She's so flighty-even though she's the bomb.com at growth-based magic, she's always been too easily distracted to ever properly take care of a plant on her own; ya girl has NO IDEA how she passed Potions; not really book-smart at all to be honest; just can't shut up (which, according to anyone you ask, is her worst trait); shallow and superficial, especially when it comes to her looks; super extra; erratic and inconsistent in her commitments; a messy bitch who lives for drama outside of her own friend group, but always tries to resolve any drama within her group (making her a HUGE hypocrite); not very practical when it comes to clothing choices (she's been known to wear miniskirts in 15 degree weather then hate herself for it, only to do the exact same thing the next day); kind of a shitty driver, despite the fact she can apply some bomb ass winged eyeliner while operating a motor vehicle; loves to gossip, and she's not great at keeping secrets, either; has the attention-span of a goldfish; frivolous and silly; tends to brush off or make excuses for her friends' toxic behavior; always seeking the approval of the people she surrounds herself with; hella clueless/oblivious (many jokes go straight over her head, tbh)

At a first glance, Lyra is so annoyingly extra and has way too much energy for her own good. She is bubbly and outgoing (some might say too outgoing), and her friendly, cheerful disposition is well-liked by her peers, even if they do make fun of her for her propensity of wearing high heels everywhere she goes. Though Lyra does come off as a bit shallow or superficial, she doesn't have a single mean bone in her body. She can talk about anything and everything for hours on end. Some tend to find this incessant chatter exceedingly irritating, which Lyra is not always the most aware of (read: she is completely unaware of). She is very optimistic and a kind and sweet person at heart, and she refuses to be cruel to other people as a general principle. Even when she gossips (and she is an incorrigible gossip), Lyra doesn't mean it in a malicious way. Of course, it probably doesn't come off that way to everyone else.

If Lyra is not always aware of how much she talks, she is aware of the feelings and thoughts of others. Lyra is naturally people-smart and is good at picking up subtle hints that indicate shifts in emotions in other people, though she's quite oblivious when it comes to most things (and really sucks at picking up on the severity of situations). She's a very good listener and always willing to offer comfort to other people. Empathetic, understanding, and nonjudgmental (well, on anything besides someone's taste in fashion, that is), Lyra is open and accepting, despite her infernal inability to keep her mouth shut on things that don't really matter.

Despite her rather silly tendencies, Lyra is a natural-born diplomat and compromiser, capable of expertly mediating tense situations without entirely realizing what she's doing. Armed with a firm belief in common courtesy and an ability to extend her compassion to anyone she meets, she is able to get even the most stubborn of people to agree to things through the application of hot drinks and sugary treats and pure politeness. She has a breezy, brisk way of going about her business, and she is remarkably good at keeping track of and managing people, for all her frivolous, sparkly ways. Finally, although Lyra comes off as super bubbly and optimistic, she is also plagued by her own insecurities-namely, the fact that she's only at the Institute because her mom and dad bought her way in. She's well-aware that she's probably very, well, average in terms of most of her magical abilities, and what she's good at-namely, talking to plants????-isn't anything that people regard as super useful. Sure, she's good at healing, but not good enough to become a healer. And she's alright at shapeshifting, but what the hell is she going to do with that, in the future?

But oh well. Lyra supposes that it'll work itself out. Besides, if she really wanted to, she could totally just jump straight into her family's business...though that's not a prospect she finds particularly appealing at the moment.

Lyra’s family, unlike many of those who send their daughters to the Mei-Li Institute of Arts and Sciences, is the very opposite of ‘old money’. The Anchetas only achieved fame and fortune 2-3 generations ago, when Lyra’s grandparents on her mother’s side built their own luxury resort empire from the ground up. Since then, the business has doubled in size, with locations all over East and Southeast Asia, though they have always been based in the Philippines (Manila, to be exact). The Anchetas were part of the burgeoning movement in the mid- and late-twentieth century to expand businesses/services run by sorcerers and sorceresses to non-magic users as well, and they are known for the fact that they’ll cater to all clients equally, magic or no magic.

When Lyra’s mother and father took charge of the business, they expanded it into the eco-tourism industry, buying up undeveloped land and creating tourist attractions revolving around the jungle and its life. Using magic, they created a way to leave the original ecosystems intact, even as they molded them into tourist attractions, and they have since then re-branded themselves as an environmentally-friendly luxury resort company. Online and in the media, the Anchetas are known for being super rich, super loud, and super eccentric. They’re a bit kitschy and gaudy at times, but it’s all in good fun.

Lyra is the youngest of six siblings, and honestly, there could probably be a reality TV show made about her family. As the youngest, Lyra has always been in the shadow cast by her older brothers and sisters. While her two oldest sisters were being groomed to take over the family business, her three brothers went on to become an award-winning author (popular in both magical and non-magical communities), a professional geomancer, and an acclaimed surgeon. Lyra, however, had never been particularly talented at anything. Sure, so she was above average in terms of plant-based magic, but that meant nothing when her brother could perform a magical open-heart surgery without a hitch, or when her sisters were already on the company advisory board at age twenty.

As a teenager, Lyra’s last name and money meant that she had plenty of social climbers clambering to be her friend, especially after they realized how trusting Lyra truly was. More than once, Lyra felt like she was being taken advantage of or pushed aside, but she always forgave any perceived slights the minute her so-called friends showed her even an ounce of kindness. Make no mistake about it, though; Lyra forgives, but she doesn’t forget. As she grew older, feelings of inadequacy continued to haunt her, even as Lyra repeatedly pushed them away in favor of just ‘enjoying the moment’.

When she started her first year at the Institute, Lyra was already preparing herself for four years of mediocre grades and struggling to pass classes that she didn’t feel qualified enough to even be in. However, Chae completely subverted her expectations. Chae didn’t care about what other people said about Lyra (when did she ever?), and she cared even less about the Ancheta family fortune. They met in an introductory earth-based magic class, and Lyra has considered Chae her best friend ever since the other sorceress stood up for her in front of the whole class.

As the two of them grew closer, Lyra began to understand that there was a lot more to Chae than Chae would ever let on, and when Chae told her about her plan to get out of her engagement over the summer, Lyra was worried sick…but not surprised (Chae always did come up with the most dangerous schemes, after all). Once she realized that there was no way Chae would change her mind, Lyra agreed to help her, and Lyra doesn’t think she’ll ever forget the feeling of being so fully trusted.

The last two years at the Institute have gone smoothly, and as Lyra enters her final year, there’s just one super important question-what is she going to do after she graduates?
