the Belle
Full Name: Diantha Lynsey Chandler
Nickname(s): Di, Diana
Age: 17
Date of Birth: January 6th
Faceclaim: Florence PughRole at Country Club: cashier at the golf shop
Long Term Goals/Dreams:
To go to a good college
To travel (okay it’s more just wanting to get away from Westerly and her existence there. It’s not a life)
Father: Lincoln Franklin Chandler (Harry Van Gorkum)
Mother: Elisabeth Allana Chandler (deceased, Hattie Morahan)
Pet(s): Sophia (the family cat)
Personality:
For everything she’s gone through, Diantha has remained an empathetic soul, compassionate, gentle and one might even say a bit selfless. She generally is more apt to help others than she is to follow the selfish route. Although, she’s also rather assertive, headstrong, stubborn, and can display a surprising level of wit when piqued, even though otherwise she can be seen as rather polite. Especially when she perceives the target of her wit to have been being rude and/or unfair to herself or others. She absolutely loves books and reading, which has made her quite intelligent, logical, and curious about what goes on around her even as it has also created a bit of drama at the golf shop on occasion. (She figures there’s nothing wrong with occupying her time with a book when things are slow. Others disagree.) This has also led to her having a bit of an adventurous streak. She longs for an escape from the mundanity of her world, in a nutshell.Likes: reading, going on long walks outside, a hot cup of peppermint tea on a rainy day, getting good grades, learning new things, music boxes, flowers (especially roses and sunflowers), delicate jewelry, singing, freedom, horseback riding, astrology
Dislikes: chauvinists, Antoine, bullies, feeling misunderstood, illogical rules, politics, gossip, girls who act like there isn’t an intelligent bone in their body, senseless violence, enclosed spaces
Skills and/or Hobbies:
Strengths: Diantha is very well-versed in holding her own in a conversation, and due to her intelligence it has often been said she’d do well as a public speaker or even in politics. However, she’s also very empathetic, which she uses as her argument against the politics idea. She’s also quite aware of her own self, confident in her ability to make the best choices for herself and frequently trying to get others to believe in their own goodness and capability to make good decisions.
Weaknesses: Above all, Diantha has a psychological block against agreeing to others’ orders. She simply would rather be allowed to make her own decisions, not have others make them for her. Except, given her active imagination, sometimes her ideas go a bit crazy as far as others would like, making them wonder if she’s destined to follow her father’s path and become an eccentric. Instead, she’d rather just be treated as an equal, not lesser than anyone else even if they don’t agree with her.
Fears: Most of all, Diantha fears being trapped in a loveless relationship. She refuses to fit the mold of the perfect girlfriend, as she sees it as having to deny her true identity. That and she's also got a slight case of claustrophobia.
Hobbies: Reading, horseback riding, keeping up with her bookstagram (because yes, she’s the type of girl to devote her social media presence mostly to whatever she’s reading), anything but golf
Biography:
Lincoln and Elisabeth Chandler were the couple no one ever thought would actually work. They met in university, the boy who nobody thought would ever get a girlfriend due to his eccentricities and the French girl most guys wanted. Yet, Elisabeth found herself drawn to Lincoln, who enjoyed carving little gifts for her. It was what had given him his reputation, being more used to creating his little projects rather than being like the other guys at the university. Most guys at all, honestly, yet it won him Elisabeth and he was utterly devoted to her through graduation and afterward. Elisabeth got a job teaching European literature in Boston, and of course he followed, starting a little shop where he could sell his carvings and whatever else piqued his interest.
Diantha was born several years later, and the little family flourished as much as a semi-middle-class family could. Her parents doted on little Di, giving her whatever she liked and allowing her to make her own decisions from an early age. If she wanted to stay up late, she could. If she wanted to go out in the gardens on her own for a while, she could. If she wanted to read books well above her suggested reading level, Elisabeth wasn’t going to stop her. Instead, she was encouraged, and things went along rather in the same vein until Di turned five. Which was when her little world fell to pieces, as Elisabeth Chandler was diagnosed with stage four cancer and no matter how much treatment she received, she was deceased by Di’s next birthday.
Life insurance helped keep things afloat for a while, even as Lincoln fell into despair and his shop found itself shuttered before long. One advantage the grieving family had, however, was a connection of Elisabeth’s, who offered to take the father and daughter in until they could get back on their feet. It meant moving to Rhode Island, but at least the change in scenery seemed to help slightly. Di had managed to sneak some of her particularly favorite books from home along with a carved wooden rose that had been her mother’s into her luggage, even though at six years old he hardly understood the nuances of Dickens and the other writers her mother had introduced her to. They became beloved artifacts, even as the history behind them faded into memories. Even as her mother faded into memories for her, whereas Elisabeth remained at the forefront of Lincoln’s mind.
After a few years, he pulled himself out of his depression enough to get a job in town and a small apartment above the shop for him and Di, giving her a kitten to hopefully distract her from his moments of weakness. Which didn’t work even as she found herself nearly as devoted to Sophia as she was her father. She was enrolled in school after having been homeschooled for much of her prior life. Things weren’t perfect at all, but she managed to deal with whatever was thrown at her without seeming too bothered by it. There might have been some complaints to her father at home, statements that she didn’t feel like she fit in amongst the other kids, but outside of the apartment she didn’t show that at all. Outside of the apartment, she was the strong one. Outside of the apartment, she made her own decisions again. Getting a job at the golf shop was step one, even though she doesn’t like golf one bit. That just meant she’d go back to smuggling books around for the downtime.Comments (1) -
