Her mother Rose always said she was born independent: in need of no one. Rose popped her out with ease and then took a nap. Father was, of course, away. They didn’t have a name for her. The nurses suggested 𝒦 𝒶 𝓁 𝒶, after a retired beloved obstetrician, and it stuck. As a child, Kala voiced no issue with being shipped back and forth from Honolulu and her parents’ hometown, Glenville. Kala lived on the island with her father’s Swedish parents; they homeschooled her for second through fourth grade, and again for seventh and eighth. Back in Glenville, she grew up with Rose’s new family: a brother three years younger named Andy and a cool older step-sister named Jolie. It was difficult for Kala to keep friends in either city. Everywhere she went, she was known as the quiet reader, the girl who often disappeared, the artist: picking up any new creative habit to do away with ill feelings. It wasn’t until she turned 14 that she finally spoke up about wanting to stay in one place. It came at a cost, which meant only seeing her father during the holidays. It’s been four years of high school and Kala feels she has yet to adjust to Glenville. Everyone here has had the same friend group since elementary school and she's not one to interrupt. She prefers keeping to herself and the one time she did otherwise—last year—she re-discovered a darker part of herself that she’d rather forget.

Until Kala befriends a group of girls who will change her life the year before graduation, you can find her alone, under the big tree in the center of town, reading about or sketching someplace else.

⇢ 𝒻𝒾𝓇𝓈𝓉 𝒾𝓂𝓅𝓇𝑒𝓈𝓈𝒾𝑜𝓃: you either assume she’s weird or shy or pretentious and judgy. she usually comes off cold, but upon talking to her, you quickly warm up to her; she’s bubbly to those she knows well and enjoys getting to know people

⇢ 𝓉𝓇𝒶𝒾𝓉𝓈: quiet. thoughtful. artistic. articulate. opinionated. loyal. helpful. passionate. {awkwardly} funny. spiritual. emotional.

⇢ 𝒻𝓁𝒶𝓌𝓈: reserved. passive. socially unengaged. too sensitive and thus elusive. can be ironically hypocritical. dreamy to the point of oblivion. indecisive. typically pessimistic, but she’s learned therapeutic resolutions to this way of thinking; she’s still trying to make them her “norm.”

⇢ 𝓅𝑒𝓉 𝓅𝑒𝑒𝓋𝑒𝓈: school traditions and the system. bureaucracy. impulsivity. uncultured or otherwise ignorant people. messy surroundings. when people compare her to her mom. when people compare her work to ___ 's work. gossips.

⇢ 𝓌𝑜𝓇𝓈𝓉 𝒽𝒶𝒷𝒾𝓉𝓈: bites her nails and locks her jaw when nervous. bulimic, trying her best not to be with the help of therapy {again}. easily peer-pressured. very forgetful, especially when it comes to locking doors, lockers, her bike. always assuming the worst. chooses to avoid confrontation w/ anyone and anything. not speaking her mind at the right moment and then regretting it. if she gets upset, she gets 𝓋𝑒𝓇𝓎 upset with an off-putting power like she’s been trying to tell you off for years...

⇢ 𝒶𝓈𝓅𝒾𝓇𝒶𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃𝓈: wants to apply to culinary school or study to be a librarian, but she assumes she’s not confident enough to do either. so she’s trying to not think about it at the moment. deep down, she knows she wants to be a freelance artist and she already has the attention and talent. but she wants to do everything she can to not be {more} like her mom. other than that, she's trying to graduate, put a me

she would also 𝓁𝑜𝓋𝑒 to break out of her shell, and make friends, and have a good time in her last year of high school, instead of just hanging out with her siblings and dog all day. that's her biggest goal at the moment. it seems impossible to her. she recently completed years-long therapy and treatment for bulimia, which she had since she was in the 5th grade. she aims to not go back there again.

⇢ 𝓈𝒸𝒽𝑜𝑜𝓁 𝓎𝑒𝒶𝓇, 𝑔𝓇𝒶𝒹𝑒𝓈: about to be a senior. she took freshman year twice (once homeschooled) since she moved back from Hawai'i late that year, which is why she’s older than her classmates. she’s a solid B student who avoids higher math or science classes to keep from an average GPA because that shit doesn’t stick. she used an old doctor’s note to opt out of gym class (mild scoliosis).

⇢ 𝒸𝑜𝓊𝓇𝓈𝑒 𝓈𝑒𝓁𝑒𝒸𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃: AP European History, College Math, Marine Biology, AP Literature, Studio Art, Culinary, and AP Art History elective

⇢ 𝑒𝓍𝓉𝓇𝒶 𝒸𝓊𝓇𝓇𝒾𝒸𝓊𝓁𝒶𝓇𝓈: creates illustrations for the school yearbook and newsmagazine. their meetings are the only school activity Kala attends. other than that, she does a lot of volunteer work at/with the local church; her stepdad is the youth group director there and it’s how her family knows Ruby’s. together, they attend the Christian youth group, Revival. Ruby just got bored bugging Kala, who was uninterested in keeping up with her active social life. they only really talk at church now.
