Spring/Summer 2019 Street Style Trends

  • Runway seasons are always a great time for fans of fashion. Of course there’s new collections from our favorite designers, but some of the most exciting fashion takes place off the runway. All kinds of celebrities and fashion insiders use the crowded sidewalks outside presentation venues to show off their best looks. Street style is not only a great source of inspiration for our own wardrobes, but a helpful tool to predict what trends we can expect to see when the following season rolls around. Read on for a breakdown of some of the biggest trends we’ve spotted so far!

—PUFFER COATS; Statement coats have been on trend for several seasons now, but this year gave puffers their chance to shine. Gone are the days of slightly different iterations of the same puffy, down jacket. These puffers come in all kinds of new cuts and patterns. Some are tighter, with quilting that helps hug the body and show off the figure, while others cascade to the shins like an elegant gown. Then there are those that feature embellishments, like metal studs, bows, and lace. There’s a puffer for every style or occasion! Following the recent resurgence of nineties inspiration on the runway, crombie coats are also gaining popularity.

—GOING SLEEVELESS; Despite being the first place to spot Spring/Summer collections in action, the weather this time of the year is typically too brisk for anything less than a blazer. And just because a garment doesn't have sleeves doesn't mean it can't keep you warm. Along with the coats mentioned above, a different silhouette has also been getting a lot of wear recently. Capes, shawls, and ponchos are a creative way to add interest and elegance to any look. Even sweaters have been showing up with open or draped sleeves that mimic the fit of these garments.

—BELTED OUTERWEAR; Whether it’s a puffer, or a crombie, or something entirely different, there’s one thing most street style mavens have in common; a belt over top of it. And not just any kind of belt, either. The belts in style this season are wide, with a square or rectangular buckle. Some are long enough to reach the wearer’s knees. These belts were usually worn at the waist or above, to give the kind of exaggerated hourglass silhouette that was popular in the eighties.

—CROSS-BODY BAGS; Another popular recent trend has been fanny packs. Many were styled, not around the waist as they were meant to be worn, but across the chest. This season, fanny packs aren’t the only bags being styled this way. All kinds of purses with short straps are being worn cross-body. Some were even designed to be worn this way, likely in response to the increased interest in fanny packs.

—PRINTS; Defying the famous quote from The Devil Wears Prada, florals aren’t very apparent this season. However, we are seeing other kinds of prints. Plaid is especially popular on pants, whereas python has been making appearances on boots. Last season’s tie dye trend shows no signs of slowing down, both on the runway and off. There’s also a lot of mixing different kinds of prints in the same look. All-in-one dressing is a trend that doesn’t seem to be leaving any time soon, but it was previously popular for monochromatic looks. This season, it’s all about committing to a type of print - like head-to-toe tie dye.

Which trends have you spotted this fashion season? Are they're any you can't wait to try?
