Amazing memory (not photographic, but still really, really good); did well in her math and CS classes; generally just good at academics-she has a mind well-suited for learning new things, even if she doesn't particularly like the specific subject; reliable; studious; diligent; persistent; consistent; very analytical and rational; meticulous and thorough; will always follow through with you; sympathetic; compassionate; very book-smart; patient; her steadfast perseverance; logical, rational, and analytical; very detail-oriented; understands herself pretty well; definitely has a knack for math; not too shabby of a programmer, either; can run through mental math like nobody's business; shows a lot of potential with the more technical aspects of magic; inadvertently discovered a way to combine spells with technology (which is apparently revolutionary, though Jessie has no idea what the fuck is going on); speaks Mandarin Chinese (I mean it isn't great but she's also been in weekend Chinese school classes since like, 3rd grade so it isn't the worst it could be, either); knows a wide variety of programming languages (Java, Haskell, C++, Objective CAML, Python, JavaScript, C#, Ruby, etc) โฝ ๐พ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฒ๐ต๐ฌ๐บ๐บ๐ฌ๐บ
So like, what is being socially competent again????; tends to play by the rules and is not great at spur-of-the-moment decisions; not very vocal about her opinions but sticks to them no matter what, which tends to put her in awkward situations when she does the exact opposite of what people expect her to do; literally this whole magic stuff is super new to her, so she has no idea what is going on like ever; she may be quite book-smart but is definitely not people-smart; can kind of come off as painfully shy or awkward at first; probably won't speak up when something's bothering her; isn't exactly known for taking initiative or spear-heading stuff-she's definitely more of a behind-the-scenes kind of girl; not very good at relationship advice; in fact, she's not very good at dealing with relationships in general; not usually the most creative of people; spends way too much time watching dumb K-dramas; has not one musical bone in her body; has a really hard time connecting with the more spiritual aspects of magic; a bit of a pushover; kind of passive โฝ ๐ช๐ณ๐จ๐บ๐บ ๐บ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฌ๐ซ๐ผ๐ณ๐ฌ

Jessie is definitely a go-with-the-flow kind of person-at least, for the most part. She's mellow and calm, and keeps a cool head under stressful situations; she's never been one to panic about things. Jessie is always up for chatting with others, but she tends to keep to herself when she is around people that she is unfamiliar with. She is definitely not easily provoked, and Jessie really doesn't like getting into fights or arguments, nor does she like starting them in the first place. She doesn't like sticking her nose into other people's business, and she's almost never involved in any drama whatsoever between her classmates. However, once she sets her mind to something, her stance on it won't budge one bit, even if she's willing to compromise with others to accommodate their needs. Patient and diligent, Jessie firmly believes that good things will come to those who wait. She is a very results-oriented person, and she won't give up on something until she sees it all the way through. This has definitely helped her, academics-wise; even if she's not a natural genius at anything, she has the patience, determination, and meticulousness to learn things slowly but surely. She also has a logical, analytical way of thinking that helps with her chosen field of specialization. Jessie is definitely not the life of the party. She's rather reserved, and usually keeps to herself. Jessie is far from 'outgoing' or 'sociable', and is only a whisker away from being painfully or awkwardly shy. However, she's usually quite pleasant and agreeable if someone else initiates the conversation, and once she does become friends with someone, she's definitely a very good listener and a shoulder to cry on, even if she's pretty shit at giving good relationship advice. Jessie also tends to be very loyal to her friends; even if she isn't very good at speaking up for herself, she's always found it a lot easier to be speaking up on the behalf of others. โโโโโโโ โ โขโ โฐโโโฝเผโพโโโฑโ โขโ โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ

For the most part, Jessie's life has been painstakingly...normal. She was born and raised in Baltimore, the daughter of two Chinese immigrants, and her childhood was just homework and school and piano (she quit in middle school-thank god. She was atrocious). Jessie was never really somebody to attract a whole lot of attention to herself, and she did fairly well in high school, deciding to attend UMBC for her undergrad in her senior year. At UMBC, Jessie wanted to study environmental science and ecology and become someone who worked for an environmental non-profit, but at her parents' insistence, she studied computer science instead. College was also...pretty normal, for the most part. Jessie did well in her classes-her analytical mind was well-suited to figuring out what to make out of particularly wacky code, and her attention to detail made the debugging process easier-and she was the 6th in her class when she graduated. And every time she thought about becoming a climate activist or something, she forced herself to do homework or listen to music until she forgot about it. It hurt too much to think about what she couldn't have. It was the end of May, the summer she graduated, when Sumei Liu barged into her apartment and basically told her that 1) magic was real, and 2) Jessie had magic. At first, Jessie thought it was all just an elaborate prank, until the headmistress of the Mei-Li Institute got impatient and straight-up made herb levitate. "I don't get it," Jessie had told her, bewildered beyond belief. "How do you know that I have...magic? I certainly can't do that," she'd protested, gesturing at the floating beds. "Don't be ridiculous. Of course you can. It's a simple levitation spell; one of the basics. What you were doing this past year, though, certainly was not. How ever did you figure it out?" "Do what?" asked Jessie, who had no idea what the hell was going on. What is this crazy lady going on about? she'd wondered to herself, incredulous and disbelieving. Impatience flashed across Sumei's features. "Write magical spells into your code, that's what." Naturally, Jessie didn't know what Sumei was referring to, yet again. It would become a common theme in the interactions between the two. The conversation that followed was quite....awkward, to say the least. Sumei wanted Jessie to drop everything she was doing, pack her bags, and enroll in the Institute immediately. But Jessie told the headmistress that she was going to finish her degree, even if it killed her, and that this so-called magic of hers had waited twenty-two years. It could wait another few months. So they reached an agreement-Jessie would finish her undergrad degree, then enroll in the Institute in the coming fall with a full scholarship (and Sumei would be the one taking care of the awkward email that she would have to send to the company she'd signed on to for after graduation). And although Jessie was still skeptical about the entire existence of a widespread society of magic folk (which, according to Sumei, did indeed exist), she showed up in Singapore on the appointed date, and 3 days later they tried to get her to use spells to navigate a rock across a river????? Which didn't exactly, uh, work, considering the fact that Jessie had no prior knowledge of magic hocus-pocus stuff beforehand, but the professor who was in charge of her water divination session decided to put her in House Mei, thanks to her tireless perseverance in trying to learn the spells. Unsurprisingly, when classes started, Jessie had a ton of catching up to do. She's been learning rather quickly, though she's still behind everyone else. Outside of the classroom, the news that Jessie had only found out about her magic in May quickly went down the grapevine, along with the fact that she'd created a magical computer program or something. Thanks to that stupid WeChat gossip page, Jessie has all the kids from the mainland hounding her for a magical VPN that will get around any Internet censorship method that the Chinese government tries to use. It's definitely kind of annoying. In any case, Jessie is still adjusting to the whole magical sorceress girl lifestyle, but so far it's been aight. Her classes, though challenging, are quite interesting-and the food is so much better than the food at the UMBC. โโโโโโโ โ โขโ โฐโโโฝเผโพโโโฑโ โขโ โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
