โ €โ €โ € โ €The raging screams that accompanied Ruth Lorenzo's entrance into this world could not have been more fitting. After all, the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter is always destined to bring chaos. The male equivalent is lucky; the seventh son of a seventh son fosters a life of healing and prosperity. He is something to cherish. But the universe has always loved to destroy its girls, from monthly curses to patriarchal misogyny. A seventh daughter of a seventh daughter โ” though still a mere human and nothing more โ” is another sick joke to add to female misery. Ruth's peace in life was over before it ever began.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Her mother, the first seventh daughter, moved to Hell's Point when she fell in love with a local. Miguel and Carmen Lorenzo. College sweethearts. Everyone fawned over their love story, and it was always left at that. No one had to know anything about that large, overwhelming family she was happy to leave behind. Her parents and sisters never believed in her when she said she wanted to be a writer; they loved to mock her dreams. But her husband always believed in and encouraged her. It was perfect to get a start in his small town's newspapers. While he worked hard as an elementary teacher, she devoted all her time to her articles and side-project novels. Of course, that was not enough on its own. For years, they tried to start a family. After the first two children, both girls, did not live past three months old, Carmen began to slip into a dark depression. She could hear her mother telling her that those daughters would have lived if she were good enough. She got more involved in church; her Bible studies and women's groups were the only thing that kept her going.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Carmen's sanity nearly frayed completely when four more baby girls came into this world...and quickly went back out. She stopped writing. The only thing that kept her alive was her husband and her dedication to the Lord. Somehow, leading her little groups turned into going to seminary school. She became an associate pastor and attended some kind of religious event every single day. Finally, the Lord took pity on her, or she proved herself worthy, or some other twisted dogmatic platitude. Little Ruthie, their seventh daughter, survived.

โ €โ €โ € โ €The senior pastor of the town's largest congregation passed away; Carmen rose to take his place. Weeks after her promotion, a baby boy was abandoned on the church's front steps. With a mischievous eighteen-month-old and deep fear of losing another of their own, the Lorenzos decided to adopt him. Nobody questioned it, and no one ever discussed those previous baby girls or Rafael's mysterious appearance, especially not to the two children themselves. Hell's Point is a town where everyone wants to know everyone's business, by all means, but the punishment that could come from gossiping about the most fearsome, fire-and-brimstone woman in town? Certainly not worth spreading such gossip around, even in the softest whispers. Carmen was known for quite the earth-shattering revenge. Crossing her was social suicide. It helped that Rafael looked just enough like his parents to pass as their own. With time, some even forgot that he wasn't theirs biologically.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Ruth grew up a feisty, devilish girl. She was certainly not the devout angel her parents had prayed for. By five years old, she refused to go by her given name, hating it so, and only answered to the shortened version, Roo. Raf had a habit of making everything worse for her. He was always better with words. Through tattling, lying, or some other trickery, he would get his older sister in trouble left and right, sometimes even for the sins he committed. It didn't help that their father worked at the elementary school and ostracized them from almost every potential friend. Or, at least, that was the case for Roo. Raf never kept someone around for long, since his back-stabbing tended to breed disloyalty; but he always had one or two running in a crew behind him.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Roo knew that she had a large extended family, but her mom's many relatives lived far, far away. Reunions were insanity; however, none of that changed how those cousins were mostly random names that didnโ€™t mean anything to her. She didnโ€™t even bother counting how many older siblings Carmen had. Within her hometown, few kids her age even looked at her twice, so Roo found ways to entertain herself. She was always tinkering, inventing, or researching something. Her passions became music, building robots, and dreaming of a world far, far away from Hell's Point. Those were the only things that kept her going through the dreary days of middle and high school.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Sure, at least at Clear Summit, she shed the annoying Roo moniker and went by her middle name Valentina. And her job at Spud's Tunes and Brews wasn't the worst way to spend her time. After all, she was always uncomfortable around the other Lorenzos and did anything to stay away from home as much as possible. (So what if she is still trying to find a way to secretly move out early, even now?) Running the coffee-record shop didn't take that much effort, leaving plenty of time in her shift to build her mechanics in the back room. Carmen stopped letting her do it at home after she almost cut off the mailman's hand with a letter-retrieving robot gone rogue. But things were still bleak and boring until Val finally found her chance to get away. A random poster pinned to her sophomore homeroom board advertised everything she had dreamed of: studying abroad for a semester in Peru.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Although it took months to convince her strict, conservative parents to ever let her go away to a foreign country for even half a year, they eventually caved to her incessant begging. It helped that she looked up a church and promised to go there every week, even though she had stopped buying into her mom's religious teachings since her twelfth birthday. Sure, it was a big lie, but that didn't matter. They were letting her go! What they didn't know wouldn't hurt them.

