Packing less on vacation (post 1 of travel series)

  • Welcome to my travel series.
This post is all about saving room in a suitcase. Read on to get tips.

    1-Wear large items-

The big items such as sun ats and jackets take up tones of room in a bag. Wear these items. Sunhats can be squashed packed. Plus you are going to need your hat when you arrive in the hot destination.

2- Roll your clothes not fold-
(learn more about the difference here: https://tocodesport.com/blogs/news/folding-vs-rolling-clothes-for-packing-which-is-better )
    ![alt text](0_1559652199533_8fe63a68-a1eb-42d8-a102-37bf8822b821-image.png image url)
Folding clothes leads to creases. You can bunch up more clothing into a suitcase by rolling. This packing method leaves you room above your clothing for things like a book or map. Also its easier to locate items rather than sifting through layers of clothes. Each item is layed next to each other.

    3-use handbag for extra storage-

I know there's no handbag in this photo. However, you see the items layed next to the suitcase, well they could fit nicely into a handbag. Think of the small items you might pack. There's lots of dead space in a small handbag. Use this space for items like journals, pens, keys, medicine etc...

    4- Layout outfits-

Instead of packing options only pack what you need. If you are going for a week only pack 7 outfits. You can think of wearing items several times. Think of laying out items and seeing how well they would go with several other pieces. Such as a pair of denim shorts could be worn with different tops. Or one brown sandal to take you from beach to evening.
Laying the clothes out before packing makes you see exactly what you are taking. Otherwise you could end up packing items you never wear on the trip.

    5-stuff your pockets-

Invest in a coat with large pockets. Especially ones with pockets inside your coat to avoid pick pockets. You can store many items into them and not have to put them into a suitcase. Makes only taking a small suitcase onto the plain easier. Like if you are avoiding having to pay for large bag to be on the carousel part. . You can put maps, ipad, small water bottle (under size limit or empty to fill when you arrive), tickets, money etc... It's a way to take more things without filling your suitcase.

    6-Fill your shoes-

Fill the space in your shoes that your feet go in. Put underwear, socks and other small items into them. Otherwise it's just empty space being wasted. Also pack the larger items first like footwear. Best to pack around them rather than trying to add them on top of other items.

    7-Take only necessary toiletries-

Most hotels have some basic supplies like soap and shampoo. Only pack the bare minimum. Such as toothbrush, hair brush, suncream, small amount of makeup. Do not think you need to pack your whole beauty regime you do at home. Plus you can share with your family. e.g. all use same shampoo or suncream. Invest in the travel sized bottles to limit the liquid so it's in the requirements of the airline guide.

8-Use a smaller suitcase. One fit for carry on. -

A smaller bag prevents you feeling like you must fill the space of the bag up. It will guide you to only taking thinner and less bulky items. You can rinse out most clothes for next day use especially in hot climate. Plan for what activities you'l do on the trip. e..g. swimming, lots of walking sight seeing.
