Why Private Profiles Make People Curious

A friend of mine recently mentioned that they wanted to view private instagram profiles just to understand who someone was before replying to a message, at first it sounded like normal curiosity, because almost everyone checks social media before trusting a new person online, but then I started thinking about how private accounts exist for a reason, even if the reason is simple or personal, It can feel tempting to look for shortcuts, especially when a profile has no public posts, but that also creates a strange privacy question, I personally feel like sending a follow request is the cleanest option, because at least the other person gets to choose, do you think people overthink this, or is respecting a private profile always the better move?

My cousin once sent me a profile screenshot and asked if I knew the person, which led me into that awkward moment of wanting to check more than I probably should, I started reading around and saw people talking about ways to view private instagram profiles, but the more I thought about it, the more it felt wrong to push past someone’s settings, I ended up telling him the simplest route is still sending a normal follow request and respecting whatever answer comes after.
