Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Home Care Provider

  • We’re lining up interviews with a few home care agencies. Beyond licenses and references, what questions actually reveal how they operate day to day? I want to avoid surprises after we start.

  • Great to go in prepared. Ask about minimum shifts, how they handle last‑minute call‑outs, and whether you’ll get the same caregiver consistently. Clarify medication reminders vs. administration, transportation policies, and how they communicate after each visit. We also asked for a sample care plan and what the first 30 days look like—supervisor visit, goal setting, and check‑ins. This guide was our playbook and made the conversations much more productive: this was really helpful for our family when we had to choose. We left each interview with notes we could compare side by side.

  • Small tip: bring a one‑page summary of the person’s routine—sleep, meds, mobility, food likes. It speeds up planning and shows how attentive the agency is to details.
