d d d Isabella is intended as a direct foil to Mai, as they exist in the same world. Both are forced to confront the gender roles/stereotypes perpetuated by their respective kingdoms (Isabella and Evalusia's Catholicism/Mai and Liang's traditional expectations for women), but the way they react to the expectations imposed on them is real different, thanks to their respective circumstances. Isabella chafes under the conservatism of her father (who's like, a mean AF dictator-king rip) and wants nothing more than to either get the fuck out of Evalusia or somehow get rid of her father, while Mai doesn't particularly love the gender roles and whatnot but is willing to conform to them for the sake of Liang and/or maintaining a specific outward appearance.d d dAnother difference plays into the futures I have planned out for them. At the beginning of the RP, both are betrothed to a prince of a foreign kingdom, and while Mai's doing it in order to keep Liang securely in her uncle's hands, Izzy's doing it because 1. her father is making her, and 2. she hates being in Evalusia, basically lol. And while Mai is 100% going through with the marriage (even after she finds out that her betrothed arranged for her half-brother's disappearance #yikes?), Izzy's probably going to drop that shit REAL quick if she gets the chance. Which she does.
d d dI think my biggest motivation in Isabella's backstory was this realization that wow all my gal characters who want to rule are doing so via strategic marriages, so why not have a bitchy manipulative character who isn't afraid to just seize power for herself without dealing w/ the middleman? And that's exactly what I have planned for Izzy-she's going to end up leading the revolution that overthrows her father and puts her on the throne instead. #sorrynotsorry.
d d d I think the last thing to address in terms of Isabella/Mai being foil characters is how they view their outward appearances. Mai has no qualms against using her looks to manipulate others; she wears a face full of make-up and killer heels every damn day and is always perfectly polite and carefully controlled to fool people into thinking that she isn't dangerous. Isabella, on the other hand, is just as controlled as Mai is, but she isn't here to be eye candy-and she'll have you know that she is a threat, straight-up. She's pretty, yes, because Zhenya Katava is gorgeous and anyone who thinks otherwise can fight me 1v1, but she doesn't think whether or not she's pretty should factor into anything, so she doesn't act like it does. Partially because of her generally severe nature, and partially because of her upbringing (hint: it's very Catholic), Isabella's clothes usually are dark colors and very expensive and rather elegant but also simple and fairly conservative. Mai uses her looks to present a certain image, while Isabella doesn't give a single shit-she's confident in her own ability to convey whatever "image" she has to through her words/actions.

d d d These are the women who know how to play coy. These are the women who know how to flirt and bat their eyelashes for the sake of luring men into a trap. These are the women who know of their own beauty-and no man will ever be allowed to forget it, either. Especially not ones that they don't like.
๐๐ ๐ธโ๐ธ๐๐๐๐๐
d d d I'm usually not that big of a fan of creating straight-up femme fatales, because I'm not into the idea of using sexuality to manipulate (even though it's a totally valid and badass trope!) since I'm a literal 5 year old and still find thinking about anything other than making out kinda ewwww, but okay listen there was this one WW2 but with superpowers roleplay I found, so how could I resist? Maria's literally a stereotypical femme fatale, right down to her power. Self-indulgence is okay, guys.
d d d As for Rowena...you know, I'm not sure where she would fit, but I have her in femme fatale for now. She's definitely not the stereotypical definition of a femme fatale, but I think what ultimately made me put her in this category was the fact that she isn't above using her looks/flirting/being ~seductive~ to manipulate others and/or to get what she wants. She started out as a steampunk version of Mai NGL, but Mai is not really into the whole being coquettish/seductive/flirtatious in order to manipulate sort of thing while Rowena's got no problem with it. Plus, Rowena's a lot more brutal.

d d d These are the women who know their duty. These are the women who must be strong, who must defend and protect and fight for what they believe in. These are the women who, despite everything, are able to see both sides of the story. And these are the women who expect to give their lives for the cause they've always fought for, but may just end up surprising themselves, in the end.

d d d TBH I used to into this kind of trope thingy but nowadays not really. But I never really got a chance to write Vivian and I am SO down for dutiful-soldier-type-questioning-accepted-beliefs, ya feel? Like, I am always always always down for ~character development~ and having my characters realize that there's more than one side to any story...and honestly these gals are the perfect characters for that kind of storyline. aldfkjsdflkfa YES.
d d d I use the term "soldier" loosely, b/c some of them aren't really soldiers in the traditional sense of the word, but their personality fits very well with the whole duty-bound soldier trope. Also...do Mei and Vivian share the same FC? Yes. Do I...care? Nope!

d d d These are the girls who would be evil queens, if they were born in a different time and a different place. These are the girls who will run you down in their six-inch heels if you so much as look at them the wrong way. These are the girls who once knew of nothing except that they had to be perfect-and now that they've realized that maybe they don't have to hide, they have become quite...heartless ( literally , in some cases).
๐๐ ๐ธโ๐ธ๐๐๐๐๐
d d d Anj, Jenny, and Chae-they're the evil queens (and the princess she used to be) versions of high school (though in Chae's case, college) girls, basically. They really aren't very nice, when it comes down to it, though they're a lot more complex than most people would expect.
d d d I think the fundamental difference between Anj and Jenny is that Anjali actually cares about something other than herself, lol. Anjali's secretly a lame tree-hugger, plus she has actual friends, not just fake friends who want to be popular by being associated with her. Jenny, on the other hand, is probably a lot more shallow. She wants to make her mother proud (no matter how much she won't admit it to herself), but her mom is impossible to please and doesn't love her really, leading to some issues, none the least being her obsession with staying thin (her mom and sister are both supermodels, and Jenny desperately wants to follow in their footsteps) and her nonexistent home life.
d d d Anyway so Jenny gets Raised from the dead and it isn't even her parents who find a necromancer to do it, so she's kinda realizing how lonely she actually is, esp. because those fake friends aren't going to associate w/ her anymore since yikes!!! she's basically a walking corpse. Not entirely sure where I'm going with Jenny yet but I really like her a lot and she's probably one of the more complex characters I've come up with.
d d d As for Chae...she comes off as a heartless bitch (and I mean, she is quite literally heartless), but she'll rip you open if you hurt her friends. Lots of trust issues, lots of daddy issues, just wants her sister to come back. Refuses to let anyone else dictate her life for her, and she's real damn gutsy, when it comes down to it-I mean, the girl killed herself on purpose so she wouldn't have to marry some dumb asshole. Wants a normal family and a normal life more than anything. And god, she hates her dad. Chae's like a more sympathetic, magical, Asian, and fiercer version of Jenny. Whereas Jenny is this untouchable statue of ice, Chae is more like a prowling tigress-the queen, of course, but one who will tear you apart if you hurt her or her friends.

d d d These are the girls who know that the point of life is to be happy. These are the girls who wear high heels and make-up and paint their rooms pink without a single care for what others will think. These are the girls who will be there for you on a rainy day, who will bake cookies and watch cheesy rom-coms with you after a messy break-up, who can rattle off different brands of mascara as easily as they breathe. And these are the girls who, despite everything, are much smarter than they look.
๐๐ ๐ธโ๐ธ๐๐๐๐๐
d d d So I think that this trope/category is one of my favorites: I fucking love the idea of a super pink make-up whiz being actually really smart?? B/c fuck the idea that beauty and brains are mutually exclusive???? Also, I'm in love with bubbly tree-huggers, which is why 2 out of the 4 I'm about to list are very much environmentalists lmao. I'm super into the trope of girls whose sweet/talkative/outgoing natures usually makes people mistake them for being airheaded and/or ditzy, when in reality they're very good at at least one thing
