How do you choose artwork for a minimalist interior?

  • I have always liked minimalist interiors because they make a room feel calm and uncluttered, but recently I realised that my living room might actually be a little too plain. The furniture is simple, the walls are mostly empty and there are not many decorative elements. I would like to add one or two paintings without losing the clean look. My main difficulty is deciding whether the artwork should blend into the room or deliberately create some contrast. I have seen examples of both approaches and cannot quite decide which one works better.

  • hink either approach can work depending on the room and your personal taste. I would start by browsing different styles at https://artpetroff.com/ and saving a few works that immediately catch your attention. Then I would look at them alongside photographs of the room rather than judging them individually. It can be surprisingly helpful to see whether the colours and proportions feel balanced. I would also check the actual dimensions before making a decision, since the scale of a painting can change the whole impression. Personally, I would rather choose one piece that I genuinely enjoy than add several smaller works simply because the wall looks empty.

  • Thanks, comparing the artwork with the actual room and paying attention to scale sounds like a much better way to approach it.
