How important is it to rent a ski jacket at the resort?

  • I’m heading to the mountains for the first time and have a question about gear. How practical and cost-effective is it to rent a ski jacket at the resort? Would it be better to splurge and buy my own before the trip, even though I'll only be skiing for a few days?

  • I don't want to buy an expensive jacket with a membrane that'll end up sitting in my closet for years. But bringing a down jacket from the city is a bad idea—I've heard that you'll get soaked by the snow right away. Are there decent selections of clothing at rental shops so you can find the right size? Or do they usually just offer old, worn-out rags with no style and no decent membrane? Has anyone rented a jacket before? Please let me know how you handled this at the resort.

  • I skimped on buying a brand-name jacket on my first trip. And decided to ski in a regular winter jacket instead. It was a disaster. After a couple of falls, I was completely soaked, and the wind cut right through the fabric on the lift. Next time, I ordered my gear in advance through https://getski.com/ . On their website, I immediately picked a partner shop that sells technical clothing in addition to skis. When you book, though, make sure to get a jacket one size larger than your usual street clothes. You'll definitely need to wear thermal underwear underneath it. Which resort are you going to? I was only at Passo Stelvio this summer.
