someone and either expecting it to be a one-night-stand and ghosting them, wanting to be their friend and thus pretending it never happened, and all kinds of other dysfunction. She doesn't sleep around that often, per se, but she does love a good club make-out and might do it sometimes.

    โ” I stan a good enemy plot. I can see something VERY passive aggressive. Like a competition to be better at taking care of kids, wear cuter outfits, have more likes on the gram, etc. Nova is CHILDISH, WHAT THE FUCK.

    โ” Someone who she just straight up doesn't trust because they don't absolutely swoon over how Cosmo is the best in the whole world. Sure, Nova is maybe bias here, but LOOK AT HER! AN ANGEL!

    โ” Someone who is equally a bad influence and gets into lots of trouble with partying and the like. Nova grew up close to Amsterdam. She knows her way around a night-out. Be careful around her haha.

    โ” I feel like Nova is sort of well-traveled, and the surprise here is that she often traveled alone in uni. And you're thinking, "But Raegen, you wrote in her audition that she hates being alone?" EXACTLY! Nova stays in hostels and always, always makes new friends. A relationship where you just have fun together for a few days and don't have to do anything deep or meaningful? And she can run away after without any consequence? IT IS HER DREAM. So they could have met on a vacation beforehand, although Nova has never been to the Americas, Asia, or Australia. And the only country in Africa she went to is Egypt.

    โ” I plan for Nova to join a theater group as like a hobby and kind of fall in love with singing. She might even try to start a band??? So?????? I don't know where to go with that, but if you have any connection ideas, feel free to hit me up haha.

    โ” Playground buddies!!!!! Nova is going to hate her little demon babies and will take them to a park as much as possible so she can just watch them from a distance and not have to interact with them always. So yeah, anyone else that frequents there and sits with her on a bench for gossip and coffee.

    โ” Someone who sees right through Nova's bullshit and thinks she is the worst. And no, they don't want to be her friend. She is not going to be dragging them down.

    โ” On the flip side, someone who loves how spontaneous and fun Nova is, and Nova gets a little carried away with stringing them along her wild ride.

    โ” Maybe someone also takes pity on how destructive she can be, and they try to help her grow up a little? I don't know? Kind of like a mom friend thing where Nova reminds them to let go and enjoy things more and they thump her in the head for being an absolute idiot sometimes { all of the time }.

    โ” Nova is going to be enrolled in a French class to improve her grammar! She is pretty good at French in general, so she could be someone's tutor. They might equally just be classmates!

    โ” There are plenty of things not here that I would be happy to plan as well. These are just some of the random things I thought of!
