All The References of the Costumes Star Beam Wore in "Flaming Heart" MV

  • Hello everyone 👋

As you all know, I post often here in blog posts because I would love to share with you some of my creative process in creating looks for Star Beam. In their recent MV, "Flaming Heart", the members wore different costumes that represented different women of pop culture.

    RYUNA

Our redhead unnie, Ryuna, dressed up as Cherry Blossom of Riverdale but since my K-poppie/ NCTzen ass loves to make a pun on her name. Sound familiar? It's NCT 127's "Cherry Bomb" (my legs hurt everytime that song played in the Random Play Dance games). I go for Cheryl's general color palette of red & black then I used Johnny's teaser photo (circa Cherry Bomb era) as the base. I used the red camouflage skirt to reference 127 squad's infamous print in "Cherry Bomb" era outfits and their album art in "Firetruck". Also, let's not forget her spider brooch.

    CHAEHEE

Usually, we see Chaehee in pants on and offstage but this time, she wore an LBD inspired by the "Love Witch" herself, Elaine. In case you don't know, "Love Witch" inspired "Love Is Over"'s premise. Elaine is desperately finds love but she backfired. Chaehee looks gorgeous in her 60s siren getup, isn't it?

    CHLOE

Chloe dressed up as Madonna (80s era in the film, Desperately Seeking Susan). I know some of the pieces weren't historically accurate (I'm Sorry Mom and Dad) but I include the bustier, bows, gloves and crucifix earrings which screamed the 80s for me when being paired together

    HYOSHIN

Another slightly historically inaccurate look (yep, I'm doing it on purpose so they can move comfortably) but at least I go for the drop waist hem. Hyoshin showed up as Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby. I chose the lavender dress because it's Star Beam's one of the fandom colors (other is periwinkle)

    JEONAH

I tried to do a more subtle Cleopatra look for Jeonah (which is also appeared on 1996 film, Romeo + Juliet where the MV is inspired by). Yes, it may look like a dress for the class presentation (LOL I know) but again, for the sake of comfort and mobility. For the K-pop lens, I refer to Seulgi's SM Town Halloween look back in 2017. Instead of being culturally offending others, I rather have Jeonah's hair being straightened and put a gold headband on her head.

Honestly, for makeup, It was a toned down look instead of an all-out Halloween look inspired by the 1960s ad of Revlon promoting the movie, Cleopatra (played by Elizabeth Taylor). There is also a makeup tutorial on this toned down take of this iconic historical figure.

    SAEYOON

Aside from Ryuna, Saeyoon also portrayed a 2010s heroine in the person of the Goblin's Bride herself, Ji Eun Tak. We can't think of Euntak without her iconic red scarf right? So for her outfit, it's so easy to replicate since it's just neutral basics (in fall/winter layers) so that the scarf will shine through. Bonus points that Sae rocks her long bob

    YUJIA

Since she was picked as Juliet in the MV, she looks ethereal in her angel costume which enhances her natural beauty more. Her headband referenced Tzuyu in "What is Love?" MV