โ €โ €โ € โ €When the time came around for Val to actually leave, it was not the clean break she was looking for. In her first semester of junior year, she found two things that she previously would have never expected: a real friend and a boyfriend. Well, sort of a boyfriend. Leo might be married and the High Priest of the Wiccan Coven at Hell's Point. But isn't that a minor technicality? Her bestie, also confusingly nicknamed Val, moved during the summer. They met at school in the fall, and she is not a fan of the whole mistress thing that the other Val has going on. Despite that, Valentina still has a lot of newfound confidence with these two relationships finally getting her out of her shell. She started to go by Vallo, to differentiate herself from the new student, and the fun new nickname added to her sense of belonging. It was the first name that felt like her.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Unfortunately, growing up for a seventh daughter of a seventh daughter does not bring sunshine or rainbows or anything like that. Vallo is far from being sugar, spice, and everything nice. Though her humanity is still absolutely true, her โ€œpotentialโ€ has become a point of contention. Leo knows the truth of her birth, and he wants to use it for his advantage. She wasn't quite ready to "give it all away" before leaving for Peru. But having gotten a little too close a little too many times, she did trigger some of the more...interesting parts of her little chaotic nature. She has been plagued by haunting nightmares of creatures beyond her understanding for months. While it makes her quite the insomniac, the more dire consequence went undetected until she found her way down to Peru. All those supernatural creatures...they're absolutely real, and Vallo's seventh-of-seventh, virginal blood smells extra delicious.

โ €โ €โ € โ €So what happened to her down in South America? Or did something happen with the Lorenzos that forced her return? Some of the students at Clear Summit did not notice when she left. Yet when she returned now two months early โ” jaded and mysterious and nothing like the Vallo that left them โ” the rumors started to fly. She wasn't some basic Uggs-and-Starbucks white girl who went abroad to find herself. But undeniably, something in her facade had drastically shifted. Vallo is keeping her lips absolutely sealed, except that giant scar down her thigh might be more of a clue than anyone realizes.

โ €โ €โ € โ €All kinds of monsters came hunting for Vallo when she was in Peru, and her American-accented Spanish did little to explain herself to them. She didn't understand the dark and haunted words they were saying to her; they don't exactly cover evil-incantation vocab in class. Her last resolve broke when a werewolf attacked her. She called her parents bawling. Though luckily, it didn't bite her, it did leave a nasty scratch along her leg that required stitches. Vallo still isn't sure why it didn't kill her outright, but her host mother said it was the amulet โ” a pretty parting gift from Leo โ” that kept her safe. She was Marked as His, her host mother said. Vallo rather liked the sound of it in the moment, but now that she is back in Hell's Point, she isn't so sure she wants to belong to anyone but herself.

โ €โ €โ € โ €Her parents are more protective than ever, feeling like "that abroad thing" was an independence experiment gone awry. And, of course, her dumb brother won't shut up and leave her alone. He loves to watch her fail. She can't even explain herself to Valerie; how do you describe that something from a damn Twilight novel might be real? And Leo is getting a little...too insistent lately. Not even about sex. But about a whole lot of other dark things that make Vallo feel even more helpless than being cornered by a werewolf. She wants things to go back to normal, back to the days where she could invent silly things in the back of Spud's Tunes and Brews without consequence. Yet the mysteries of Hell's Point are a little bit more intriguing than they should be. She can't seem to tear herself away, as if something inside her has to know all of the answers. Perhaps ignorance is bliss, but the truth may very well set Vallo free. Isn't that all she's ever wanted?
